In the years since covid, the FCAC has not only survived, but they have thrived! Thanks in large part to a generous and supportive community of members and students, luck with grants, and a dedicated staff, they have weathered two leadership changes, have innovated with online course offerings and collaborations, and have upgraded the facility's security and air exchange systems to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all students, teachers, members, staff and community attendees. I was sent to Intro to Adobe Illustrator by my work, and had the best experience. There was a ton of content crammed into our semester, and I now confidently create advertisements, eblasts, and social media content for my organization in Illustrator exclusively. Working in Illustrator can often be frustrating, but Jeremy (the instructor) answered my questions with grace, patience, and a sense of humor. A gift certificate to this center makes for a great gift! There is a wide variety of class offerings, and many opportunities to push yourself or someone you love out of their comfort zone. Nonprofit art centers like Flower City are the backbone of ROC, and make it the cultural beacon that it is. I hope to someday become a member and make use of this facility on a more regular basis.

Everyone is also very nice and welcoming. I absolutely love photography so I love seeing the old pictures and the cameras that took them. It's so cool to see the evolution of the camera. They also have a few movie cameras too. They also had a whole wall displaying the colors used when Technicolor was first introduced. I also like seeing how much better pictures got over time too. When we visited recently, there was a wonderful exhibit that I absolutely loved. It combined my love of flowers, horticulture and photography. It was so cool that this man grew these beautiful tall flowers across a large portion of his property and photographed it all. He also created some other beautiful pieces. I especially loved three large panels. While touring the house, you see many fascinating items from Eastman's life. It's a beautiful home. You can just imagine the parties he must have hosted there. I would love to have attended a party that he had in his dining room. He had some beautiful things. the foyer where you go to the other rooms or upstairs. He had some interesting artifacts too like his pipe organ that had around 6k pipes. I bet it sounded amazing because there were also buttons that made it sound like a whole orchestra. The gardens there are absolutely beautiful when not under construction. They have so many wonderful varieties of flowers and other plants. I can't wait to go back and see it after the construction is done. There was also a beautiful picture of Macchu Picchu outside. If you love photography, you must visit. They have a nice gift shop too.

If you're one of the world's richest men, how do you design your home? It turns out, George Eastman, best known for earning camera patents and running a multi-million dollar international firm, had a wild and wacky side. Who else would install not just a cathedral-style Wurlitzer near the central stairwell, but hire an organist to play it every morning at 08:00 as an alarm clock? He once took an African safari and decorated his home liberally with the mementos: An elephant's head is in place of pride in the atrium. Eastman's mother lived to an advanced age, and had her own wing in the house. For me, this was some of the most interesting and personal parts of the house. Her bedroom window had the best view of the formal gardens below. The nurse's quarters were adjacent to hers. The state of the art wheelchair was on display, and looking into the medicine cabinet (behind glass) were the medicine bottles she used. Raise your hand if you're surprised morphine was there? Except for the china pattern, the piano, and the furniture, Mrs. Eastman is almost invisible. Perhaps that was her preference. In summer the gardens are open to the public. There's a gallery/ photography museum next to the house on the first floor; the price of admission is covered in the same visit fee. Seniors, students, children have discounted ticket prices.

If you aren't looking for clay, you'll find jewelry items and knick knacks as well! Everything is reasonably priced. And great strong quality. If you make a purchase, try to find things around the store marked free! They have different things each day. Many of them are just small trinkets but they're cute as can be! My last few trips fell during their seconds sale. Basically, starting the second Saturday of the second month (Feb), a ton of local products are on sale for more than 50% off. The sale lasts for about a month and the items get restocked regularly. If you sign up for their VIP texting program, you can get coupons and additional discounts as well! Such a cute place! He shows his students new ways of thinking about what we really see- colors, shapes, relationships, and how it all creates an experience. I have a new way of looking at things. The Gallery is an exciting place that contains Bill's art library of books and tastefully displayed art of not only his works, but so many other talented artists. The paintings change frequently so every visit may be a different experience. Bill and his wife Linda are helping to put Caledonia on the map as an art destination. Their first community art show last fall helped to showcase the many talents of local artists. In April, the next community show will bring together area photographers. We came here to see Peter Pincus' ceramics show. The way they had the place laid out was ideal for perusing and each piece was better than the next. They get a cool mix of artists in this space so it's worth a stop if you're in the area or on your way back to Rochester following a few winery stops. They also have space upstairs, which features smaller pieces - lots of drawings and paintings hanging on the walls. On the first floor they have a very small store with some random supplies, books, knick knacks and gifts made by local artists including some jewelry on display. Whether or not this is something they do, it's a cool space for an event. I think they plan to host classes in the future which would be a nice addition.

I have been to 3 or 4 exhibits here in the past year (photography, watercolor, ceramics), and have been wowed by every one. They showcase a great variety of mediums, and there are usually multiple exhibits on display at a time, upstairs and down. They also have an artist in residence, and on our latest visit, we were able to meet him and get a first-hand introduction to his present project, which was really fascinating. I love to visit the gallery as part of an afternoon outing. Usually we end up spending an hour or so in the gallery appreciating all the exhibits, then we go across the street to Warfield's for lunch or dinner. Warfield's has great food, a focus on local beer and wine, and a changing, seasonal menu. It's a great way to spend an afternoon. The current exhibit featured in the downstairs gallery is of alternative photography and is definitely a must-see. As a photographer who practices several alternative styles (wet plate collodion, kallitypes, palladium printing, cyanotypes, tin types, etc) I was blown away. The subject matter, size of the pieces, different styles from photo gravure to cyanotypes to tin types, all of it is amazing. And coming up on April 1st, one of the featured artists (tin type master and alternative photography innovator John Coffer!) will have a free workshop, which is by reservation - so go see the show and sign up!

Writers and Books is a wonderful non-profit literacy center dedicated to promoting reading and…read morewriting. They have a book store on site and host workshops, and events with authors in person. The building is quite large and has on site parking with a back lot. I was very excited to learn of a free event with graphic journalist Joe Sacco. The event was free and I found great value in the conversation with Joe Sacco and Daniel Worden. I learned a lot about the authors body of work and felt it was a great evening focused on the arts. I also learned Writers and Books hosts events like this throughout the year and brings authors to the Rochester area to discuss their works. As previously mentioned, The book store had new and used books, including books by the visiting author available to purchase and have signed. I also enjoyed an interactive typewriter display where you can type out a line and add to what others have written before you. A wonderful organization with a worthy cause, I hope to attend more events in the future and visit the bookstore when in the area.
