There are no adults in the room. I could go on with this unrelated, unprompted tangent, but all this is to say that the Hospital for Special Surgery restored my faith in humanity. My mother needed an partial knee replacement, and as her primary helper in all things, I handled the communication, brought her to her appointments, brought her in for surgery, waited, and took her home. Please believe me when I say that every step of the process was handled efficiently, and every one of the many, many people we dealt with was not just good at their job, but they were also courteous and usually downright lovely. Having spent time in several hospitals, this was not what I expected. It was what I hoped for of course, but certainly hasn't been my past experience. From the security personnel who welcomed us to the check-in desk to the intake folks to the nurses who prepped her to the surgeon who operated to the folks who run the Family Atrium where we wait for our people to get released to the nurses who took care of my mom post-op, everyone was organized and impressively on top of things. We had a very slight hiccup with her prescriptions, and the nurse in charge was mortified and immediately worked quite tirelessly to make sure it was taken care of, and later followed up with me to make sure we were all set. I'm not pretending that this will not be an annoying and repetitive process. There is waiting involved (less than you might think though). And if you have surgery, you're going to have seventeen different people ask you who you are, your birth date, what surgery you're getting and more...but better that than them replacing the wrong knee. Best of all, the surgery went smoothly and a little more than a week out, my mom is doing great. If and when I need surgery of my own, I will gladly come to HSS.

I suggest to anyone suffering from knee complications to keep in mind that you and your mindset are the #1 factor in your outcomes regardless of the doctor. You have to do your part, put in the work, and do your research. No doctor is a magician. As far as Doctor Strickland goes, you are in the most capable hands for this type of complication. Whether you choose maintenance or surgery, she is the very best. However, if you are defeated with unrealistic expectations and have a poor attitude, no doctor will ever cure what ails you. Furthermore, to have a successful outcome, you need to manage your health through exercise and weight management. And, you need to do the post-op or post-diagnosis physical therapy. If you don't, you may have difficulty with achieving a successful outcome, regardless of the doctor. There is a reason Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City is the top-ranked hospital in the United States for orthopedics for 2024-2025, and has held that title for 15 years in a row. My right knee has been a problem for me since my twenties. I've injured it multiple times in a…read moremyriad of ways since I was a pre-teen. I twisted it so severely as a pre-teen in a crash through a fence on my horse, that I couldn't walk on it properly fo months. My mom looked at it after the crash, determined it wasn't broken and told me to tough it out. I've crashed on it multiple times racing bicycles and had two good falls on it in motorcycle crashes. There was also that time I was swinging on a rope swing and nailed the patella so hard on a rock that I passed out. Long story short, during my last MRI, it showed that there was no longer any thing between my patella and the knee joint. Bone on bone baby. A friend gave me Dr. Marx's name. He had worked on a good friend of hers and said the surgery was life changing. That's what I needed to hear. I was already seeing a doctor in Connecticut and in the middle of hyaluronic acid injections when I went to visit him. I essentially wanted a second opinion. After looking at my MRI and X-Ray films, he confirmed what I already essentially knew...he said, "You need a knee replacement". We scheduled my surgery for three months out and I got to work readying myself for recovery. I spent the next three months working with a personal trainer in order to speed my recovery process. I saw Dr. Marx a couple days before surgery. He answered all my questions about equipment, PCL sparing vs. non-sparing patiently and the only request I had for him was to make the incision as small as possible. Surgery seemed to have gone well and on Saturday morning, his fellow came by to see me and pulled the bandage off to take a look at it. I was delighted to see that he had, in fact used an incredibly small incision to perform the surgery. I was beside myself with joy! I was impressed with the level of swelling from the day of surgery forward. In general, it was hard to believe looking at it that I had had such a morbid surgery. I really felt like he and his team handled it with care. It meant a lot to me that he showed up to see how I was doing on Sunday morning before I checked out. Twelve days out, I'm walking without a cane and I already have over 90 degrees ROM...97 to be exact. I start outpatient PT on Tuesday and hope to be spinning on my bike in the basement on Friday. THE BAD: I've waited for appointments for over an hour, had the office say I wasn't covered for something after they said it was (much to my panic), arrived at the office for my first appointment just to find out my doctor had called in sick that day (the heck?), and been sent to the wrong office location (they moved locations and the email had the wrong location). When I came in after getting a MRI and my doctor didn't look at the results herself, just read the interpretation. THE ANNOYING: They charge a fee for using credit card on your copay.

I went to podiatrist Dr. Christine Ellie and she diagnosed me with a heel bone fracture using only an ultrasound; no x-ray was ever taken. She told me, "I don't need to do an x-ray because we can see the fracture clearly in the ultrasound." Based on that + my lack of serious pain at the time of the appointment, I was put in a boot for 3 weeks and started physical therapy. The day before my follow-up appt 3 weeks later, the office called to say Dr. Ellie was no longer available and I'd need to reschedule. After trying to reschedule for a few minutes on the call, I expressed frustration about delaying the appointment because I was hoping to get my boot off. Hearing this, the attendant immediately reversed course: "Oh, it's to get your boot off? In that case, we can keep the same appointment." Draw your own conclusions, but that exchange made it clear the "unavailability" wasn't the real reason for the reschedule. At the follow-up, Dr. Ellie again used only an ultrasound. This time she told me there were "minor fractures" and that I needed 8 additional weeks in the boot, with physical therapy discontinued. That's a significant jump from the original prognosis, and it moved in the wrong direction after I'd done everything asked of me. Between the lack of an x-ray, the misleading reschedule, and the ballooning recovery timeline, I sought a second opinion. That podiatrist was surprised an x-ray had never been done, since it's standard for diagnosing fractures. To my surprise, after doing the x-ray with that second podiatrist, the screening showed no fracture at all, just a severe ankle sprain. Dr. Christine Ellie performed no x-ray. I received a dishonest explanation for a rescheduled appointmen, and a fracture diagnosis that turned out to be wrong. If you're looking for a podiatrist with your best interest in mind, I'd strongly encourage anyone considering this office to seek care elsewhere.

Dr Kew must have done a great job. I was referred to her by a rehab doctor and I was told that Dr Kew tends to be more conservative in her treatment and will only recommend surgery if it is truly necessary. I particularly appreciate this approach (who would want to get cut open?!). She is also incredibly patient. There was one time I was late for my appointment but she was still willing to see me. I overheard her conversation a little bit on the phone with another patient discussing the treatment option and whether surgery is the best course of action. I waited for 25 minutes in the room but I didn't mind because I knew she was doing her job to help another patient and well I was late. At the end, she said "I had endless time for you" to the other patient on the phone as the door to my room propped open. Such work ethics is admirable. Also, Dr Kew and her PA Michelle will respond to message on the app quickly even on the weekends. I am glad to have found her and her team, and to be on my way to full recovery.
