5 Stars are not enough for all I have to say about Angels Camp Veterinary Hospital. Are there 10 Stars? From the very beginning--I mean, from my first phone call to actually get my appointment, I knew I was going to take my dog to a special place. First of all, they were booked, which is a very good sign. Then, all of the questions pertaining to my dog's symptoms, just to make sure there was nothing that adamant that had to see the doctor on that day. Truthfully, there was nothing life-threatening--not even close. Being the baby that I can be when it comes to my dog, I told the receptionist, "She is so old. I just want her to be comfortable." Of course, I was crying, but that is not the point. The receptionist juggled other patients around, and made room for the doctor to see my dog. Dr. Sophie was extremely thorough in treating my dog. Actually, she did a complete examination of ears, eyes, throat, and entire body, which addressed so much more than the symptoms I was concerned. She explained the treatment, and was aggressive enough to do different approaches, to make sure my dog, Pepsi, would benefit the most. Dr. Sophie also gave me the news that Pepsi had cancer. As I sobbed, her aide continuously gave me Kleenex. Dr. Sophie laid out all the alternatives, the likely results, and the "real" prognosis relating to Pepsi's quality of life. Together we made the decision in Pepsi's best interest. Once again I was with the receptionists. Man, I cannot think of any time in my life that I had so many individuals truly concerned about me, or concerned about my dog. I cannot speak highly enough about Monica or Tina. The warmth, care, and empathy from the front-end staff makes the vet visit so much more a positive experience, even though it concerns a most horrible time for our pets. So Sorry, I have to give such a Poor Review. We have taken our pets to Angels Camp Veterinary Hospital ACVH For Years!! And They, Were, a place I'd recommend. But No longer. I took my Pug in for a "Bordetella vaccine", the tech came out to the car, got my Pug and put a leash around Her neck, Pugs have delicate, short, trachs and if My Pug darted away from the tech would've put undue strain on an already delicate trach. I had to ask her to NOT Put a leash around my Pugs neck. AND, My Pug went in for a "Bordetella" vaccine, BUT, Received Also a "Flu" vaccine, that I had made an appt for 2 weeks, for, AFTER, the Bordetella vaccine. Last Year she received, both, Bordetella And Flu together. And in October we boarded our Pug and 2 days after she got home was so sick, A Horrible Cough, which turned out to be Bordetella, or Kennel cough. ‍ so, after she was properly diagnosed by AirVet, and Her reg Vet started her on Antibiotics she was better within 3 days... so, that is WHY I Did NOT want to have both vaccines together, I felt the Flu vaccine may have comprised the Bordetella vaccine. But, they gave her BOTH , together today. Because I said to the tech, "She only needs 2 vaccines to be up to date" but, on the Appt schedule it said "Bordetella" and in 2 weeks she has an appt for the "Flu" .... so , sorry to say Unless they can get back to the integrity They HAD ... Where to start? Unfortunately we had to bring our 16 year old basset here to be sent to Rainbow Bridge. The Vet, Vet tech and everyone else could not have been kinder. Especially Dr. Tom He is very caring and considerate when your pet is sick or recovering from surgery or injury. He kept the door of communication open when my cat was injured and checked in with me frequently. I love the app they use! You can communicate with your doctor, and they get back to right away! You can set up appointments, cancel, reschedule, Etc. Airvet is one of the best apps I've used. It's very user friendly. Their staff is great. Very friendly and caring, as are the Vets themselves. Unfortunately, my friend's dog had an accident while we were at her lake house. We frantically tried to call the first vet to pop up on yelp. They open at 9am and picked up the phone exactly at 9am which was AMAZING and they were so sweet. We explained what happened and they told us to bring her in immediately, without hestitation. When we pulled up they were already waiting for us to take a look at the injuries. The dog needed surgery and ended up having to stay there for observation. Our dog got a fox tail in his paw which became infected. We were out here on vacation not knowing the local vets. Dr Mike and the staff at Angels Camp Veterinary are the absolute BEST. We have 12 Year old Calico cat who had a seizure due to a glandular condition. We got her to ACV and that took her in and stabilized and treated her immediately. We couldn't be happier with this Veterinary Hospital. Last Monday my dog was hit by a car, so I rushed him to the Angels Camp Vet Hospital. Upon arriving they checked my dogs' vitals and refused to do any work on my baby boy until we paid $1,000 upfront, then left me in the examination room crying with my dog who was bleeding and shitting himself. During this time, I could overhear the technicians through the door laughing and gossiping while occasionally popping their heads in only to ask if I had figured out the financials yet. After an hour we finally were able to get the money together and they decided to help us. I met with the vet, Doctor Michael, who was amazing, helpful and walked me through everything he was doing. They were going to keep him overnight and he told me I could call anytime to check up on him. The next morning, I called to see if Opie made it through the night and the receptionist wouldn't tell me anything. Thankfully not much later I got a call from the doctor and he let me know how Opie was doing. He had a broken leg and a fractured pelvis, so he was going to spend a few days in the vet, but he was alive! During this time, I paid a few hundred dollars on his vet bill here and there and after paying $1,600, I asked the receptionist when I could take him home. She told me I couldn't take him home until everything was paid in full. I asked her how much more is left on the bill and she said I had another $1,300 and it would continue to grow everyday he was here. I told her I was coming down to speak with the vet to try and work something out. She told me that it wouldn't be necessary and won't help the situation. After I got down there, we found out she had been giving me incorrect information and I had more than enough money paid on his bill. Doctor Michael said Opie's leg was too swollen to put a cast on, but to make another appointment for Friday and one of the vet techs would put one on him. When I checked in on Friday with the receptionist she told me they were talking about just putting another splint on him because a cast would take a long time. I told her what the vet told me and all she said back was, "oh well I don't know then." When the vet tech came to take Opie to the back she asked if he could walk, I said it really hurts him. He has written directions from the vet not to let him walk on hard surfaces, but she proceeded to grab his leash and started trying to make him walk, at which point he falls and yelps because HIS LEG IS BROKEN AND HIS PELVIS IS FRACTURED. With no help, I picked him up and carried him into the back room and placed him in the hard metal crate. I asked if there was a pad we could lay down and she told me he would be fine. I left him there and went to work. While at work they called me and asked me for more money, so I paid them with my card. I had my bf pick him up and it was only after I got home that I realized he did not have a cast on, just had another splint. Next day he managed to slip right out of the splint they put on him. I called their emergency line because they are closed on the weekend and whoever was working told me to just leave him in his crate and he would be fine. All night my dog was yelping in pain. morning comes' and I call the vet again. They said I had to pay a 150$ fee over the phone. I told them no and to have the vet call me. A vet tech later calls and tells me she will rewrap it. So, we load up Opie, who is in pain and 70 lbs with a broken leg into the car. We get to the vet and the same technician that I spoke with on the phone told me that I had to wrap it at home. I asked her why she didn't tell me that over the phone before I tortured my dog by bringing him down there and she told me they were too busy. Aren't these people supposed to be sympathetic to animals? Isn't this why they got into this business? My boyfriend wrapped my dogs' leg better than they did at the vet and it cost us 13$. I'd pay anything for my dog to be ok and taken care of and I'm happy he's alive, but I will never be going back to that vet. TL;DR: 0/10 would not recommend. Avoid at all cost. read more

I called this am to see about taking my puppy in who had just swallowed multiple medications. Told whoever answered, that we were located in Arnold (already a 30 min drive) to their EMERGENCY vet location. She asked "Are you already a client here?" (No, we are from out of town, but isn't this an ER clinic?") She replied "we are not taking any new clients" and suggested I try "the vet in Jackson" but that's a long drive, and she just swallowed the medication. She wanted me to drive another hour, despite my dog is in danger!? And they call themselves an ER clinic!!? They should get their license taken away!!! What UNETHICAL and horrible care. I hope you never have to go here because they are the type to push your emergent pup to a further off location--pitiful excuse for a vet. I called at 8:30 am on May 30, 2020. read more

Terrible emotional experience for me and our dog. I will never go back to this place again. A veterinarian should know a little about when a dog is ran over. Their organs can swell. To suggest wrapping a dog with some experimental wrap and not thinking about the dog's internal organs being bound up after being ran over is beyond my comprehension. Of course I was to emotional to know better and just wanted our little girl fixed. I should have taken her somewhere else when they suggested it, but I thought she would do okay for observation and then the terrible idea was presented to me. She suffered very badly. I have only now been able to write about it. It has been 3 years and we miss her still so very much. read more

Our dog Smokey was recently hit by a truck near our cabin in Calaveras County. We were immediately ushered into an examining room and met there by the attending physician. Dr. Leslie gave Smokey an injection for pain, and began to assess his injuries. His treatment in this emergency couldn't have been more professional. Dr. Leslie's care and concern was greatly appreciated by us in this very stressful situation. She determined that Smokey probably had some disk damage, and needed to be treated by a Neurologist. Dr. Leslie contacted a number of clinics closer to our home in the Bay Area to make sure they had one available to see him on a Saturday. She came in on her day off(newborn baby in tow) to check on him personally before he was discharged. Her diagnosis was correct, and verified by the Neurologist. We're so thankful for the wonderful treatment our dog received. We highly recommend this facility. By the way Smokey is now home, and progressing well with his recovery... read more

My big guy Marrow had a perennial hernia, which was diagnosed in San Jose. I did not have the money to afford a surgery at the time (about a month), and in the meantime had moved up here to Bear Valley. I asked around who the best hospital was, and everyone I talked to up here said to go to ACVH. Yea, I might pay a little more than some clinics, but every person who has had serious injuries with their pets took them here. My friend Chris's dog got ran over, and Dr. Leslie did an emergency surgery late at night, no problem. They also went through a rough time with another friend Kathy. Nonetheless, when I came in with my dog, they did everything and more to ease my fears, explain to me what was wrong, and how they were going to fix it. Dr. Michael went over the two possibilities of fixing the hernia, and also gave me his experiences with it, being as my dog was unfixed. Overall, they were all amazing people and truly seem to care about the animals they are looking after. Not only that, but they care about the owners of these animals. When I told them that I could not afford the entire surgery out-right, they worked with me on it, to make it work for everyone. They really want to help. In the end, my dog is happy, I am happy, and hopefully everyone else will be happy with their services. read more

We are new to the area. My dog who has traveled all over North and South America with no issues, developed a pretty severe allergic reaction HERE. Rats. Called all the local clinics to get the quickest appointment I could. This hospital not only made an effort to get me in quickly but also came off as friendly and concerned. On the day of my appointment: The front office was very busy yet friendly and efficient. We were seen very promptly. The Doctor quickly put me at ease. He quickly recognized the issue. He detailed a number of treatment options from very low cost, to pretty involved and expensive and thoroughly explained the pros and cons of each. The treatment plan I chose involved a bit of work on my part. I was taken back to the surgery where we practiced with my dog the tasks I had to perform and was thoroughly trained on dosing my dog with his various medications. When I was ready to depart, all medications, instructions for using same, and my billing statement were ready very promptly. I found the bill to be very reasonable. The hospital has followed up twice by phone to be sure that my dog was responding well to treatment (he was). Gotta say, I'm impressed. This will be my regular clinic as long as I live here. What can I say about Angels Camp Vet other than all positives! First off I want to say If you live in Calaveras County and are in need of a reliable and knowledgable vet, look no farther than Angels Camp Vet! I absolutely love the care this facility gives. They make sure to always have a DR on call 24/7 because they too understand that just like adults need an emergency room, animals also need the same reliable care during unreasonable hours of the night! A couple years back my Papillon Dodger had jumped from a short height and landed on his front leg wrong, long story short it was 5am and I had my dog with a break completely through the bone. Frantically, while holding my screaming dog, calling every vet I could find, all I would keep getting is voicemail after voicemail claiming to leave a message and we'll call you back during business hours. That didn't work for me... Dialing Angels Camp Vet's number to my surprise I was put in contact with a live vet technician at their site that advised me they would call one of their DR's in early and to bring him in at that very moment. So down we went and they opened their doors to us at 5:30am that day. Dr Ellen and Dr Mike did an amazing job with him. They went through treatment and xrays as thorough as possible. I left him there just to pick him up the next day in a cast with a metal plate surgically installed bonding the break together. Again long story short, Dodger is now again living a happy life with all 4 legs functioning like before and the people we have to thank for that is the totally AMAZING staff at Angels Camp Vet! read more

We contacted Angels Camp Vet last Sunday (Oct 6th) in the evening after we discovered one of our beloved hens had a very bad case of flystrike that we didn't find earlier. We knew it was too late to save her but we couldn't put her down ourselves, and we couldn't let her go all night suffering. I called their answering service and then they got back to me within about 5 minutes. Dr. Mike and Tabby (forgive me if that is the wrong name) met us at the hospital, this was all within maybe 30-45 minutes. They were incredibly understanding and supportive. My husband and I had just lost our dog unexpectedly the week before and we were complete messes, and they were just amazing to us and to our hen Coco. Yesterday I got a handwritten note from Dr. Mike with his condolences and assuring me that I did the right thing and it wasn't my fault. A whole note from the doctor himself, and for a chicken! What a great after hours staff! My 17 yr.old pug was at the end. fortunately my neighbor Sara was able to go with me. she works there as well. She had barely got home from work and was more than willing to go back with me. this was dog she has watched for years. A week ago our Isabell went running up the street at our cabin late Friday night. She came back with a quarter size chunk of skin missing. My husband called and got an emergency appointment Saturday afternoon. They took her in and stitched her up and sent them on their way with meds. Later that day we received a call from their office checking in on her to make sure everything was going well. The person on the phone could not have been any nicer or more professional. We are on vacation in the area and our dog hurt his leg. Being a weekend they were closed but fortunately the doctor Sophie and the staff working that day were able to see him and fix him right up. The doctor answered all the questions and they were able to squeeze him in and look all over and give us medicine and further instructions. You can complain about the additional cost because it was an emergency visit but to us it was well worth it. If I lived in the area I would seek them out again. read more

The Vet Techs were horrible to our dog. We took him in to have his nails trimmed. The female Tech just grabbed him out of my arms and when they took him in the back area I heard him yelping and barking. When they brought him out the tech said that he was trying to bite them; which was odd for his personality. We paid but when we got home we noticed that all of his nails were cut WAY TOO SHORT AND THEY WERE BLEEDING! THEY WERE HURTING HIM AND THATS WHY HE WAS TRYING TO BITE! We later found out that one of the male techs was arrested later on for animal cruelty to one of his OWN ANIMALS! DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET THERE THEY DO NOT PERFORM PROPER BACKGROUND CHECKS ON THEIR TECHS! read more

Recently we had an emergency with our cat, Tony. Dr. Mike gave us great advice on the phone and then met us at the hospital at 1:30 in the morning for emergency treatment. Throughout our cats treatment everyone in the office was professional and very caring. Dr. Mike made himself available to us for questions and all options were explored with the pros and cons discussed. We felt that the entire staff was caring and we received the absolute best care possible. My little Yorkie Juju was attacked by a dog 10 times her size Saturday. I called every Vet within an hour from our location and no one was accepting emergencies. I reached the wonderful staff at Angels camp Vet hospital. They also were swamped with emergencies but fit us in 35 minutes after we arrived. After a quick exam and X-rays Dr. Jessica gave us the bad news. Juju needed extensive surgery to repair all the damage from her dog bites. We feared the worse and hoped for the best. After surgery I got a call from Dr. Jessica that she made it through surgery. She certainly was not out of the woods. Over the next few days during the holiday weekend the Dr. And staff were kind enough to let me visit my fur baby every day. This was really special given the holiday weekend. With each visit the Dr. updated me on Juju's progress. She was not responding, not eating. On day 3 Dr.Jessica agreed to let me take her home hoping that would help her improve. Unfortunately her first day home did not help. No improvement. We continued to force feed her and give her 100% of our love and attention. Everyday twice a day I got a call from Dr. Jessica checking on Juju's progress. She even called us on her day off! On day 5 our baby starting walking and drinking water. Today day 6 she started eating on her own. We own a home at Lake Tulloch and one in the Bay Area. Our dogs have always been treated at our Bay Area Vet. After our wonderful experience we will only bring our dogs to Dr. Jessica. She not only treats your pet she also treated us. Interesting that most of the reviews are from out of town accidents or emergencies! This review is from an Angels Camp resident. We took our cat Jake here for his annual examination in 2016. We saw Dr. Lauren. Jake is diabetic and we asked for a blood sugar check This has been done quarterly in Reno and then Clearwater over five years. Each time vets and staff were very helpful. Here he came out from the rear, (we were not allowed in the back) with a foreleg bleeding where he had been shaved. After a boarding once, he was sickly for a few days after we got him home. Told on the phone cannot have been anything at the facility!! In September this year we took him in for his 2017 examination. DVM who we have never met before started by telling us he had a small head in comparison to his body because of a common tumor in his skull. My wife burst into tears as the DVM then went on to tell her it could be removed for about $20,000 in Los Angeles! Jake is a large black male (not fat) and 14 years old. We asked again for the blood sugar check and this time have no idea where the blood draw was taken. We were told in the early days here not to use this vet. Why are you not allowed to inspect the boarding facility. Every where else does. Why are all exams done in secret? Every other vet gives a thorough physical in our presence. read more

First, the good news: the veterinary skill itself seems to be fine. Now, the bad news: The staff at the phones and the desk are not very helpful nor knowledgeable. Consistently and repeatedly they gave us incorrect information about the process of getting our cat attended to, and the procedures that would be done to our cat. They promised to call when we could pick up the cat, but never did. Our cat is feral. We got a voucher from the Humane Society in San Andreas, to help defray the cost of work at the vet hospital. The Humane Society agent marked the cat as male... but being an as-yet-uncaptured feral cat, we of course didn't know the cat's gender...but the agent assured us that the vet hospital would determine the gender, and give us the appropriate credit, which is different for males and females. Outrageously, once they determined that our cat is female, they insisted on giving us only the credit for a male cat. I've contacted the Human Society, and they concur that this is outrageous. And as a special anti-bonus, this vet hospital seems to be the most expensive pet-service facility in the county. All the more reason to avoid it when possible. read more
