Originally known as the Soup Kitchen Planning Group, it started serving hot lunches and distributing grocery bags three days a week. Over the years, Boca Helping Hands expanded its mission beyond food assistance by adding programs focused on employment, financial assistance, education, and other essential needs. The organization continued to grow through Hurricane Wilma in 2005 and the Great Recession in 2008, when demand for assistance increased dramatically. Today, Boca Helping Hands provides millions of meals each year and offers programs such as the KidsPack Weekend Meals Program, financial assistance, and workforce development. I recently learned about Boca Helping Hands from a friend. I am between paychecks for a few weeks from my summer job as I transition to back to school. This ended up being a great help to stretch my grocery budget. The food distribution program is primarily staffed by volunteers, and it is easy to register to receive groceries twice a month. You receive a card that can be shown at the drive through pickup. When I visited, many of the volunteers appeared to be local high school students getting volunteer hours. You don't even have to get out of your vehicle. They put the food in your trunk or back seat. Food distribution centers such as Boca Helping Hands often receive surplus food from major retailers and other donors like Publix, Walmart, and Whole Foods. Providing this food to people who can use it has the added benefit of reducing food waste. I received a generous assortment of meat, dairy products, and pantry items, more than enough to prepare several meals throughout the week, along with snacks. This was a great experience. According to Boca Helping Hands, its impact since 2025 includes 57,943 volunteer hours, 3,548,846 total pantry and hot meals, and 288,546 services provided through its programs. Its Workforce Development program has also helped people obtain 54 new jobs. I was happy to learn more about them and their mission today. They are a great example of the good that can be done when a community comes together.

Unfortunately, once we made a sizable donation to the center, communication from the owner completely stopped despite multiple attempts (probably 6-7 outreaches via text/app/emails/in-person reminders) to speak with her from both my husband and I. Although they were moving locations at the same time, there is no excuse to not speak with honesty and integrity to the parents of the children you're serving. As special needs parents, this isn't the first or last time but it stung deeply. If you have a neurotypical kid, perhaps this is the setting for you. But communication leaves a lot to be desired and this place is certainly not for special needs children.

Like many women's clubs in Florida, the Hollywood Women's Club was founded in 1922 during the Florida Land Boom years. In the 1920's women's clubs were formed to give back to the community. They became a way for women to get out of the house and assert their independence. They allowed women to get involved in politics and launched the women's rights movement. The Hollywood Women's Club predated the founding of the city and in 1924 they joined the General Federation of Women's Clubs. The first club members were the wives of officers in the J.W. Young Organization which was the development company building Hollywood. They met in the first clubhouse that was built on land donated by the founder of Hollywood, Joseph W. Young in 1927. Early club projects included donating hundreds of books to the first public library, holding tag sales to pay for health screenings for children, giving migrating farmers assistance with housing and welfare, getting the Miami Telephone Co. to bring the first telephone line to town, and collecting $12,000 during a war bonds drive. Today the club supports literacy programs, funds a youth scholarship, participates in the Hollywood Historical Society, supports the neighborhood crime watch, and provides financial aid to many state charities through the General Federation of Women's Clubs. The original plans for the clubhouse included an ornate Mediterranean Revival style. After the collapse of the land boom due to the Great Depression and several hurricanes the design was scaled back to a more affordable $25,000 Classical Revival style building in 1927. The building was listed as a a local historical landmark in 1985, and added to the National Register of Historic Place in 1995. Between 2012 and 2014 money was raised by the club and added to a grant to prevent the clubhouse from sinking into the sand. Other cosmetic work was also completed on this charming historical building. In 2022 the Hollywood Women's Club celebrated their 100th anniversary. During this time further electrical improvements and upgrades to the kitchen were made. Today the clubhouse is available to be rented for private events. The 1,200 square foot main event room has hardwood floors and a grand piano and can accommodate 60 people. There is also a catering kitchen. Information on how to rent the clubhouse and join and volunteer with this important civic organization can be found on the club website. If there are any upcoming events you can find that information as well. For instance they hold 2 round bingo nights for $10. The next bingo night is May 30th and they serve inexpensive drinks including alcohol and snacks. For over 100 years the women of Hollywood have been coming together to improve their local community as well as the state of Florida. Women's clubs have a legacy of helping their communities and it's nice to see that this one is still going strong today.

If you're sitting at the register, you should at least be aware of customers coming in and out and be ready to assist them. His name was Eddie, although he had covered his last name with a white sticker. I will say that the store itself looked very nice, but unfortunately, the customer service I experienced left a very bad impression.
