This is doubly true when shopping outside your realm of knowledge- in this case, sari shopping. This is a world governed by fabrics and stones and stitching, where pricing can fluctuate wildly depending on how aggressively you deride their sticker price. If I were a raccoon or a crow, I'd be in shiny-thing heaven; as a Detroiter with a wardrobe ready for corporate finance, all the bling was a little overwhelming. The patterns and colors seemed so brazen, and in my mind sequins were relegated to Vegas showgirls and grandmas with mad Bedazzler skills. Still, with some expert assistance, I took the plunge and tried some things that were way out of my comfort zone, and they looked AMAZING. Maloncho is directly across from the heavy-hitter of sari shops, Rima Sari Center. As such, they differentiate themselves by specializing in more affordable outfits, in a much more customer friendly setting. Maloncho is bright and maneuverable, service is friendly and attentive, and bargaining is more readily accepted- everything that Rima is not. The most expensive saris are around $300, compared to the $300-$1000 at Rima. The dressing room is large and well lit, perfect for trying on multiple outfits and giving yourself a once over before coming out to show your companions. The rule of thumb at the sari shops in this area is that the price on the sticker is just a starting point for negotiations- you should expect at least $20-30 dollars off a cheap dress, and about 40% off an expensive dress. Also, the first discounted price they give you is NOT the best price that can be had. Ask a few times for the best price or for additional things thrown in for free (tailoring or jewelry), or simply make an offer. Tailoring at this location should run between $5 and $10 dollars and take roughly 24hrs to complete, well worth it for a garment to fit perfectly. For a bold red sari, two sets of bangles, and tailoring to take it in a bit, my total bill came to $70- perfectly reasonable for a special ensemble to wear to my best friends wedding. My sister was asking about the vegan soaps, and they smelled really good. They had some other items as well such as clothing and jewelry. The candles smelled amazing as well. Yesterday, Friday November 8, 2024 I sang songs written by author/musician Heather Buchanan and Tracy Kash for Heather's newest novel titled, VICTORS. It is about Black musicians who went to France to help fight in World War I. Ultimately, they were largely responsible for our victory and when they weren't fighting they were playing music, sharing the new jazz sound which influenced not only Europe but the world. My dress, purse, fan, long strand of pearls and headpiece, all purchased from the Peacock Room in the Park Shelton were a smash hit! They also offer a wide variety of sizing so those of us with more ample curves have options, too. When I walked in, I fell in love with a nice cowl neck top. Made in America (which they noted on the tag) the top was black and had a shiny silver spotted pattern on the cowl area of the shirt. It was different! The pricing was inline with what I've paid for other pieces made in America, which I personally value and seek out when shopping. When I turned the corner in the back, a whole new area revealed itself. Several racks of wardrobe pieces that will all stand out in a crowd. I told my husband that some of them I saw myself wearing when I finally doubled down on my "fun and kooky art teacher vibe" but not everything is that bold. There were some very smart pieces, some more traditional silhouettes but in bold colors. There is also mid-century modern clothes that were retro but also in the here and now. I haven't intended on buying a bright pink party dress, but when I slipped it on in the fitting room I was thrilled - it fit like a glove. The dress was an XXL which I don't think I've ever worn, but knowing fashion sizing can sometimes be wonky I gave it a go. It had some frill, a front zipper that smartly hid itself (and thank goodness, a dress I can zip up for myself and I don't have to shimmy into), and the best part... POCKETS! REAL FUNCTIONAL POCKETS.
