My girlfriend and I stopped here for lunch during the week while on a road trip. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the atmosphere (Japanese monster movies on the TVs....quite funny) and decor. The service was good and our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and answered our questions nicely. After having a phenomenal dinner downstairs at epiphany the night before, came to Anju for lunch an was pretty disappointed. I have traveled the world, including Japan, eating sushi and everything else and can honestly say that I would rather eat pre made sushi from the grocery store. The nori was wet, the rice did not appear to be sushi rice as it was medium grain rice that was clearly unwashed and overcooked and very very gummy. The only saving grace was their dumplings which did have a good flavor. These guys are trying too hard and their menu of Korean and Italian is bizarre to me. Fix your sushi and you'll be a more successful place. I wish you the best! Just go learn! read more

A solid go-to place to visit anytime you are in BMI. The reason I'd give 3 and not 4 stars is because of some of the odd flavor combinations on the pizza. At some restaurants you can trust the chefs have come up with something interesting, even if you wonder if the flavors will marry well. But at Anju Above I've felt left down by some of the odd pairings, my advice would be if something seems strange on the menu, don't get it. The sushi here is amazing. I went with the family in the afternoon for a quick bite and was approached with wonderful service and fresh food. The Gucci roll is very refreshing and the teriyaki roll is extremely flavorful. It's worth a shot to try this sushi spot. Very cool atmosphere with unique lighting and a modern vibe to it. We had the sushi, which was very good and filling. Slightly limited menu but it works. The house punch was delicious but a very small serving for $6 a drink. We also tried the Korean bbq wings and they were great. My wife and I have been here twice and we've been recommending it to our friends. We really appreciate the reasonable prices relative to the food quality. One minor criticism - the menu is really short, so after two visits it is easy to have tasted everything. The atmosphere is great. Maybe I went wrong ordering just sushi but I was really craving it. There was very few fish options! I was very surprised. What I did end up getting was okay, not terrible but I was definitely not impressed. If I lived in the area I would definitely try it again and get something else, but I don't so I don't think I will be going again next time I'm in town. Not a five star connoisseur but this golden greatness is a hundo well worth spending. One of my guest's felt the owner/chef a bit pompous but my retort was...when you're this good, you get the swagger of greatness. Probably couldn't down a tequila shot with the gentleman but his attention to detail and the staff he lead exemplifies the attention to detail that is second to only hospitality text books. Local farm fresh veggies and a sense of environmental responsibility is a huge bonus to the fabulous flavor! I would travel well more than an hour to enjoy this magnificence again! read more

Who knew such a wonderful gem existed in Bloomington, Illinois. Literally found this place online as we were traveling through looking for something to eat. This place is a very unique twist on Asian fusion, and really promotes farm to table cooking. Its a little confusing as the owner owns two different restaurants simply walk up the stairs for Anju above. The staff was absolutely amazing and checked in frequently to see how we were doing or to engage in small talk. This restaurant emphasizes sharing, so we decided to order 5 Korean wings made with their homemade Korean BBQ sauce, absolutely wonderful, perfect crispness and spicy tangy sauce. We also ordered the hand rolled pork dumplings, which were absolutely wonderful. Ironically they serve wooden fire pizza's, which you usually do not think of at an Asian fusion, we ordered the diablo pizza and it was fantastic. For desert we ordered the rice pudding with macademia nuts, very sweet rich flavor enjoyed this very much. All of this food was $30, so the prices are more than reasonable, if I am ever back in this direction, would definitely go out of my way to eat here. read more

We ended up here because we had reservations at their flagship Epiphany Farms Restaurant. After perusing the menu we decided that we didn't want to pay big city prices for rather mundane 70s haute supper club food so we went upstairs. Well, what a shocker! This place can only be described as the "ethnic" food section at a Kroger grocery store. A gharish display of misappropriated tourist gift store finds coupled with a lack of empathy for any kind of Asian aesthetic. The pizza is great however. Rubbery filling in the dumplings is just the first of it, but the sushi, just everything about the sushi was wrong. The rice was of poor quality. The rice was the wrong temperature. The rice did not hold together. The rice was not seasoned properly. Too much vinegar. The fish was cut too thin and hence, not draped properly around the rice. The grain of the fish was the wrong way. The soy sauce is of extremely poor quality. The wasabi was absolutely disgusting. Next: You either word your menu in Transliterated Japanese with English translations, or in plain English. Is Hamachi the same as Yellowtail? Be clear. A note about server response. I voiced my opinion about the sushi when asked and was told be the server that she "didn't know much about sushi." I told her we did at which point she chuckled and walked away. I paid the bill anyway. I suggest, double the price of your sushi and make it four times as good. The pizza though, get the pizza. The pizza is good. read more

Cool place to take friends or a date. Have been there for both lunch and dinner. Lunch time the place was a lot slower (crowd wise) and brighter inside. Dinner time the atmosphere was better in my opinion. The food is great. The korean bbq wings had a great sauce. The sushi is yummy (spicy salmon!) The pizza is fresh. Wasnt a fan of the drinks. The house punch which is a favorite there tasted like a mint julip. There is no mention of mint in the drink description, so if you are not a fan of mojitos or julips, you probably wont like it. Drinks also seemed to be on the 'small' side compared to places like Rosies or Reality Bites for the same price. But that doesnt take away from the experience. The cookie bites are awesome. Saw all the great reviews so I had to try it as I was passing thru Bloomington for business. Sat at bar. Three servers behind bar. Interesting menu - sushi meets tapas meets pizza. Good selection of craft beer. Asian Pork Buns were just ok. Korean wings were tasty / tangy and with crisp skin. Spicy salmon roll was good. Wondered why there wasn't any sushi on the menu I was presented with(?) Downside was the service: I had to ask twice (two different servers) for silverware and chop sticks. Then had to ask if soy sauce was available. Then had to ask for saucer to put soy sauce (in). Finally, was presented with dessert menu where the sushi was on the other side. Got an apology when I asked why sushi wasn't made available with menu. It's amazing how service colors the experience. read more

If you go with 4 or less people this place is amazing! Go with with a group larger even with a reservation made a week in advance a there is possibility you will have the worst service experience in your life time. 3 times I have gone with a large group between 6 and 15 people and each time they seemed very over whelmed to the point people were waiting 30 to 45 minutes just to get a drink, food never showed up while others received theirs. The first time I chalked it up to it being really busy. The 2nd time after 2 hours and no food I left. The 3rd time it was my own fault for thinking this time it would be different. I don't want to discourage people from going as the food is great but keep it to a date night and not for a group larger than 4. read more
