The interior was small and... well... odd. It reminded me of my great-aunt Marie's farmhouse. Upon immediately walking in the door I saw that a large bakery case was empty. I almost walked out thinking the place was going out of business. However, we grabbed a table in the (small) dining room and perused the limited menu. We ordered roast beef, but they were out of it. We ordered soup, but they had none to offer. Discouragement set it, but we persevered. Finally, our subs and sandwiches arrived! They all came with a side of BBQ chips. Now... BBQ chips are my favorite, so I perked up immediately. Let me shout this: THE SUB ROLLS WERE HOMEMADE! They were delicious. Fantastic flavor. Perfect texture and crumb. The subs were piled with meat, which tasted high quality. Kid #1 swore her turkey was Boar's Head. Maybe it was or maybe it wasn't, but it was definitely quality meat. My cheesesteak was fantastic, and the Italian sub was spot-on. The burger was just average, but the delicious HOMEMADE bun made up for it. All the veggies (lettuce, tomato, etc.) on our subs seemed fresh. The owner(?) dropped some free pastries at our table, too. Sweet, tender, and tasty! It's just a very small storefront among others. They have no fluff or thrills just homey mismatched tables and chairs in a very small dining area but all reminiscent of a Sunday afternoon at grandmas where you knew something extra special was cooking up back in the kitchen and your mouth watered with anticipation. The food here is so on point! The service is even better if that's possible! This sweet crew takes very obvious pride and pleasure in what they do and it shows brilliantly! Freshly baked breads and delicious fresh ingredients and meats that create works of art for the stomach! But save room for the fresh baked desserts! Out of this world delicious! The best chicken salad around and the subs are so fresh and flavorful! I can't decide which is better, the kind and attentive folks that work here or the food! But one thing is for sure, you'll feel blessed by both! Can't wait to return! The name may reek of a needlepoint slogan on a pot holder at a Baptist church bazaar, granted, but the food is terrific and the service outstanding. We (per the advice of friends in southwestern Virginia) stopped in for the Sunday buffet. I grew up on Southern food, as my father's family (southern Oklahoma and Texas ) and Mother's family (southern Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi) never stopped cooking traditional favorites. My husband and I loved the thick, fluffy biscuits, the tender and perfect scrambled eggs, and the savory, buttery grits. I don't know where it came from, but my paternal grandmother used to sometimes bring greens (usually collards) to the breakfast table on occasion. Well, I asked our server if she might be able to scrounge some up to go with my breakfast. As it turns out, she actually had some back in the kitchen and -- although it was a little unorthodox -- she heated them up and brought them out for me to enjoy. (Now THAT'S what I call going above and beyond!) Someone told us later that the restaurant is a family-owned one, and that's run by different generations of one family. (I LOVE that!) The coffee was hot and fresh, and we bought a bag of assorted pastries for friends in Hillsville before we headed back down into southwestern Virginia. Just wonderful. Highest praise. read more

The lemon donuts were AMAZING and the loving family service was even better. We arrived late in the morning after much of the inventory had been sold off and the owner/baker gave us full size samples! We bought nearly one of of everything that was left and each muffin, donut, and fritter was the best we'd ever had! We stopped by after hours to look in the window and the owners opened up for us to get some donuts. We ended up with donuts and a creme puff the size of a child's head! A warm embrace... That's the feeling one gets at What A Blessing Bakery. Perhaps it's the scent of the fresh-baked breads, pastries and home-cooked food here; the sensation of comfort that permeates from the salmon-colored walls and large, old furniture from grandmother's farmhouse; or the always-welcoming faces of the friendly and polite staff. Without a doubt, this little place, ironically tucked in-between a Laundromat and ABC Store in the Ambriar Plaza exudes cheeriness. We first encountered "Blessings" by accident. We had finished dinner at the nearby Briar Patch and wandered across the street to walk off our meal and pick up local real estate flyers. During our stroll, we spotted the sign for the bakery and strolled over to investigate. As we pushed our faces up to the glass to catch a glimpse of the breads and pastries within the closed store, an SUV pulled up behind us. Turns out, it was the owner, Gilbert Rose. Rather than shoo us away after our sheepish "hello", he invited us in. While we looked over his menu, Gilbert placed a sampling of his wares in a bag for us to take home and try - gratis. Impressed with this generosity, we returned the next morning for breakfast as Gilbert laughingly shared the account of our meeting with his wife, Patricia. Blessings keeps the menu simple. For a big breakfast, the ample platter includes scrambled eggs, home-style potatoes, spiced apples, bacon or sausage links and toasted homemade bread. It's enough to skip lunch and probably dinner as well. Alternatively, try one of the large, moist muffins - the selection depends upon what Gilbert feels like baking - or sweet doughnuts. An "everything" muffin from a past visit featured a conglomerate of bran, raisins, coconut, berries and chocolate chips! Traditional and flavored coffees are brewed from just-ground beans. Various teas and juices are available as well. Lunch selections include a selection of cold cuts and cheeses on fresh-baked breads, chips or deli side salads. The real star is the Saturday breakfast buffet. Fare includes the aforementioned eggs, potatoes, apples and meats plus grits, biscuits, sausage gravy, sweet potatoes and whatever else Patricia whips up. If you see quiche, grab it quickly - it's wonderful. The sausage links have a nice spicy kick and the bacon is thin, crispy and meaty. The dense and heavy biscuits stand up well to the sausage gravy. There are also various pastries including doughnuts and Danish, as well as fresh fruit and boxed cereals. Best to arrive early because Blessings packs them in for this feast. A few years ago, Patricia started to offer a lunch buffet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Think down-home, Southern cooking like fried chicken, mac n' cheese and greens. Fish is featured on Fridays. Don't forget to peruse the pastries and muffins as well as pies (such as classic chess pie), yeast rolls and breads. Blessings also creates and delivers wedding cakes. Service is typically prompt and courteous. Occasionally, however, a young server gets the "deer in the headlights" look, but Patricia is usually nearby to keep things smoothly running. Also, the Saturday breakfast buffet can become quite crowded. As a result, navigating among the close tables can make things, well, cozy. Similarly, there have been lulls when the kitchen could not maintain pace, leaving diners hungry for more eggs or with watery grits that did not have adequate time to steep and thicken. Nonetheless, based upon the happy mood among patrons who quickly make friends with those at nearby tables or in the buffet line, these inconveniences are trivial and offset by the overall quality of the home cooking. The tone of any business is set by the owner. The kindness and warmth that Gilbert showed us during our first encounter was genuine, and is clearly instilled in the bread, the cooking, the staff and the dining room at What A Blessing Bakery. We stopped in for lunch one day on our way back to North Carolina. At first, I wasn't quite sure that we had walked in the right door -- I thought we had entered a tidy antique store, or possibly even someone's living space. We were greeted warmly and took our seats in the dining room. Freshly brewed coffee and generously-sized drinks were followed by enormous and very tasty sandwiches! All three of us had the tuna salad -- with your choice of fixins' -- on delicious homemade wheat rolls, accompanied by chips. Save room for their complimentary, homemade glazed donuts: they are some of the best I have ever had! Freshly made -- with just a hint of lemon -- and melted in our mouths. Just amazing! Been there a few times to get lunch for take out for my job...and eaten there once as a sit down a few times. Now for pros and cons. Pros - Freshly made bread, muffins, donuts, and about any other kind of pastry you could imagine. Buffet is a good deal for some good home cooked food. Cons - A bit pricey. A foot long chicken salad sub was $8 and only came with very few toppings such as mayo, lettuce and tomatoes. Could have gone to Subway down the road and gotten the same thing with more toppings for way cheaper. Service is hit or miss depending on who is working since some of the servers can be a little "lost" at times. Menu is never the same since its a local business and it really depends on what the owners/cooks feel like making that day. All in all its a good place to eat if you like some good home cooked food but the price is not worth what you get on some items. read more

What a Blessing is truly a blessing!!! The food is wonderful!! Everything is home made including all the breads and pastries. I've been here several times for the breakfast buffet and lunch buffet as well as just for a sandwich. You can tell everything is made with love. The buffets are wonderful, filled with comfort food! The sandwiches for lunch are overstuffed with whatever you want on them on home made bread and rolls. They have the very best chicken salad you have ever eaten!! Their fresh made soups are wonderful too!! The service is very good. Everyone is very kind and helpful. The atmosphere is very cheerful and homey with antique buffets and furniture. The bathrooms are very clean and never run out of hand soap or toilet paper. I highly recommend What a Blessing! A previous reviewer said the sub could be gotten at Subway for cheaper and more toppings. The sandwiches and subs at Subway don't have nearly as much filling as you will find in the overstuffed sandwiches and subs at What A Blessing. They are very generous with the meat and cheese on their sandwiches. The sandwiches at What A Blessing are a much greater value because the ingredients are fresher and you get more filling and the bread and rolls are made right there fresh everyday!! I'm always disappointed with Subway because their sandwiches and subs never look like the pictures that advertise them! read more
