I called Dr. Smith's office this morning, identified myself and then asked, "Is Dr Smith accepting new patients?" The response was not "yes" or "no" but rather, "What is your insurance?" I responded by saying, "Medicare and a supplemental." The response was, "No, he is not accepting new patients." I said, "thank you," and hung up. Ten minutes later, I called back to the office, identified myself and asked, "Why did you ask the question about insurance coverage if the doctor is no longer accepting patients?" She responded by saying, "We always ask about insurance coverage?" I replied, "But if you're not accepting patients, why ask about insurance coverage? She paused, got befuddled, and and I replied, "It sounds to me like you don't want to deal with Medicare. That's fine. Just say it" I thanked her for her response but said, "I've been around a long time and I know when things don't sound right." A said goodbye and hung-up. Dr. Smith came recommended to me and he may be great. I'll never know. What I do know is that his office staff is not honest or forthright with this prospective patient. read more

A very rude Urologist who takes his slow sweet time to answer your calls even if its an emergency. Can't have a normal conversation with him without him raising his voice or being rude and harsh. The people waiting outside heard him the last time I was there and eyed me as I walked out. It was extremely embarrassing. I would rate him 0 stars if it was possible. Dr. Smith has significantly improved my prostate and urinary problems. I've consulted with other urologist who prescribed medicine to help with the urinary problems but really didn't address my prostate. Dr. Smith's Holistic approach to medicine resolved both my problems within a very reasonable amount of time. As of today my prostate PSA dropped from 8 to below 1 and my urinary problems are gone. A week later my kidney pain/spasm is worse. I cannot eat or drink without severe pain and spasm in my left kidney. I have spent more time in ERs to no avail. At this point the doctor's staff is surly and unfriendly - and will not cooperate with my request to have the doctor call me. I had two very painful tests done at the hospital yesterday and had the results sent to 3 doctors. I am hoping that one of the other two docs will read the results and try to help me. I have lost 12 lbs since this ordeal started, cannot stand without dizziness, and have had to take large amounts of pain pills to keep from wanting to die from the pain. I am worse than before I had this surgery. I assume that within a month my kidney and uretor will calm down and i will be OK. No one ever died from renal colic - it just feels like you are dying! However, my overall experience with this urological surgeon has been that he is a bully with anger at his patients, who refuses to answer urgent calls, who insists your pain after suegery is extr-ordinary ( as in, you are over reacting), and who feels his patient's time and preparation for surgery don't matter if he decides he wants to watch a playoff game. Just my2 cents. Shredeny Vashtar ...now over a month since my surgery. When I drink liquids, especially more than a sip at a time, I experience kidney-to-bladder spasms on the side where I had the surgery. I am prone to intermittent flank pain on that side, too. Lucky me, I am having a colonoscopy tomorrow and had to drink a lot of fluids which caused the foot-long spasms. I hope a month from now it will REALLY BE OVER. read more

"Beginning to slowly wean myself from UC Davis Medical Center because of my move 83 miles away. Today needed to see a specialist after my ER trip for kidney stones. From among the drs affiliated with the hosp of my choice, I considered dr's med sch, residency, and internship; called if he's accepting new patients and listened to his video. Went to see dr today and realized one thing that was missing from my research -- bedside manner! How do you find that out? Only thing left is to look for another one if you're going to have a long term relationship, but how do you avoid same mistake?" - from my Facebook page right after my consultation with Dr. S. Saw dr. at his Concord clinic. After my consult I reviewed this dr's video and was surprised that he talked about a dr's bedside manner implying that he had it. I self-referred (he should be appreciative), it was the first time I met him, but when he came in the room he merely said "I'm Dr. Smith" and slumped in a chair to read my ER record. He asked if I am experiencing urinary incontinence and I replied only when I have a severe cough. He said he could insert a " sling" to cure that problem. I thought that would be cool before Obamacare kicks in which might not be approved by the govt health panel. He told me to have a urine sample and an x-ray, then he was gone. I didn't know he was done with me because it was so quick. I requested the front desk if I could have a couple of questions with the dr . I asked him if I should continue with my calcium and Vit C supplements and foods to avoid. He quickly said to discontinue the supplements and gave me a pamphlet that contains food to avoid (which I should have received in the first place). Then he said he had to move on. My questions were short and quick. He never shook my hand at our initial meeting (maybe only done at UCDMC) or asked if I had any questions (maybe only done at UCDMC). The next day he called to tell me that the .4 mm kidney stone had moved down to the abdomen. He also scheduled me to come in for the "sling" operation (aha, that's the reason he took the time to call me). I canceled the appointment. Just could not stand to see this dr. again. You are treated as a number, not a person. read more

My experience was 100% better than the other review. I had a problem that had bothered me for years and finally I'd had enough. I saw Dr. Smith on a Monday, he diagnosed my problem within 15 seconds and told me surgery is needed. All as I expected from my own research but he told me he had a cancellation for the following Wednesday and asked if I'd take it. I did and the surgery at Aspen Surgical center went off smoothly and professionally by nurses and Dr. Smith on time and without complications. Dr. Smiths office was courteous, as was Dr. Smith so I highly recommend his skill and professional abilities. Keep in mind they had two days to get all lab work assembled and presented to Dr. Smith, they had to coordinate my insurance and schedule the surgical team and nobody dropped the ball. read more

One night in early June 2015, I had blood in my urine from an enlarged prostate. Dr, Smith saw me the next day during his lunch hour and scheduled a PVP procedure for 5 days later in the afternoon after what I am sure was a busy day seeing patients. He told me in advance what about what to expect after surgery and he was accurate on every item. He reminds me of my experience growing up with old time doctors who cared about their patients. While up on the latest techniques, he has not let technology take the place of patient care. I would recommend him to anyone in need of urology care. read more
