The museum is locked, but all you have to do is press the button at the door during normal business hours and someone will come down and let you in. The museum has old memorabilia such as ladders, water bombs, toys, helmets, radios pictures and decorative hydrants. They also have an old pole that was removed from one of their fire houses. It is not operational, but still cool to see. The woman working there during my visit was very nice and helpful. She answered any question that I had. It is free to visit and for me, it broke up visiting the same old stuff. There is merchandise such as t-shirts, hats, and patches that you can purchase there. There is no apparatus on display, but I was told that if they were not bust that I may be able to see the apparatus in the real firehouse behind the museum. This is not a big time consumer, but is neat to see and could be coupled with visits to the firefighters memorial, the Alaska Law Enforcement Museum, and other nearby attractions

Books, audio books, magazines, movies and a plethora of digital items to check out online as well. There is plenty of space, tables and even private rooms for study. The staff is polite and helpful to boot! One thing to make note of is you need to contact them first about donating items. They don't just take things on a whim, and definitely not a place to just dump your boom supply.

If you've spent any time at all in North Anchorage "tropical paradise" is certainly not the first…read moreterm that comes to mind. This is truly a hidden gem inside Russian Jack Springs Park. You enter through the solarium, a little tropical oasis with two goldfish/koi ponds, an incredible display of tropical plants and trees, and a large birdcage with a tree in it. We enjoyed simply sitting on the bench here and taking it all in. Next is the main greenhouse. There is quite a collection in there, some of the plants and trees have clearly been there a very long time, there are cacti that practically touch the ceiling, trees spreading out overhead, and all manner of other tropical plants that you won't find anywhere outside within a thousand miles of here. And there are starts and seedlings as well, indicating this will continue to be the lovely hidden oasis it is for years to come. I've been to bigger and more grandiose tropical greenhouses, but to have this at all in Alaska is quite an accomplishment. And it's free. A great way to spend an hour or so.

But most everything is is woefully lacking. The materials are very out of date... stuff dating back to before the 70s that isn't valid anymore. So I don't know how students can be expected to use it. There are lots of tables and seating all over the place! The second floor has a quite area on the east side for those looking to get away from the noise. There always seems to be computers available and there are a few printing stations and copy rooms available. Good luck finding parking if you come any time Mon-Thu during the day time classes. The thing I hate about the library is that the entrance is no where near the parking lot. You can be on the east side of the building and see your car and have to walk forever just to get to it. There were four people ahead of me in line and I was still helped and out the door in less than ten mins. I guarantee if I went to the DMV at 4pm (not sure how late the DMV is even open until) on the last day of the month I would've waited hours. The staff was so friendly and helpful and even apologized for the wait (what wait??). I paid a bit more for convenience but it is WELL worth it considering I still had a ton of errands to do after.

Eagle River has a few festivals throughout the year that are worth seeing. Bear Paw Festival is Eagle River's yearly fair held in July. It consists of a parade, fair type booths and many activities for the whole family. Each year the Bear Paw has a different theme. Last year it was Pirates, this year it is a Circus theme. Some of the events include a slippery salmon toss, outhouse races and a salmon cook-off. Eagle River Scottish Highland Games is held at the Lion's park every June. If you like the sound of bagpipes and watching large men throwing even larger objects about, this event is for you.
