Typical diner food but I've definitely had better... omelet was pretty bad. Veggies inside we're almost raw. Potatoes tasted like grease/oil. Endless coffee was the best part. I think if you go here, get their pancakes or something similar. Those seemed to look/taste a whole lot better read more

This place is horrible. The food is bland, the interior is dingy, the waitress was rude and slow. She took forever to even acknowledge us by bringing us water then another eternity to take our order and never once asked us how we liked our food. We then overheard our waitress tell another customer, who asked if he could get the egg salad sandwich he normally gets during the week (it was a weekend) "Well, it ain't a weekday." The only reason I'm giving this place two stars is for the younger waitress who quickly tried to correct the situation by asking the chef, who was more than happy to make the regular customer his egg salad. read more

They get one star for ONE last good server they have. Had gone once before maybe a year or so ago, super bad service! Being a server for 12+ years (granted it was fine dining or higher end dining), it's one of the things that sticks out for me. You sit where you want, takes the server a while to get there, and immediately, "what can I get you?" No Hi, good morning, can I start you off with some coffee. So we order our drinks and ask for more time to look at the menu. Server comes back, "Ready to order?" Ok, I guess.....food came out pretty fast. It was pretty good, but my coffee was gone before my first bite. Our server just kept walking past, didn't even come around to check how everything was or if we needed anything, like COFFEE! She went by a few more times and I finally spotted a server that had a coffee pot in her hand the entire time for her tables, had to ask her for the refill before I choke on my omelette! We vowed never to come back but gave it another shot. Few months ago, we went again, kind of nervous. Sat down and we got the most miserable looking server in the world, the kind that's been waiting tables since birth, when they would take your order with a cig on the side of their mouth. Very short and not nice at all. Gave me a look when I ordered the not so pricey french toast, she says "is that it?" Once again, coffee never refilled. Mrs Sunshine herself walks over with our food and she has about 8 plates all stacked up on one arm! I'm looking to see where mine is and surely, directly under another plate. The second she puts it down I ask her for another order of french toast that wasn't resting under another plate. She argued with me about it being under one of her fingers so it didn't really touch, I lifted my plate to show the melted cheese from my son's omelette stuck right under. I was appalled! But once again, dirty looks. I really was iffy about eating my new order, but it was prepared fresh, I didn't take my eyes off the cook the whole time, but she made sure to go whisper to everyone else what I had done. That other nice server that actually does her job refilled our coffee without having to ask. When did breakfast/brunch turn into a huge ordeal?Basic etiquette is none existent here and sanitary rules set up for restaurants obviously not followed and need to be readdressed. It's too bad that a place that is so convenient and has good food, there really isn't alot of ways to ruin breakfast, can have such bad people working there. I wonder if Andy is aware of his staff and their practices. Whatever happened to coffee refills? They're free refills, but yet they don't do it. read more

Good stand up kind of place. I go there mostly for breakfast. Usual suspects--eggs, home fries, sausage, toast, coffee. Served up fast with no attitude. Normal neighborhood clientele and staff. Harvard and Tufts students haven't found the place, so you don't have to listen to Daddy's dearest talking about previous and upcoming travel plans. read more

The homefries are barely cooked, the waitstaff is not friendly and the food DOES have a weird flavor. If it's the weekend, it's worth paying a little more and hitting up the Irish breakfast at Spirit, just a few doors down. They don't open til later though, but at least you can get a bloody mary. I grew up in the northeast but now work in DC, and desperately miss good old-school diners. I have a client across the street from Andy's, and this is my first stop every time I am up at the client's offices in Cambridge. Both breakfast and lunch are excellent and cheap, with great service to go along with it. I've noticed that virtually everyone who eats here knows the servers' names, and vice-versa - a rare thing these days. Andy's is a simple place that is good at what it does - and is well worth a visit. read more

I'm glad I went here just so I know never, ever to go back! The food and coffee were so, so bland. It wasn't even diner-bad, which can be greasy and delicious, it was just bland-bad. Also, they wouldn't switch out the meat for potatoes (which is cheaper than meat) in my partner's combo-meal order, and made him order each piece separately, which ended up being stupidly expensive. I will honestly derive glee from telling people what a crappy place this is!!! It's too bad Porter doesn't have a good breakfast place. Andy's is the sort of place you root for, because they seem to have a good heart, but they haven't looked at the calendar in 50 years and I don't think they know we're in the next century. Everything seems dated and dreary, from the food to the furnishings. I feel as if the waitresses are moonlighting from the sewing shop. In a way, they fail the basic test of an eating establishment: can they do better than I can at home? This could mean either better food and/or cheap enough price that I shouldn't bother cooking myself. Andy's has neither. But they have such a good location, which is the only reason I think they are hanging on. They really need a change of management and a fresh wind of excitement. Before coming here I was warned about the poor service so I was prepared ahead of time, but it was a convenient location for breakfast food. It's a typical seat yourself diner with a pretty standard breakfast menu. No complaints about the food, I got scrambled eggs with hash browns, toast and bacon. The service was the bad part because it took a while for someone to take our order and for the food to come. Then we asked to order off the lunch menu for a to go order and were informed lunch started at 12. Then at 12, we went to place an order and they informed us they couldn't start lunch until all the breakfast orders were complete. They were nice about it, but it just seemed like a bad system. Overall, does the trick for a simple breakfast, but service is not great. read more

Everything I've had there has been scratch made, the soups, roasted turkey, that is they roast the turkeys for the Turkey club...delicious. Had some cabbage/chorizo soup...delicious. My son who hits all the 'fab' burger joints, Shake Shake, Boston Burger, Tasty Burger said the burger here was 'awesome'. He had his with american, sauteed onion, lettuce, tomato, came with Steak Fries, so they have different fries depending on the meal...what? well all right. I did not ask if they made shakes or pies, 2 big ingredients for my diner fix, but honestly everything is good, whoever is cooking is skilled and cares about what they are putting out there, straight forward nice waitresses. The waitress took the order - an omelette plus a coffee - but never brought the cup before bringing the check which of course had charged the coffee. The waitress said not a word upon hearing my complaint, and brought another check with coffee crossed out, but the total remained incorrect, and of course erred on the overcharge side. Throughout my entire stay at this diner the waitress did not greet me, attend to my inquiry about the missing coffee, or apologize for the mistake, except asking what I am going to eat. This is the 2nd time I've been here, and I went back only because it is my boyfriend's neighborhood joint. I was unimpressed the first time, but was more like, "whatever" about it. No biggie. But this time I was REALLY unimpressed. The French Toast was made with basically Wonder bread (I was hoping for Texas Toast), and my omelette was made with slices of American cheese and canned mushrooms. The hash browns seemed boiled and not fried (the potatoes were still white and didn't look like they had touched the grill AT ALL). Sure, the prices are cheap, but they must use cheap ingredients because they have such a high payroll--I mean, 2 busboys in a small restaurant is TOTALLY necessary, right? 2 waitresses on the 8-seat counter, and I could actually see 4 cooks just standing around in the kitchen, then coming out to stand around and chat with all the other staff just standing around. I was there on a Saturday at 9:30 (it wasn't busy) and they close at 2. How busy could it get that they need all that extra staff? I will admit I'm biased after living in New Jersey for years and experiencing many a diner, but my expectiations were seriously crushed at Andy's. You would think that a diner next door to the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts would be good, but alas.... Took some friends visiting Boston for the first time and thought we would try out what I had been told was a beloved neighborhood joint for a LONG time. What a disappointment. The coffee was cold and flavorless, and the food was mediocre at best. The service was friendly when it got to us, but we had to get up twice to get condiments for ourselves which were not at our table. It was busy when we went, but I have been in busier places where we did not have to wait so long before someone finally came to take our order. The last straw was the state of the bathrooms. Sheesh. Sorry, but I am not going back. I think I would do as well at the nearest Mickey Ds. It's not expensive, but it's not cheap either. read more

Firstly, this is my first yelp review. Our experience at Andy's Diner was so deplorable that I was spurred to sign up and try to spare my fellow brunch gastronomes the horrendous food of Andy's. My girlfriend and I decided to try this local establishment, as we were hoping for good diner food. What we received was anything but. We both ordered eggs (I over easy, she over medium) with homefries, bacon and toast. The eggs were rubbery and not cooked to order, not to mention the tasty hair found in one. Furthermore, the eggs had an unsettling alien quality to them, and I regret eating both of them. The potatoes were indescribably slimy and bland; I for the life of me could not figure out how they prepared them so terribly, and my girlfriend and I each had only one bite. The toast was drowning in butter. The bacon was translucent, paper thin, and overly salty. I had to wait an unreasonably long time to have my meager coffee cup refilled (despite numerous servers passing the table and the coffee pot literally being within my arms reach). When we went to pay, the woman at the register did not even say one word to me. Overall, the staff look unenthusiastic and their mood seemed to mirror the drab overhead fluorescent lighting. My girlfriend and I both agree that our breakfast experience at Andy's was THE WORST BREAKFAST WE HAVE EVER HAD IN OUR ENTIRE LIVES. We then tried to think if this bold statement was actually true, and unfortunately there is no hyperbole in our assesment. Even the complimentary breakfasts one receives at cheep motels is better than Andy's. If I could, I would puke up my breakfast from Andy's and begin my Sunday morning again. read more

After a long drive home from New Hampshire ...I decided to stop at Andy's for some breakfast. Ordered the Lumber Jack Special... everything was top notch!!! The food, the service, and the atmosphere were perfect for what I needed. It wasn't too busy and I had a chance to chat with one of the wait staff who I grew up across the street from in Cambridge ( Hi Carol)! While the food is on the cheap end (plus), the crowd and the space exude that nice diner kitsch (also plus), the food is bland (not so plus). Better diner food has been found, and can be, rather easily. Additionally, the service is pretty rude (that may be a plus or not, depending on how you take your old-school diners). Sure, it's not the best breakfast you can get in Cambridge, but it's relatively cheap and you NEVER have to wait in line -- even on the weekends. A very bad experience at Andy's. The food was OK, but on the cold and bland side, and on the expensive side for being cold and bland. After we ate, I went to the register to pay the check. Our waitress rang up my credit card and handed me the slip, together with what looked like a pen. As I was writing in a rather generous 20% tip, I realized that she had given me a mechanical pencil. "I'm sorry ma'am, I think this is a pencil." "No, that's a pen," she said. "Actually, I'm pretty sure it's a pencil," I said as I advanced the lead out an inch for her to see. "Some pens do that. It's a pen," she said. "Ma'am, may I please have a pen?" "That's a pen. My boss said it's a pen." I noticed the eraser on the end of the pencil, so I squiggled a line of a piece of paper and erased it. "I don't give a damn what your boss said, I'm not going to fill out my credit card slip with a pencil." "Don't swear at me!" She tossed a pen at me. I signed the slip without a tip. First time in my life I've not given a tip. I asked to speak with the manager. He was nice; he apologized; he even offered me a pen. But we left with a very bad taste in our mouths. read more
