It's been a number of years since my mohs surgery but I would never recommend Dr. Kaufman. He didn't explain anything to me and was actually rude during my hours long procedure. His nurses didn't give me clear instructions and when I questioned him on my follow up visit he said they should have told you this. I was referred to Dr. Kaufman by my dermatologist to remove a basal cell from the top of the tip of my nose using Moh's surgery. I am a healthcare provider myself so I came to my appointment with certain expectations and I was not disappointed. Everyone from front office to nursing staff were highly responsive, professional and lovely to deal with. His procedural areas were immaculate and well organized-- something I look for. Dr. Kaufman is a consummate medical professional, he is very knowledgeable, easy to understand and answers all of your questions directly. If you want warm and fuzzy go down the block and you will find some one like that who may or may not have this level of experience and outcomes to hold your hand , you will see the difference in quality if you compare physicians and their training and education as I did. He's probably the best according to the reviews and he has 3 offices, but believe you me....you will pay for it. $250. just to see you which is not added to any treatment. With that said, I'm sure the treatments are much - much- more! So the 1 star is not for the services, but the pricey price tag. I was referred to Dr Kaufman by 2 doctors I respect. Cancer in any form is still cancer and nothing to ignore. What I thought was a small surface infection was much more when he went in. But 2 rounds and my cancer was removed. I've read the other reviews and some think Dr Kaufman has a poor bedside manner but I assure you that anyone who appreciates my dry sense of humor is top notch (and super smart). Especially while they are cutting into my face. When I have an enemy attacking my body, I want a warrior to seek and destroy. I don't care if they like me or can give me the warm and fuzzy approach. I work in emergency response and I have a full appreciation for the hours the office puts in, the pressure they experience every day and also the excellence I saw. Shout outs to Norma who held my hand, Tiffany for keeping things running smoothly, Krista and Dr Laura Blumenthal (who is learning the ropes). I'm impressed that when they said my appointment was a 8:20, they were ready for me at 8:20. I'm impressed with their compassion. No surprises through this entire process. I had a spot on my right temple and my Doctor referred me to Dr. Kaufman for the Mohs procedure due to my spots location. Since this was my first experience with skin cancer, I had some anxiety, but Dr. Kaufman came highly recommended. Upon my consultation, I was unsettled by his seemingly distant approach as well as his matter-of -fact monotone description of the procedure. While the "bedside manner" wasn't warm, the description was thorough. I can share that what he lacked in personality however, was made up for by his wonderful staff. That said, I did have reservations, but decided to stick with him. I'm glad I did. I am very happy to report that after 18 months, there is very little scarring and you literally have to search the temple to find the location, not that I really want to! Also, during the actual procedure, he was more approachable than in the initial consultation. He's busy...and I'm certain it is because of his results, which after all, isn't that why you chose a doctor?! read more

Dr Kaufman is meticulous and intelligent and has a reputation in the medical community for being the finest MOH's surgeon. He explains that what you want is a surgeon who will give you "the best scar," and he's exactly correct. I extensively researched MOH's surgeons to remove a basal cell carcinoma on a complicated part of my nose, right in the middle of my face. To say I was terrified after receiving this diagnosis would be an understatement. After a handful of consultations with recommended doctors around Los Angeles, I saw Dr. Kaufman (who's an hour outside of LA) and confirmed he was the surgeon for me. He uses a visual aid to explain the procedure and said he doesn't do skin grafts because they can become dislodged too easily (i.e. you bump your nose while sleeping). This and other well-thought-out explanations were key to my decision. My scar is small and colorless. The symmetry of my nose (one of his concerns) is intact. He was affable my first visit and a little crusty another time, but I was prepared for that because I was told his bedside manner is not his strong suit. I believe it's because his brain cells are wired to do excellent detail work that he cares deeply about, and are only sometimes fully accessible for social interactions. Although he did explain the procedure well and is an excellent teacher. The one casualty of the bedside manner issue was that because of the tight time schedule, I might not have received the best wound care instruction from the nurses, which is also integral to getting the best scar. I was told after it was too late that it would have been important to (gently but) thoroughly wash away the crusty dead skin cells around the stitches as they form. The office recommended using Bioderm cream, which worked well. Buy it from them (or whatever they're recommending) as I've heard reports of counterfeits sold on Amazon. I would add that - in my research - saline solution for cleaning the wound and vaseline before bandaging seemed to be the way to go, so I used that protocol. Apparently, hydrogen peroxide destroys fibrinogens and antibacterial ointments interfere with elements of cell regrowth. If Dr. Kaufman's recommends some other protocol, I'm sure that's great too. A cosmetic surgeon recommended opaque coverage of the area from the sun while walking/hiking outside for an entire year and said many of his patients don't leave the house for two weeks after a surgery like this because the sun is the enemy with regard to preventing visible scars. Lastly, if you're reading this because you have to have a MOH's surgery for basal cell carcinoma, I'd say, have courage, you'll feel so much better when you're on the other side of it. I'm glad I went with Dr. Kaufman. Go with whomever you feel comfortable with and good luck! read more

She spends ample time with me and answers all of my questions. I had Dr. Kaufman perform the Mohs procedure on a skin cancer that was located on my eyelid at the bridge of my nose. To say I was petrified is an understatement. My appearance could have been severely disfigured if not the amazing work of Dr. Kaufman. He had to go back four times to remove all of the cancer. He is absolutely amazing with a knife and so caring. His staff is also very caring and knowledgable. Today, you can barely tell there was anything removed from face. I LOVE my dermatologist Dr. Oki, she is thorough and caring but when it comes to performing surgery on the face, she refers her patients to Dr. Kaufman who is the BEST at what he does. This was my third MOHS surgery (the other two weren't with Dr. Kaufman). I confess I didn't have much confidence in him when I first met him. He was abrupt and a bit chilly. But his surgical skill dispelled my reservations. The MOHS procedure was quick, relatively painless, and done competently and efficiently. When I saw the tiny, well-wrought sutures, I was even more impressed. He's performed more than 10,000 MOHS procedures and it shows in his skill level. Dr. Kaufman just performed my Mohs surgery on Tuesday. I was very nervous going in, especially as this was on my face. Dr. Kaufman is amazing and so is his staff. Dr. Kaufman is a truly outstanding and talented MOHS surgeon. I just had another melanoma removed, and couldn't have asked for anything better. I had a prominent basal cell carcinoma taken off my face by Dr. Kaufman (using the Mohs method). The resulting scar was virtually invisible. The next time I had basal cell carcinoma on my cheek I went back to him. This time the cancer was much deeper so he had to take out much. It was a very emotional time for me. When he was done I had 17 stitches in my cheek. When the scar healed you would not even notice it! He is an artist and a perfectionist. I found Dr. Kaufman by accident, as he was referred to me by another dermatologist. Thank goodness this was a good accident. Dr. Kaufman is a superstar. I had a pre-cancerous area on face that Dr. K performed MOHS surgery on and required about 10 stitches. He did such an awesome job that you can't tell that anything was ever done to the area. Dr. Kaufman is an excellent provider. Very knowledgable and patient centered. The office is busy so you may wait a bit for your appointment to be scheduled and once scheduled - in the waiting room - but it is well worth the care you are going to receive! I had a small procedure and received excellent care all around. I now see Dr. Cole for general dermatology check ups who is excellent as well. She really spends her time with you. As an example - my last appointment three weeks ago with her was an hour. I have referred my entire family to this practice. I had a really good experience with his office staff, they are all so nice. He seems to be a very good doctor. BUT, he is in and out as quick as possible. I had to ask a question as he was walking out of the door. I felt like I was bothering him by being there. He is not a very warm doctor. I gave him 3 stars, because at the end of the day, he look care of my problem and his staff was very nice. But if I was rating him on how he made me feel, it would give him 1 star. Went to Dr. Kaufman to have the evil skin cancer removed. He is very intelligent, knows what looks good aesthetically and detail oriented. Dr. Kaufman is a excellent doctor & has a wonderful staff! I had basal cell carcinoma on the tip of my nose, which apparently is one of the most difficult spots to treat with a good result. I saw other highly recommended specialists before Dr. Kaufman & received very discouraging news from them. I was told that due to the location, the end result would most likely not be good. I happen to have a nice petite nose so to hear that was distressing. Then I saw Dr. Kaufman & he had a very different attitude & was confident that he could help me. My dermatologist recommended Dr. Kaufman to me and said if she were to need Mohs surgery, he is the person she would choose. This was my first experience with skin cancer and this procedure. Although Dr. Kaufman is very busy and doesn't waste time with chit-chat, I can appreciate this, as this enables him to fit in more patients. If I require the surgery again in the future, I would hate to wait months for because he takes fewer patients a day. He does amazing work, is patient explaining things and is very thorough. Although he is busy, he had me come back to the office many times after my appt in the following weeks because my recovery was a bit lengthier. They did not charge for follow-ups while they continued to check to ensure everything was healing properly. I have been using the Biocorneum twice a day as they recommended, and what seemed like it should be a ghastly scar across my forehead is hardly visible after just four months. I know that this is greatly due to his reconstructive surgery skills as well. The staff are wonderful - most businesses could learn a thing or two from them. Tiffany at the front desk has quite possibly the best customer service skills I have ever encountered. She was able to fit me in early, was friendly, caring, and welcoming. Although I am moving from the area, if I ever need this surgery again, I will be flying back for Dr. Kaufman to do it. Yesterday I had cancer on my nose, today it is gone! Dr. Kaufman is the expert I chose to help me. I am so happy I did. The bandage just came off and I am pleased with the results. It hasn't even been 24 hours since surgery was completed and the pain I've experienced has been minimal. Tylenol can do the job. I did need repeated cutting and tissue exam, then stitching and bandaging. It was all done in one day. I followed their instructions about rest and icing and I had no problems, even slept well last night. I am so impressed by their meticulous standards of cleanliness while undergoing the procedure as I know germs can be a problem. Bree the nurse who explained every detail of what I was about to experience and prepped my face for surgery was so kind, reassuring and pleasant. A surgery nurse held my hand as the surgeon did his magic. The office staff is wonderful, helpful in every way. Dr. Kaufman's office is busy as lots of people have skin cancer these days, but he made me feel like I was his only concern. I have had other surgeries before, but never facial. I find it important to have a skillful surgeon. Dr. Kaufman is very humble, but also very skillful and immaculate.
