This flea is a few blocks away from the market , within walking distance. What I loved about this particular one, was that it wasn't overwhelmingly huge. Just the perfect amount of vendors selling quite a few vintage items and antiques. I zeroed in on the $10 or less tent and the brooch/pin/jewelry vendor. It has a fun and lively vibe with a mix of vintage items, handmade crafts, jewelry, artwork, clothing, collectibles, and food stands all in one place. The volunteers behind this effort worked extremely hard to preserve this garden from becoming an affordable housing development. They really want members of the community to volunteer and I read that you can talk to the staff about planting things on your own there. Overall very inviting. Nay, let me whisper it to you: Find it in the middle of Elizabeth Street. Walk in and admire the collection of statues on your left and right. Stroll through the flower gardens, and take in all the colors -- magenta, canary yellow, fresh green. Watch children weave in and out of the flowering blooms. Entertain the idea that maybe, after all, there can be right in the world. Sundays will pass quickly here, whether you come for a stroll, a bite, or a quiet afternoon of reading. Harry is a very easy to talk to and someone who has lived and breathed military antiques since they were surplus items in the 1960's so I was lucky enough to get the chance to pick his brain a little. I had a wonderful experience talking to him, and seeing some pieces such as a WW2 Japanese battleship flag in wool which is something I have only seen in books. I bought some really grade A antiques at what I think were fair prices. I would recommend calling him if you have any questions or want to sell something. If you have even a passing interest in military antiques, Sparr's is worth the visit for the experience. This is a 5/5 for me.

In the end, it would have been faster to order it myself online. More recently, I tried to exchange a gift I received, a biography (not a musical score), that I already owned. I simply wanted to exchange the biography, which was clearly unread, for a different one that was actually more expensive. I was happy to pay the difference. I even had the physical receipt. Both were full-price books, not discounted items. The exchange was declined under their umbrella policy. I understand having a policy in place to protect publishers, but it would be clearer to simply state "All Sales Final on Printed Materials." Instead, the language references "copyrighted materials," which suggests there may be exceptions, when in practice there are not. I want to support a neighborhood brick and mortar music shop. But when selection is limited, flexibility is minimal, and communication is inconsistent, it becomes difficult to justify staying loyal. I am disappointed to say, that I will likely purchase my scores and books elsewhere going forward. At times, the store feels oriented more toward internal or institutional purchases than toward the musicians and readers who live in the neighborhood.

It's located under the Manhattan Bridge at 80 Pearl St. and has a mix of vintage clothing, jewelry, antiques, collectibles, art, records, and handmade goods. The vintage point-and-shoot camera table was the highlight for my teen and apparently a ton of twenty-somethings are drawn to those Canon ELPHs and PowerShots, Nikon Coolpix, Sony Cyber-shots, and Fujifilm FinePix cameras. Those cameras are having a serious comeback, thanks to their nostalgic early-2000s look of soft, grainy, flash-heavy photos that somehow feel cooler than anything your way more modern phone takes. The crowd surrounding the table never died down. My only regret is arriving midday so consider going earlier in the morning to browse without the shoulder-to-shoulder chaos. Open Saturdays & Sundays, 10 AM-5 PM. From Manhattan, the F to York St. or A/C to High St. My tip: Make it part of a DUMBO day, not the main event.
