It took a lot for me to take the first step to finding a counselor to help me. I walked in, excited for my appointment, and met her, and she did not seem eager to help at all. If anything, I was an inconvenience. She did an assessment of me, asking about family history--something normal and expected for a first visit. I explained my anxiety about the stressors and overwhelming responsibilities of school and my first year of college. She began to warm up to me as the appointment went on, and I thought maybe my first impression of her was wrong, and it would be a good fit. At the end of the session, she handed me some homework to do before our meeting the next week, explained what I had to do to complete it, and then in a very demeaning way told me: "So, here's your homework. Don't spaz out." In short, this was not the right thing to tell someone with an anxiety disorder. I cancelled the three other appointments we set up and will not be returning. Those working administration were very helpful, and when I went to cancel my appointments, they offered to set an appointment for me with another counselor that might fit better. I was grateful for their concern, and they told me to let me know if there was anything they could do to help. However, I don't think I will be returning to Heartland Counseling Center.

However, Eric, the Co-director, put us in touch with Bev and she came in on her day off to accommodate our schedule to do some craniosacral therapy. Eric even contacted me to be sure that appointment was going to work. All more than I would have expected! We arrived and just upon entering, felt the tensions beginning to leave. The atmosphere is so supportive! We also decided to take an infrared sauna and "whole body vibration therapy", which I had never tried. I highly recommend both! The only drawback is that it's often difficult to speak with someone directly when I call, leading to leaving a message or using the portal. Don't use these people. On a day when the roads were bad with ice and snow for my first…read moreappointment, they didn't even wait 10 minutes for me! The park lot was confusing, they gave me the wrong room number, the door to the building was locked. PLUS, I couldn't call them either to ask them how to get in or where they even were (it went straight to the answering machine). Didn't even call me to ask if something happened. Tells me how compassionate they actually are. People come here for mental problems, and they don't even treat you with decency of waiting for a few more minutes on a bad road day. What an ordeal.
