Took our cat to two different vets to solve an eye irritation. The second vet said that if their treatment did not work, we would have to see an ophthalmologist. This lead us to Animal Eye Center of NJ who was able to solve our cat's eye issue that other vets couldn't. read more

Dr Holmberg is the absolute sweetest man ever and he and his staff always make you feel important and never rusher

First, I will say Dr. Holmberg is awesome!!! He knows his stuff, answers all your questions and is very personable & kind. He did a great job on eradicating an aggressive corneal infection and restored most of the vision for my 18 1/2 year old diabetic cat. His vet techs are also very competent, kind & gentle. Now to his admin staff. My cat passed on 5/19 (unrelated to the eye). I email their office 5/20 advising them to cancel the upcoming appointment due to kitty's passing and asked if the unopened/sealed medication could be returned for a refund. When I did not receive a response, I used their online portal to send them the above message. No answer. On 5/24, I received their email appointment reminder so I guess they didn't read my email or portal messages. On 5/24 I called them and the person who answered the phone took down my information and stated she would ask her manager and get back to me. Today, 5/25, I called again - the same person answered, put me on hold so she could speak to the manager. She returned 4 minutes later to say the $170 medication could not be returned. Ok, fine but no sentiment or compassion whatsoever regarding the passing of my cat. Truly apathetic. read more

I'll start with the good: receptionist, tech, and vet were nice. We just had our INITIAL referral/consultation for an eyelid mass in my senior boston with Dr. Holmberg. My dog doesn't travel well, so I thought we'd try Animal Eye Center (30 minutes closer than other ophtho) as reccomended by our primary vet. Big mistake. My dog did not recieve a proper comprehensive initial eye examination and yet they charged a full $295 consult fee. I'm a human doctor, not a vet ... I don't doubt the vets knowledge or experience, but ROUTINE tests were skipped: - They didn't measure her pressures for glaucoma. - They didn't do a Schirmer test for dry-eye - They didn't stain the cornea - THEY DIDNT DILATE HER PUPILS! (to do a fundic exam) - No Slit-lamp testing - No basics like testing for menace response, tracking, or even turn down the lights to check for pupillary reflex! The entire "visit" was performed in a BRIGHT ROOM. Ridiculous. When making the appointment over the phone I was told by Karen, "The visit will include a comprehensive eye exam, including: Tear Test, Pressure Test and Staining" Their OWN WEBSITE states: Initial diagnostic tests including a Schirmer tear test, applanation tonometry, and vital staining will be completed. After presenting the case to one our board certified ophthalmologists, the ophthalmologist will then perform a complete exam. The exam will include vision testing, slit lamp examination (biomicroscopy), and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Yes, the referral was for an eyelid mass- but a basic fundamental eye evaluation was not performed. I did question both the receptionist Karen and vet tech Kristine about why a comprehensive exam wasn't performed- they both answered "it's at the doctors discretion." Ludicrous, any ophthalmologist with a new patient would perform these basics as part of the initial eye exam. This was a BASELINE exam. And she is a SENIOR BOSTON TERRIER (a breed infamous for eye problems/disease). Again, I'm sure Dr. H is very knowledgable and has lots of experience, but this was NOT a "comprehensive eye exam". Perhaps the general pubic may not be savvy in this regard- but any medical or veterinary professional can tell you this is not the standard of care. As a pet parent, I'm not reassured about her eye health after our appointment with Dr. Holmberg. For your dog's health/vision, save your time and money- and GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. Red Bank and Garden State both have excellent (and thorough) optho services. We should have stuck to them. read more

Dr. Holmberg & staff are wonderful! Recently got cataracts done on my little one and the care we have received has been great! April one of his staff nurses is absolutely wonderful. She takes her time to explain everything & answer all questions & concerns... kind and gentle person who made everything less scary. Dr. Holmberg was excellent. He went to great pains to explain Pepper's eye issues to us. All possible options were explored and how to support Pepper while we make a decision. He is extremely knowledgeable and takes his time to ensure you fully understand and are comfortable with the information provided. Long, long wait times. I'm talking 45 minutes to one hour. Before you were allowed in the reception area you sat in your car in boiling hot weather or freezing in the winter. The longest I sat was one hour and 20 minutes until I went in and said I would reschedule and then they saw me. Double booking is standard and the last visit was triple booking (the receptionist told me). Dr. Holmberg is a good doctor but very expensive. You always pay a minimum of $195 to walk in the door even for a follow-up. Prescriptions are super high and charge $10 to ship meds and it takes at least one week to receive. Emails are rarely returned and forget to leave a message on the phone. read more

I wish you would allow 1 person in with their pet. My Milo is blind and he gets EXTREMELY NERVOUS when he is with new people. I would also like to know if there is a payment plan for Milo's visits. Just wanted to share that and see if it's possible. Super nice to Milo and tried comforting him. Answered all of my questions. read more

Dr. Holmberg diagnosed and treated our dog when he went blind overnight. At a very scary time for our family, he handled the situation very professionally and with warmth and great care. He is friendly, thorough, clear in his explanations and always happy to answer questions. Dr Holmberg diagnosed, treated and has maintained my dogs eye health for the past 3 years. Dr Holmberg is amazing. Wish I could find a human doctor half as good. So my boy needed bilateral cataract surgery. Dr Holmberg did the necessary exams, sat down with me, and explained, clearly and in great detail, what he would do and what to expect. So now it's only 48 hours since the surgery. My boy's eyes are looking clearer and much better, progress is rapid since the surgery, and he can already see very well. They ran enough tests to find out what was "not" wrong with my dog . By this , I mean that the tests they ran were enough to rule out an eye defect but now they have referred me to a neurologist. I guess I wish I could have gotten better and more solid answers out of this visit . I now know what is not wrong with my dog's eye, now I need to go to another specialist to find out was is wrong . I guess as a patient you always hope that the specialist you are seeing can provide you with the answers that end the ongoing questioning about your dog's health. This visit did not provide me with that . Aside from this frustration, Dr. Holmberg was very sweet to my dog . He was thorough while also being gentle with my dog . He is also very patient. When my dog was hiding under the exam table, Dr. Holmberg actually got down on the floor to administer the eye drops . It's so nice to experience a vet who still seems to enjoy working with the animals . I am glad he treated my dog . He put my dog at ease just with his kind demeanor. In October I call them for an Appt. from my Vet. Had to wait until 1/2/2018 for Appt. Got there on time, had to wait an hour before being seen by a doctor. During the 10 min. talk with the doctor, which was not Dr, Brown whom I thought I made and Appt with. was given an estimate for Cherry eye replacement of $2,300. Very upset my dog was a rescue and was told that they performed the previous Cherry eye surgery, they could not find any records. Then was told I had to pay $300 for this Appt. I was outraged, as nothing was done. As a senior I can't afford $2300 and was not aware of $300 Appt. fee. which I would never never agree to. This is VERY expensive. $300 for a 10 min consultation - ridiculous. Felt like I was robbed also. They need to make me aware of their fees when I first made the appt. So upset that Animal center does this and think they can get away with outrageous fees! read more
