My wife went to visit Andrew Goldstein 9 days ago. Last year she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she was operated on. Andrew Goldstein did not tell her anything that she did not already know. Now she feels simply violated and cheated. We wasted $1800 and more importantly we wasted our time. Seeing how my wife has been feeling, I highly recommend that you save your time and money and visit a gynecologist or a dermatologist depending on the condition. read more

Transformative for me. I flew in from LA for the appointment and surgery- and it was 100% worth it. I saw several top-rated LA Drs who were completely dismissive and unhelpful as well as months of PT before going to see him. He is a busy surgeon so he doesn't follow up much after the surgery but I'm ok with that! I did go to a physical therapist for 3 sessions post recovery as the final piece. If it weren't for this doctor I would continue to live a life full of pain and neurological damage. For many years I had so much pain in my vulva and also thought I had chronic uti's even though my uti tests were negative. I went to so sooo many different doctors and no one could figure out what the source of my pain was. After 15 years it just gradually got worse and I finally found a doctor who specializes in vulva dysfunctions. God bless this doctor who took the time and life's work on helping woman like me who go through a whirlwind of doctors to no avail. Dr. Andrew Goldstein was the only doctor who figured out what I had through an MRI, explained it to me in plain English, even with a diagram he sketched and recommend an excellent surgeon who performed a successful surgery and amazing recovery. No one had even heard of what my diagnosis was. It was a rare spine disease but he figured it out. I didn't have to continue a life of debilitating pain and distress. Thanks to this amazing doctor who I am eternally grateful. read more

I find it wild that any medical practice would charge $1,650.00 for a single new patient appointment (as this one does in their DC office, their NYC office is actually even more expensive at $1,800). I am financially comfortable/fortunate (2 income household, no kids) and yet would never consider paying that. It feels predatory and unethical to exploit desperate women experiencing poorly understood chronic pelvic pain with that fee structure. I've seen multiple doctors who didn't take insurance whose new patient appointments were in the $300-$400 range. I thought that was expensive; never thought a $1,650 appointment would be suggested by anyone. I am extremely disappointed in the healthcare system, the state of women's healthcare, and this specific practice. I hope they will reconsider their exorbitant rates currently only allowing this necessary medical care for the very few fortunate enough to somehow have endless funds. Alright so after getting 17 PMs from various ladies over the past three years asking for names of ob/gyns who deal with vulvodynia, I wondered how many more ladies were out there needing help so I've decided to share the names of doctors hoping that this will assist more people. Of course, I am happy to share and divulge my story, chat as well as some recommendations/tips so feel free to PM me. As for the positive reviews - of course, Dr. Goldstein can and has surely helped some women, or else he wouldn't have his reputation as one of the top doctors in this field. And of course the surgery has had to help some women. And I'm really happy to hear that it has helped them! Nevertheless the majority of women I've talked to (and I've heard from quite a few) have had a negative experience with him. From being bullied into doing an expensive surgery, to being dismissed after the surgery didn't work... I still have nightmares about my experience with him. And unlike one reviewer stated, it is actually helpful to talk about those things and share our stories so that we do not feel completely isolated and helpless. It also serves as a word of caution - you can still go see Goldstein but shop around some more and talk to other doctors in the area too to make sure you make the best decision with the most information available... While pushing for the surgery, Goldstein affirmed that there was NO ONE else in the DC area that dealt with my condition. And lord behold a month after my $8500 surgery, I found out that actually there are options out there. I certainly wish someone would have gone on yelp and given me other options! I got my contact information on doctors in my area that can treat vulvodynia from the National Vulvodynia Association a few years ago - their website is nva.org . For an updated list, you have to register and pay like $50 and then they will contact you and ask you for your address and send you a list of doctors, physical therapists, and sex therapists in your area. You're not supposed to share this list but I don't believe in hiding information from people suffering from a condition. I was so happy when I found Dr. Goldstein. He knew how to cure my issues after having had a my ovaries removed a decade earlier due to breast cancer. I spent almost 3,000 dollars with him which is an incredible hardship for me. None of my insurance would pay for any of it. My cure requires a cream that must be prescribed by Dr. Goldstein. I called in March and explained that I was moving to Mexico to live with an ailing sister and asked if I could get a refill. I was told that it had been too long since I'd seen the Doctor (over 365 days) and I could not get a refill and there was not enough time for an appointment which would run about $500.00. In conclusion I think he is good but money is king to him. Be prepared for a huge investment that could go on for years. read more

My experience with Dr. Goldstein was nothing but positive. He took me from hopelessness to a complete recovery. I was told by multiple doctors that there was nothing that could be done for me, but now I have been pain free from almost a year. The physical exam was unpleasant but he explained everything as he went and made it as comfortable as possible. My mother was with me the entire time. Dr. Goldstein has been my doctor for over 15 years and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about him. He is excellent and dedicated to the field of women's gynecological health. I saw Dr. Marinoff for years, another leading Vulvodynia specialist whose practice in Washington, DC, Dr. Goldstein took over, before seeing Dr. Goldstein. I have been all around the world for 30 years having had many surgeries with and treated by the leading experts on Vulvodynia (which Dr. Goldstein is one) at Johns Hopkins, Weill Cornell Medical Center, the Institute of Sexual Medicine in San Diego, the University of Chicago Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center and other fine medical centers. I am fortunate that Dr. Goldstein is so close by in Washington, DC, and I can run to him whenever I need to do so. Dr. Goldstein has treated me successfully for many conditions over the years from ruptured ovarian cysts to Interstitial Cystitis to hormone replacement to uterine fibroids to various infections to a hysterectomy, etc..... Unfortunately, my inflammatory condition is very complex and no one treatment has completely helped me. It certainly hasn't been for a lack of trying by Dr. Goldstein and others! Besides performing his own research, Dr. Goldstein stays completely on top of all of the medical research in this field. He has written the only textbook and book on painful gynecological and sexual disorders in women. Since I am so complex and not the typical patient, he is always searching for a new way to treat my recurring inflammation. We have tried medications, hormones, surgeries, physical therapy, interferon injections and many other treatments. Some have completely helped some aspects of my problem and some symptoms have reappeared due to my difficult case and other complexities. Dr. Goldstein consults with other leading doctors in the field constantly about my inflammation and has gotten back to me immediately while I was recently in pain from an infection while in Italy and he was in China. His office doesn't take insurance but I get reimbursed when I send in his bills to my insurance company, once my deductibles are met. I've been so happy while sitting in Dr. Goldstein's office hearing the stories of all of the women he has helped over the years. They come from all over the world to see him. This is not an easy field of medicine. Much more money, research and education needs to be undertaken to help all of the woman who are suffering. I would do no stars if I could. I wasn't going to write a review at all but my husband urged me to. Appt #1 fall 2010. Crazy woman on phone gives me hard sell (feels a little like a used car dealership which is creepy) but I am desperate and in terrible pain. I drive from NYC to DC because 2 month wait in NYC. I pay $1400 out of pocket for assembly line treatment of super expensive medicine that has to be mailed from 1 special pharmacy in Maryland. The whole time he seems rushed and disinterested and his 2 nurses are acting like it's their 1st day. Appt #2 spring 2011. Down to 1 nurse now. She's literally limping and looking like she's going to pass out which makes me think he maybe needs to hire back a #2 since people like that probably aren't that careful. Crazy woman still giving the hard sell to people on the phone. You can hear her all the way in the waiting room so, um, privacy?? Doctor tells me to wean off cream in the 3 minutes he is in the room with me. After 1 week of weaning I am right back where I started so I call. He takes 4 days to call me back. He is clearly in public (subway? Airport?) when he calls. Aside from the fact that he will now be blabbing about my vagina to whoever is around him, we can barely hear each other and he is acting uber annoyed that I am calling about being in pain and he tells me that "This isn't a sprint". It's been 8 months and $2500 I'm no better than when I started. I decide that this treatment is not for me but I really can't afford another appointment and I am obviously not going to get help or even attention on the phone so I give up. Life goes on, I deal, end up having 2 kids in just under 2 years so, sex = not a priority. Fall of 2017 rolls around. 2nd kid now in full day in school, let's see if there is anything new besides that stupid mail order cream. First - I was an early morning appointment and they still managed to see me an hour late after assuring me they NEVER double book. Second - after they bring me in & I talk to the doctor, I go to the exam room to get undressed where I wait AGAIN for like 20 minutes. If you don't double book, what are you doing all that time? Third - WHOLE. NEW. STAFF. In my Primary's office I think 1 person has left in the last 11 years. Here not so much. Fourth - Surprise. I'm a new patient all over again. Oh, and now I need surgery. for $12,000 IN ADDITION to the $1500 I just paid to be a NEW PATIENT AGAIN, plus whatever the hospital charges. I'm still not sure if this was a just keep trying things till we figure it out or something sinister. Either way, it was clear that I was not going to get what I needed. BONUS. New nurse spent the whole time I was waiting in the exam room, in the room next door talking on the phone about her old job (or other job - she has terrible grammar so it's hard to tell) and some beauty pageant she was in AT FULL SURROUND SOUND VOLUME. Even if the doctor was playing games on his phone and you are too lazy to find work to do, be discreet FFS. patients don't want to listen to your inane personal conversations while you keep them waiting. Seems to be knowledgeable, but after you pay a ton of money (around $1500-1600) for the first consultation (which is an hour long), he is extremely unresponsive and terrible with follow up, just like Natasha K. said. I highly recommend Dr. Goldstein. He changed my life. I had pain for so many years that I didn't even know it was abnormal. I could not be more satisfied with the results of my surgery. I have not had any pain at all since then. Prior to seeing him I had tried numerous treatments for my Vulvodynia including pelvic floor PT for months. He recommended that I wait an additional 6 months after my consultation to ensure that I actually needed the surgery. He took the time with me and assuaged all my fears about the surgery. I have been a patient of Dr. Goldstein's since April of 2011. At fist I was on high alert with all the negative reviews I have read not only on yelp but on other websites. My first visit was informative and I felt like I was well on the way to recovery. However, every time I call his office for a refill or to ask a question no one EVER answers the phone. My phone calls are rarely returned and when they are very rude and pushy women named Meg answers the phone. She is horrible, insulting and has completely ruined my experience with his office. The previous review was long winded but definitely accurate. He indeed charges $1400 for initial consult and $400 for the next office visit. I have been suffering for the last 17 years with a certain condition that he diagnosed a Lichen Simplex Chronicus and assured me he would "get me better". Here I am over a year later and things have even gotten worse. He doesn't return phone calls very well so, after not hearing back from him for about a month, I had a lawyer contact him telling him either treat me, refer me to someone who can, or give me my $1800 back. Pathetic. He is a "specialist" who does not know how to follow up with his patients and doesn't show any sort of compassion. He just scribbles notes on a piece of paper to take home and acts as if he knows all. I am really shocked by the bipolar reviews of Dr. Goldstein. I have a degree in neuroscience and work in medical research. I went to see Dr. Goldstein because I COULD NOT HAVE SEX, NOT ALL. Other doctors said it was in my head (at least 3) and told me I should have a glass of wine and "just relax." Another doctor had me work with vagainal dilators for almost a year- it was complete torture and I still couldn't have sex with my fiance. Then I went to see Dr. Goldstein. His exam confirmed that I was born with too many nerve ending at the entrance to the vagina. He gave me several mediacl research articles to read and after reading them I was convinced that his hypothesis was correct. He offered several treatments but I had hadenough and wanted surgery (vulvar vestibulectomy) Other women on other websites have called this surgery "genital mutilation." Nothing could be further from the truth! The tissue removed from the surgery CONFIRMED that there were too many nerve ending- just like Goldstein said. Four months after surgery I made love with my fiance for the first time! It still hurt a little bit but by 6 months I was having pain free sex and by 8 months I was really starting to enjoy it. I highly recommend Dr. Goldstein. He honestly gave me my the oppurtunity to have a normal marriage. I do not know why some other women ave given negative reviews. He was always responsive to my questions. As a scientist, I sometimes had almost 20 of them. I also don't know why one woman said he is not responsive to phone calls. He gave me his cell phone number ( I have never had another doctor do that) and it is even on the office voicemail after hours. I saw Dr. Goldstein for vulvodynia and after spending about an hour with me and having me pay out of pocket over a grand, he prescribed his go-to compound. I used it as prescribed and had no complaints. I became pregnant and had questions regarding the continued use. I left a message twice, over two weeks. NO ONE CALLED ME BACK. I had stopped the compound on my own, once finding out I was pregnant, however I wanted to speak to a specialist to see if I NEEDED to completely stop it and if so, were there any other options during my pregnancy (so that I could continue to have intercourse). After no phone call, I stopped by the office, as I was in the neighborhood getting a sonogram. I asked the question to the nurse and was treated very gruffly and with little respect. She told me that I need to ask all questions to my OB and that they could no longer offer me any advice. The problem is is that MY OB DOES NOT SPECIALIZE in vulvodynia and Dr. Goldstein does. read more

I wrote a review before but wanted to provide another update as I have improved more daily and it appears that my former issues are a thing of the past. I feel as if I have been cured. It saddens me to read the negative reviews- especially when I look at former doctors who misdiagnosed me and caused so much heartache who might have good reviews. There is a reason that Dr. Goldstein has performed more surgeries than anyone else in the country. I do not know why all the cured patients aren't on here because they are all on the facebook support pages for women who have vestibulitis, including a page we developed. As for being pushed into surgery, I wish surgery had been recommended long ago. I wish I hadn't been pushed into physical therapy, told over and over that my muscles were too tight and that I needed to relax, prescribed medication that caused disorientation, and was never told about the best option possible for me. After months of expensive physical therapy I finally decided to look at myself at my body as being valuable enough to shell out some extra dollars on- I did careful research and decided to see Dr. Goldstein. He had written books on the subject, appeared on television, and was an expert in his field. Well he did recommend surgery for me quickly. He was careful when doing so, merely providing statistics, but I went on his site, read his research articles and saw the videos and read his books. He was also pleasant to speak with, and his staff was very nice to me- of course I admit that I wasn't concerned with his bedside manner, only whether or not he would cure me. I have so much anxiety that I was nervous during the healing process. I will say- yes- I was nervous about contacting Dr. Goldstein because I was told by one other woman that he was grouchy about that- hey I'm not going to lie, this girl said he made her cry, but other women said he was great. However, after reading his research article, I just shrugged my shoulders and didn't worry. I followed his directions and just dealt with every issue by saying oh its normal and sure enough I healed beautifully and am now a new woman. He cost way more than 12 K for me- the hospital was expensive, and one other complaint I have is that it wasn't suggested for me to go to New York where I hear the expenses would have been 5 K less (imagine the hotel room I could have stayed in!) yet at the end of the day, I can still say that Dr. Goldstein and this surgery made such a profoundly positive change, that complaining over even 5 K is like complaining over 5 cents. Think about it- not having a kid, not having sex, is there any comparison, really? If other doctors were as confident then that would be one thing, but I saw two doctors- one an expert at Emory- and they provided low success rates and dismal hope. I might never know what would have happened if I saw a cheaper doctor, but I can only say what DID happen. Please do your research- read his articles, read his books, and ask any other doctor his/her success rate and how many surgeries he/she has performed. Go onto the vestibulitis support group on Facebook. While there were a couple of complaints, most of us were very happy. I also found that he was nice to me and he was to other women on there. I will admit that support group helped greatly in getting through all of this. People are quick to write about the negative and not the positive, as is evident by all the success stories in my meetup group that still have not written a review! read more

I had the best experience with Dr. Goldstein. After 10 months of pain and 7 different doctors who treat anyone with "vulvodynia" with standard first line treatment .. then second and so on, this was the first doctor who evaluated and treated me as an individual. He did not give me an umbrella diagnosis, he concentrated on getting to the route of my problem and finding out what caused it. His treatments targets the cause (hormones), not just the symptoms. On top of this, Dr. G made me feel more comfortable than any other doctor ever has. He was so compassionate and caring. He listened to my entire history for an hour. He made jokes to make me laugh and calm my nerves. Most of my appointments start and end in tears and Dr. G and his staff who were in the room as well had me laughing the entire time. I was originally concerned about some of the reviews here. I don't understand how anyone could have had anything negative to say about this man's bedside manner. I am SO glad that I chose not to listen because I finally feel hopeful and uplifted. I am writing this review for women like me who are skeptical. I wish that I would have gone to Dr. Goldstein sooner. He is so thorough and knowledgeable. read more
