Until I located this review, I was hesitant because there were very few reviews. However, I reviewed the photos, reviews and website and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of work. I decided to book four reservations for my family. I knew I was taking a risk because everyone kept asking me if this was a good choice. I like the instant communication that is received to confirm your appointment. The makeup artist was in communication with me within the hour. I…read morehad actually hired another make up artist before I found DaNina, but long story short, the other lady fell through last minute, and I was left 2 months out from my big day with out a make up artist. O_O Needless to say, I was a panicked bride. I found DaNina on yelp - she had great reviews on all of the wedding sites as well. I sent a pricing inquiry on her website, after looking at her work, I was really impressed at how diverse her portfolio was! There were brides of all different cultures, and every single one of them was so BEAUTIFUL! She responded within 24 hours of my inquiry, which is really important for a time pressed bride... Before I knew it, we scheduled a trial run. She was very flexible with my time. My schedule can get a little crazy, but she worked with me. We had the trail at my house. She showed up early, and (as usual) I was late... to my own house.. lol. But she was super nice about it! She came prepared with all of make up that you can ever need, her own light, and this comfy make up chair as well. I opted for air brushed foundation, a smoky eye and a burgundy lip that matched my bridal shoes :) I had a few pictures of what I wanted, and she sure did execute! She did an amazing job! I loved everything about the look that she created for me! I also wanted an up-do, and she had her hair stylist Sonya Rivera come in for that. Sonya did an amazing job with my up-do and waterfall braid. Both of these ladies are as sweet as pie, and you can definitely sense the camaraderie between them. I'm not really a girly-girl, so I was honestly kind of dreading getting my make up done, It was not nearly as awkward as I thought it was going to be! They are both so warm and kind, and they have a way of just making you feel comfortable. DaNina created a schedule with all of my bridesmaids/mom that were getting serviced. She sent it to me a couple days before the actual day so we knew what to expect. The morning of my wedding was ABSOLUTELY bananas. We were running behind schedule, but DaNina & Sonya kept their composure (way better than I did) and did their thing. Everyone was so happy with their hair and make up! I was getting compliments from everyone about beautiful I looked, and for once, I actually felt like it! I was a beautiful bride thanks to both of these ladies! The best thing was how long it lasted! My make up stayed in place ALL night, which is really impressive because I sweat PROFUSELY. It's like someone turns a faucet on when I sweat. (Seriously, my Husband had to keep a tissue in his pocket, and was sweet enough to dab me when we were at the alter! Hilarious, but also necessary as I was sweating bullets!). And you can tell that she really cares about doing a good job. And she does do a good job. And shoutout to Rob at the Midtown location for giving me bangs. I don't think I would love them so much if he weren't the one who cut them. They have free bangs trimmings here, so whenever I get my highlights done, I ask Rob to trim my bangs, and he does. He's very thoughtful about cutting hair. Especially with bangs. He will ask for pictures, and if you can't find any, he will pull up his own pictures on his iPad to help you figure out what you want. He also is an artistic genius and will recommend things that work with your facial structure better. I thought I wanted curtain bangs but he recommended a more straight cut of bangs, and I am so thankful he did. If you want a good haircut that makes you look like you can afford the best of the best (aka Rob), you need to see Rob. Even when my hair isn't blow dried or straightened or whatever, it looks amazing when I wake up and go to sleep. He gave me layers once and, if you'll believe it, it changed my social life for the better. Also he's very good at getting people to talk about their lives. Inquisitive and talented. If you have your own strong preferences and he recommends otherwise, you can still tell him what you prefer and he'll happily do it, but he knows so much about what looks good on different people, so I'd definitely listen to him. He's done my little teenage brothers' hair before and they appreciate him a lot too, which says a lot because they're picky teenage boys. They come home from the appointments with their heads held a little higher in confidence. I don't think it's possible to leave Van Michael Salon without your head held a little higher.

To find a trusting stylist is so very hard, and knowing I have a safe space with my hair during all of its transitions and the respect I feel on a personal level is so heartwarming.
