I just want to say that NO, just because a person likes anime or is asian does not mean they have an excuse to be "cold" are "rude" to you- regardless if they are "shy". That's just a stereo type as well. So, I think what Ada C. said in the first place is wrong. Sorry, but no excuses. If you go into a store to buy something and you are the customer, the costumer service should treat you like a customer. They should try to help people who are not that well-acquainted with some of the merchandise they sell. Listen, I'm a huge anime fan and my hobby is collecting figures. I pay big bucks for figures. I am not cold or mean to people because of that. I am shy, but anime is not the reason for that, so that's just me. I'm not even Asian. Sorry, I was ranting a little, but I just hate stereo types. Especially when it discludes certain types of people. Anyways, that being said, the costumer service varies. Sometimes It can be very poor. The people can be unfocused on helping customers and instead play their video games. When you go up to ask about something, they seem annoyed. I especially hate calling them because they act even more annoyed. Although, there are times when there is a decent staff member there who will happily help you and has a nice attitude. All in all, the customer service is not something to brag about there, but it is not impossible to go up to them and just ask. They also know a lot about anime and manga, so they are well-educated in what they are trying to sell. The amount of anime goods is large and the variety has definitely improved! There are many different types of merchandise to choose from; a large selection of manga, dakimuras, oppai mouse pads, plushies, anime figures/ dolls, posters, etc. All of everything can be found there....but for a price. Make sure you bring a wad of cash. Also, I can say it is a lot better then Pacific Mall's anime stores. For one thing, they do not sell bootlegged merchandise, so no worries there. Overall, this store is great. It really has improved ever since the last time I went there. I was surprised to go in and see all the many anime things surrounding me. It was great. I would definitely go back there as much as possible. The costumer service may not be top notch, but why should that really matter when the store is actually a neat experience in itself? Wow, all this time I thought I was the only one! Looks like I am not alone about the negativity. The staff really did not make me feel welcome here at all. Especially the larger fellow. I know he probably thinks he is funny, but making fun of customers and feeling superior about your knowledge just makes you come off as rude. And It makes everyone in the store feel uncomfortable. It's now 2011 and the previous reviews still hold up. Nothing has changed (it may have become worse). The only aspect that this place has going for it is the fact that it's 100% anime, rather than a store that simply has an 'alternative section'. They do have a lot of things, but the selection, of manga for example, is rather niche (mainly to girls) and the art books they carry are obscure and over priced. Same goes with the toys and PVC figures they carry. They have a wide selection of music CDs, plush toys and t-shirts, but again, all over priced with the 'export product' excuse. Customer service is as horrible as ever. They will pay no attention to you and will not help unless you ask for it (and by help, I mean they'll give you a yes or no answer. No suggestions or alternatives). Some of their employees can't even bother to utter a single word to you. If you ask for something that they don't have, they'll shake their head and go back to doing their business on the computer, which is god knows what. This has happened on multiple occasions. Apart from that, their elitist attitude still stands. The only reason why I'm giving this review two stars instead of one is because of their unique selection (though that's not saying much). i.e. you may find a product here and there that you cannot find in any other store downtown, but be prepared to pay out your butt for it. I loved to purchase Gundam kits from this place as they have a full collection of different series of Gundams, until one day I found they over priced EVERYTHING, you pay 30% more than Amazon plus 13% in tax. Recently I noticed they raised price again so I stopped purchasing Gundams from this store. They assume everyone do shoplifting, so you have to leave your bags at their counter no matter how often you visited their store. I personally hate leaving my belongings at somewhere out of my sight. Today I wanted to check if they have any Jibanyan plushy and buy one for my girl. With a cup of bubble tea in my hand, I entered their store. The girl saw me and told me food/drinks are not allowed to take into the store, which I totally understood. So I asked if she can do me a favour and just let me leave it at their counter, she said NO, you have to leave the drink outside the door, which means outside the store and on the dirty ground. Would you leave your food on the street and continue eating it when you finished shopping 30 minutes later especially in Downtown Toronto where homeless and junkies are gathered together? I would not do that. She insisted that I should leave my drink on street so I told her I will come back later (when I finished my drink), she seemed very unhappy when I said that which I didn't understand why. So i walked outside and tried to finish my drink while walking in the -10 C windy street with frustration. I returned the store after the long walk and sadly found they have no Jibanyan product and then I left. I will never come back to this store again and today is my last time here. Even this is still one of the coolest anime places in Toronto, the products don't sell themselves and you have to provide considerate services to customers. A couple of months ago when I wrote above review I promised I will never ever enter Animextreme again, and I actually found another Anime store in Toronto which is like a hidden gem in downtown (friendly staff, lower price and membership discount). Today because my new found amine store is short of 2 figures that we really wanted to collect, under the impression that Animextreme has them, we visited their store again. Same poor experience with customer service that no need to mention, and luckily we found the two figures we were looking for and yes, they are overpriced. Then I found one thing that very interesting and I believe it is unacceptable for blind box collectors: I found the prices are different for same kind of blind boxes, so I asked an employee why they are selling the same blind boxes at different prices ($15-$25, yes, how do they have the nerve to sell a blind box at $25??!!). The girl answered they are priced by the content of the blind boxes, which means they opened the boxes and knew what's inside, then seal the box and priced them differently. That's totally BS, and not ethical for an anime store if you agree with me. So I came back to this post and changed their rating to 1 star. So guys, don't give this store your money, attention or time, until they learn how to do customer service and do business honestly. read more

I went with a friend of mine that's really into the anime merch. He wanted to have a look around and I accompanied him. My impression coming away is that this is a store that excels at making you feel unwelcome. As soon as they saw that I wasn't likely to buy anything their attitude changed. They repeatedly asked whether you needed help even after you clearly said no. They have someone follow you around to ensure that you feel uncomfortable doing anything (and likely to ensure I don't steal anything). I assume the intent is for me to leave the store as soon as possible. As soon as I picked up a book they 'remind' me that you can't read in this store. It made me feel very uncomfortable throughout my stay here, to the point where even if I had found something interesting I would not buy it here. read more

This has to be among the worst experiences I've ever had in terms of customer service. The second you walk down the stairs into the store, you're greeted with signs that assume you are both a shoplifter and a vandal; you're instructed to leave your bags at the counter and there are no food / drink items allowed. Normally, I'm not opposed to store policies such as these since I can sympathize with small stores being the victim of petty theft and careless children... but normally stores go about it in a much more polite manner. (i.e. a friendly individual will ask you to do as such or a well-worded sign... NOT something in CAPS and with blunt wording.) But let's assume I'm just being sensitive and proceed with the experience: The gentleman behind the counter in glasses who I can only assume to be the owner of the store greets you with a stone cold glare at best, but I interpreted it more as a masked scowl. This furthered the feeling that I am not so much a customer in his establishment, but more of an inconvenience. I recall my FIRST visit here to be more of the same; the same angry gentleman behind the counter with a displeased look on his face. Perhaps it was the case that I was unfortunate enough to stumble in on TWO separate occasions where he was just having a plain bad day? I think not... After about 10 minutes in the store, my friend and I both picked up an item from the shelves in the back and brought it to the counter to purchase. We weren't acknowledged in any way as paying customers; he simply grabbed the item, a bag, and told us the price of our purchase. I paid for my item with a credit card, and noticed after the transaction that *none* of the numbers on the bill were obfuscated. My credit card number, expiry and full name were in plain sight sitting beside the register. Now, these places settle up at the end of the day by printing out all of the transactions from the machine, so he doesn't actually need the entire number plainly displayed haphazardly. I asked him politely: "Would you mind scratching out some of those numbers? That seems a bit careless...", his immediate reply was "Huh? I need them for bookkeeping" with the most hateful glare I've ever seen someone give me (especially considering I just spend $100+ on a whim in his store). If it had not been for the "No Refunds or Exchanges" on the register, I would have promptly refunded the items... Though I imagine that policy is there for reasons like the one I just put forth. Will I return? Absolutely not. Small businesses need to emphasize the value of customer service... reaching out to your customer base and building a solid community of folks who enjoy what you have to offer. My 7 month pregnant wife wanted to sit for like 2 mins to rest her legs and they didn't have a chair so she sat on the stairs to the side and the guy at the register immediately blurts with a nasty tone"Let's not sit on the stairs." I visited the anime xtreme booth at fanexpo 2013 and the service was horrible they didn't want to answer my questions when i asked them if they had caesar clown figuarts zero from one piece they said they never heard of the character and looked at each other suggesting i was an idiot then i asked for the price of luffy film z figuarts zero to which they replied was 40$ while i found it at other booths at the convention for 25$ basically they treat you badly and overprice their merchandise and act like they don't even want your money i would suggest to buy whatever you want online or find alternative instead of being treated badly just so you can buy figures read more

Looks like i'm the first to actually like the shop. The store has a good selection of models, figures and manga. There's also a lot of neat things the shop has that you won't find in many other stores. They try have a good selection around but if they don't you can always ask. The store is a little cramp but they make decent use of what space they have. The employees? Well they've recently hired students and I don't know anything about them. The guys who have worked at the shop since it opened are interesting people. Most, if not all, helped open the shop and because of that, may or may not have had prior experience. They're just running what they opened. They're not bad, I've had good conversations with some of them. Price? Ever haggle? it can work. Their prices are not necessarily firm. I've gotten some good deals before. Its an independently run store who are managed by people who own the shop. There arn't many shops like these around so i'm happy that I was even able to find one. Pros and cons: I'm going to start with the pros of this place. Scratch that there is only one pro and that is the manga and posters are somewhat reasonably priced. Now let's start with the many cons of this place. Firstly, everything other than the posters and manga is overpriced to shit and isn't anything you can't find in some other store that sells anime and game merchandise also, most of the figures appear to be cheaply made. Secondly the people who work there are creeps. They follow you around the store to make sure you don't read the manga, don't take photos, or steal anything. Like some of the other reviews say the staff goes out of their way to make you feel unwelcome and overall just uncomfortable. Also one of the men behind the counter death stares every costumer who enters. And lastly the service. Short answer there is none and the staff are the some of the rudest people I have witnessed. My experience: A group of my friends and I decided to stop by this store since we had nothing better to do and we are huge anime nerds. When we entered everything was just typical, not soon after one of my friends noticed the man behind the counter was giving us the most dirty looks. We decided to ignore it and continue on with our shopping. Then one of my friends took out their phone to check the time and a man with dark hair who worked there told her not to take photos and to put her phone away. The man appeared to be following us around the store hopefully because he thought we were gonna steal because other than that following a group of teenage girls around a store isn't okay. It was the final straw when the man then walked up to my friend who was carrying a small purse backpack and told her to give it to the ugly, creepy, sketchy ass looking dude behind the counter or to get out. Reasonably my friend did not feel comfortable leaving her bag with over $100 in cash in it with him, I mean who would. We then left. Overall experience in the store was very poor. The moment I walked in the employees were blasting their movie that they were watching. I knew what I was looking for so I didn't mind that no one came to me. When looking at the back shelf of gundam figures, I was taking pictures to text message which one to get, however one employee came up to me and said "sorry no pictures" without any explanation. She wasn't mean about it, but I really find it hard to understand why taking pictures isn't allowed. Not to mention that was essentially my first interaction with the staff. Aside from that issue, I was still set on purchasing a gundam. Prices are overpriced as others have stated. If you can wait for shipping from such sites as amazon, you can save up to 50% from their price in stores. As such, my recommendation is that if you can wait, order or buy from elsewhere. If you need something urgently as gift or can't wait then come here. But be warned, no taking pictures. read more

This is actually a great place to be initiated into the world of Anime/Manga/Model Kits and other Japanamation paraphernalia. I knew very little about the subculture apart from Robotech, Akira, Star Blazers, and Ghost in the Shell--but these guys helped educate me. Anime Xtreme has a good selection of Anime that offers 7 day rental for 3 dollars (tax in), not bad. I ask the staff to pick good titles and am rarely disappointed. (they got me into Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, and Patlabor) A staff member called Steve is particularly helpful if you are patient as he is a busy person--he is also mute so do not take his silence as rudeness. His selections tend to be immaculate. The pricing for manga is not bad, US cover price. As for the model kits, they are in the reasonable range, from $10.00 and up. I think it is worth buying from a shop like this because the shop supports the culture and really provide a nice environment for the browsing shopper. In the stress of day to day life, I like to be transported into another world of first rate Anime. I really enjoy the place, its displays, Anime soundtracks blasting on the stereo, wallscrolls on display, and the staff who tend to be patient with me. Sure, you can shop on-line, but I really enjoy culture and Toronto is so much richer for this place. read more

I've been to this store since it has first opened and when I first brought a friend there to show her around the store, she was turned off. She wanted to buy a plushie but the one in her hand was slighty deformed so she asked kindly to see the plushie behind the counter and the guy starts making snotty remarks. Okay, besides the fact that they don't enforce good customer service but they purposely are IMPOLITE and ARROGANT. Of course, I decided to give the store another chance because of their convenience. I bought an action figure and the sword was BROKEN and I wanted to exchange, not even a refund. The dorky asian guy with the glasses (always with a frown on his face) says no, there's no more figures. Luckily, his friend says they have more in the back and the dorky guy starts arguing with the guy in chinese.. I have no idea what he is saying but he really starts to bug me. He grabs another figure for me and gives me this dirty look. After that I vowed never to buy anything from that store, if anything I discourage people. As the previous reviews state, they dont have anything special that you can't find anywhere else. They are sometimes within retail prices but sometimes are OVERPRICED. They are the last place I would go to for anime-related things. So many other places in Toronto, and if you drive, in Markham, why go to that hell hole? This is honestly a nice store with a decent selection of anime merchandise and mode kit supplies. This would be a easy 4 star if the prices were remotely reasonable, but they sadly are not. Figures are marked up at least 30% over the prices online, and you have to pay 13% HST on top of that. I understand that there are costs to running a brick and mortar store but at the moment it just does not make sense to shop here. I agree with everything on Sherry's review especially Bowen's one. I do however think the staffs are okay but they are rather unsociable and are not really friendly at times whenever I stop by in their store. They do have a rather nice anime collection though. My one complaint is that I wanted to preorder a movie from their store since I would prefer not to use my credit card to order it online and go though some expenses. I gave them whatever they can to contact me with but never heard back a respond and that's been a couple weeks after the movie came out. Luckily I didn't pay upfront for the order which of course they don't do that but still a little disappointed I didn't hear from anything. Kinda felt like they either forgot my request or ignore it. I have shopped here many times and have never had great customer service. I didn't entirely mind as I was content being left alone to shop. They weren't necessarily rude -- just not very friendly. But the last two times I was there convinced me my money is better spent elsewhere. The first time my friend and I were just shy of their closing time, and although we politely knocked the guy at the counter just scowled at us then walked away from the door and turned off the lights. Mind you, my friend and I aren't locals. We drove in from an hour away and we slugged through a gridlock at Spadina. I could have understood if he just said decently "Sorry ladies, we're closed and I have to be going" but to grimace like we were beggars? Impressive. The second time -- and the one I won't forgive -- I was there with my 4-year-old son who needed to use the washroom. I explained there wasn't one for the public, but then my son saw the staff washroom and asked me if he could use it. In my experience as a mom, non public washrooms have been opened if I ask politely on behalf of my son. We hadnt been refused before and people usually understand the unpredictability of young kids -- Store owners prefer avoiding an 'accident' in their store. My son is also pretty shy, it's not like he was being bratty or whiny. But despite us standing right beside the washroom door and asking politely, we were answered with an abrupt "no". He didn't even have the courtesy to offer an alternative store I could consider. It was almost closing time and I rushed my son out the store, ran five minutes away to the Dragon Centre, and took an elevator to a filthy resrtroom. I can't tell you how furious I was. That was the worst experience shopping with my son I've ever had, in any store. read more

I have been to this store several times over the last ten years. The first time it was an amazing experience. Unique import goods, a rental system which even then was starting to be rare; though I didn't live downtown so it was somewhat useless to me, and the widest selection of English language manga possible outside of a convention experience. However, every subsequent visit, I am sad to say the common complaints and rumours surrounding this establishment became increasingly visible and frustrating. Every so often, on a slow day, there will be a friendly temporary or part time cashier, any other time it seems like a miserable workplace with part time staff seemingly afraid to make it clear they work there; heads down, never addressing customers, and doing menial tasks. I have had a few "main" cashiers, and very rarely are they anything but rude, and at worst can be condescending and give preferential treatment to some customers seemingly arbitrarily. On a recent visit, my friends and I were passive aggressively asked if we needed help with anything. We replied no, and said we were just looking around. A few minutes later we were asked again, and we replied that we were fine. We were then told that they had a "pretty strict no loitering policy on the weekends." Fair enough I suppose, but we mentioned how we were looking for a present, and thus it wasn't a specific objective kind of shopping trip. Hearing that, there was some unintelligible grumbles or some sort of response that made it clear he was frustrated with our presence but didn't know how to respond. Now, believe it or not, this I can understand to a degree based on the size of the store; but at this time it was by no means bustling. So, my friends and I continued our search, just at an increased pace. A few minutes later, I heard him tell some other customers the same "no loitering" message, and at first was a bit relieved that it wasn't just us that he was singling out. However, just a few minutes later, some customers who I suppose were looking at some higher priced items and had been there about as long as we were, were asked if they needed any help. They said no; but this time, instead of a message about loitering, they were told "Okay great, take your time." It was that "take your time" which hurt, and made me decide to write this review. I don't know if he knew those customers and thus they were trusted, or if it was the fact they were looking at higher priced items, but the fact that they didn't once get told the same thing two separate groups of other customers were told just minutes prior really rubbed me the wrong way. Again, I don't know if it was an issue of trusted customers, or elitism, or what, but it's not how one should conduct themselves as an owner/employee. I don't mind the bag policy personally, I think for this type of store it's acceptable, and kind of expected at any comic book store of a certain size. It has a lot of blind spots, and is neither large enough to be able to have a good overall view of the store, nor small enough to be able to keep tabs on everyone and everything going on. However, perhaps instead of being scared about loitering on the weekends when it comes to certain customers, the staff could be there to help and ask customers for help in a non-passive aggressive way, watch for shoplifters, or address issues of actual loitering instead of normal shopping behaviour. Maybe a camera system could also help, but I know it may be too much of a cost for a small-ish store like this. The selection is good, and better than you'll find "in person" in Toronto when it comes to specifically Japanese character goods. I wouldn't call any of their prices overpriced to a large extent. They seem "tough but fair" when you factor in the convenience and experience of shopping in an "anime store." If customer service and price don't matter to you, and you want a large selection and the experience of shopping at a store catering mostly to anime and manga, then you'll probably actually have a pretty good time at this store. Outside of a convention it's the only place in the area that can provide what it offers. However, if pleasant staff and good prices are what you're after and you don't want to shop online, I recommend waiting for a convention, or shopping around at any of the general comic book stores in the city. The selection won't be as good if you're looking for specifically anime/manga goods, but you probably won't be urged to write a negative review based on your increasingly negative experiences over the years. read more

First of all this place is ridiculously over priced. I don't understand how they have the nerve to sell some of their merch at the prices they do. Almost everything from figmas to blind boxes are MORE EXPENSIVE then if you were to buy them online plus the shipping.. They don't even have anything that's super rare or limited. They sell a lot of boring character figmas/nens that would retail for like 40-50 bucks, but they price them for around 70-80. To be fair I am not into Gundums, so I have no Idea how those prices compare, but I honestly doubt they are much better. I can understand trying to turn a profit and obviously getting some of the merchandise overseas can be pretty expensive, but their prices are just pushing the boundaries of profit and crossing into the realm of just plain greedy. Second almost EVERYONE that works there is just the biggest jerk. You ask them a question, they sometimes don't even look at you to answer. If you ask them about a product or manga that is supposed to come out, or that just came out that they hadn't heard of, they treat you like you're information is wrong and like you couldn't possibly know something they don't. For example back when No.6 first got translated and released in English I asked an employee if they had any of the first issue. He responds with "that isn't even in English..." I said "Oh it just got translated recently, it came out like about a month ago I think?" He goes "I never even heard they were doing it, I really don't think they are planning to, its not a very popular series." That isn't even the only situation that happened, There have been countless times I ask about something they didn't know about and instead of just answering with "oh I'm sorry I don't think we have that" they give me this big spiel about how they haven't heard of it being released and they would know if it was. I also frigging HATE how they make you take your bag off and just throw it at the back of the counter. Like I'm sorry if you want to avoid thievery, invest in some god damn cameras, god knows you can afford it with the ridiculous prices you charge. It's not fair of you to hold my property hostage because you can't fork over a few extra dollars to have a proper security system. It's cool to have an anime store in Toronto so you can see some of the items you want in real life. But I just don't recommend buying anything from here. On the positive side they are a well organized store with lots of Japanese merchandise ranging from Bandai Gundam model kits to Hot Toys figures. If you like to see toys before you buy, this is a good place to go to check out. Keep in mind you need to leave your bags at the door, and no food or drinks allowed (you have to finish them before you enter or they won't let you in). My experience with the staff is okay, they shared my interests and made some small talks about action figures. I have been there close to a dozen times as I work very close to check out their stock and they are pretty good with keeping up with new releases. I have only ever purchased from them ONCE (actually my girlfriend did when she bought a gift for me) the reason is because of the Xtreme-ly unreasonable prices (now I know why they are called AnimeXtreme, ha ha) Of all the merchandise I checked out, they have close to a 75% mark up from the MSRP! They charge you nearly double price compare to some other places. I know this because I buy a lot of things from amiami.com they are my reference price. Also if something's been released for a long time, you can count on it being more expensive here. If something is a limited edition, it's way more expensive here than most retail websites. Once I asked if they will have a newly released toy in stock soon as most online places were sold out, they said check back in a few weeks. I checked their website a few weeks later and behold they have what I wanted but wow, the price, originally a $250 USD toy, they want $500 CAD plus 13% sales tax because it seems to be sold out everywhere else at the moment. While some of the other $250 toys of the same line that are more common are at a more reasonable $350 CAD. They want scalp people out of $150, wow, you can better deals on ebay (in the scalpers' natural habitat). They can keep their precious toy thank you. I do not support local stores raising prices above MSRP for new releases. I understand if it's an older toy that's no longer in production, yes it might be worth more, but not for new releases. I do not recommend making any purchases at this place unless it's something you really want and can't possibly get anywhere else, even then I would think again. read more
