Dr. Anthony Ku has upgraded his practice which in my mind is like inventing new landscape. He's already a practitioner that I travel from my home north of Berkeley to visit in S. San Francisco for all of my dental needs. He's been my dentist since the early 1990s. In recent years Dr. Ku has started performing implant surgeries which was just in time for me. A root canal and crown that I'd gotten in 1991 finally needed an upgrade. That was Dr. Ku's first dental work on my behalf aside from cleaning and filling cavities. Two decades of life for that root canal and crown is more than anyone can ask for. Having suffered a traumatic injury to that very spot two years ago, I needed some extra bone grafting which was accomplished, then an implant, followed by a healing abutment and finally the crown. That was over a year of work, but I'm very happy with the results. I'm actually ecstatic in that it's permanent, looks great, and feels so wonderful. For me this new skill set developed by Dr. Ku came just in the nick of time. I really couldn't afford to have it done at a more expensive establishment. Last year I was one of Dr. Ku's earlier efforts as only a dozen people preceded me. My confidence in Dr. Ku's work is such that I never had a moment of worry or doubt as to the outcome. Now this year, implant surgeries are a very regular part of Dr. Ku's practice. I can strongly recommend this area of Dr. Ku's practice. The permanence of implants compared to root canals and crowns should be on anyone's agenda if the choice should come up. Very nice people but I was very unhappy and uncomfortable with the lack of cleanliness of the tools they were using on my daughter, there was lipstick on their tools maybe from a prior patient, at that moment, I asked the dentist not to continue any work on my daughter and left in a rush. read more

Due to the rave review my cousin was telling me about Dr. Ku's office, I was really excited about scheduling an appointment with him. Unfortunately I will never know how good they are because they never called me back. My husband left two messages, yet we still did not get a call back from the front desk. It was possible that they were very busy because it was near the end of the year. There was no message on their answering machine about them taking a vacation either. I was very disappointed in the fact that they never called us back. Oh well it was their loss. We ended up going to another dentist and I had a fantastic experience from the beginning to the end. My experience with Dr. Ku has been fairly epic: Visit 1- Having moved to the area recently I needed a new dentist covered under my insurance. I found Dr. Ku via Yelp. Since he had such awesome reviews I figured this was the place to go. I went in and the Hygienist did an absolutely fantastic job cleaning my teeth. She was thorough, personable, I think we even had a few laughs. It was probably one of my best experiences at a dentist (though it's never really fun.) Then I found out I needed a crown, no big deal, I've had so many cavities in my life its only was a matter of time. Also I've had this permanent stain on my front teeth that I decided was time to finally correct with some veneers. Dr. Ku suggested it would be a good time to take care of it because there was a tiny chip in the tooth that touch the stain. He explained this would make the tooth vulnerable. Okay, I'll bite. Pun intended. Visit 2- Getting temporaries. Besides this procedure being a lot more painful than I thought it would be (not a fault of Dr. Ku's of course). The appointment went fairly well. I received my temporaries and I was on my way. Visit 3 - Permeant Placement of Crown and Veneers. This is where everything started going down hill. Dr Ku and team remove the temporary crown (simple, just pull it off) and drill off the temporary veneers. The driving for the temporary veneers was extremely painful, just like getting them drilled in the first place, but with less numbing stuff. I kept cringing, but they just remarked "oh, I must have hit a sensitive spot." I'm not sure why they didn't numb me up enough. He then put on the permanent crown (simple), then he started placing the permanent veneers on my front teeth. He placed them temporarily to view and said, "they look really nice" before handing me the mirror. They were DARK YELLOW. Disgusting. I had clearly asked for White Veneers, as I am paying A LOT of money for a mostly cosmetic procedure I want something I will feel confident with and that aren't Yellow teeth. Who wants yellow teeth. He claimed that the dental lab sent over the wrong veneers and so they rebuilt temporaries for my front teeth. Not only were the teeth wrong, but he clearly didn't look at them before painful drilling off the previous temporaries. Then tried to push them off as the correct ones. I then told him to make sure that the next set was WHITE. I reinforced with that I will want to whiten the rest of my teeth later on so they can be lighter than the rest of my teeth. (For context the rest of my teeth are fairly white already, though slightly yellowed. I didn't even use whitening toothpaste prior because I didn't want the stain that was on the teeth previously to stand out too much.) At home, the crown broke. Only 4 days after the permanent crown was put on it broke. I don't grind my teeth, I wasn't even eating. I was watching TV, there was a pop in my mouth and I started spitting out porcelain. So much for 7 to 15 years right? I called Dr. Ku's office to tell them. They offered to re-do it. I also insisted that before I come him, he checks the new Front Veneers that they are right. Because each day I come in I have to take a day off work. Visit 4 - I sit down in the chair and he goes to start numbing me and drilling off the temporary veneers. I stop him and ask to see the veneers before he does any drilling. Since I already know how painful this will be. He shows me them and I say, "they still look a little dark." He told me that its because I was looking at them on the mold, which is darker and they will look lighter once they are adhered to my teeth because they will use a light composite to attach them. He procedures to drill off the temporaries again and place them on my mouth. He shows them temporarily placed on. I say, "umm, they still look a little dark and yellow." he tells me not to work. Again, the composite will be light and will shine through apparently. He adheres them, drilled off the permeant crown that broke (extremely painful) and then leaves. One of the other guys in the office then puts another temporary crown for the one that broken. I didn't look at the veneers ones they were put on in the office. One I got home, I was disgusted. They were clearly darker than I wanted and tinted yellow. The two natural teeth beside them in my mouth are actually MUCH WHITER. Needless to say, I'm furious at this point. But not sure what to do because I can't keep taking time off or deal with this. Visit 5 - I went back for my last appointment for the crown. Told Dr. Ku that I was disappointed and had him finish the crown. He didn't really offer any sort of solution, but gave me whitening trays and seemed upset that I was disappointed. (if that means anything). I truly appreciate the trays, but they are making the veneers yellowness more noticeable, so umm thanks? Conclusion: I won't be returning to his office. Now, I'm trying to save up monday to get my veneers redone somewhere else read more

I just had the most amazing experience with Dr. Ku and his wonderful staff! I have never had a dentist as a hero before, but today that all changed! Sadly, I have not seen a dentist in over 5 years..... I was very nervous and not sure of how bad I needed assistance. Dr. Ku, was thorough, patient, and explained everything to me. Then we talked about a treatment plan, and Dr. Ku said, "Let's set up another appointment". Since I really needed to start my treatment plan soon for my health, there was an opening same day. I have lived in the Bay Area pretty much my whole life. I have been to at least a dozen different dentists. Dr. Ku is the most competent of them all. He did a through evaluation and explained everything to me in detail. He used digital x-rays (80% less radiation than regular) and they appeared on the monitor in front of me within minutes. He also took full color pictures of my teeth and mouth with a mini-camera. He's mild mannered and nice. I don't feel like he is trying to sell me anything unlike some dentists that I have been in the past trying to push me to get treatments that I don't need so that they can get more money. He called me at home to check up on me after my teeth whitening. I suffer from gum recession but the cleaning that he did didn't hurt. Also, I have gone to dentists in the past where the dentist is good but the front desk/billing people aren't very competent so it was helpful that he knew exactly how to bill. I have Metlife and Blue Cross and he is in network for both. read more

I didn't have dental insurance for a couple years, so needless to say i needed a dentist check up pretty bad and i was terrified! My wife kept telling me she had a great dentist but i was still reluctant to go until i finally couldn't hide anymore. I had my braces taken out at age 13 and then didn't keep up with my orthodontist as i should have. (I traveled and played sports so i only had maintenance type visits with various dentist, not one primary) so i had a bottom retainer glued in for about a decade that should have been removed years before. So when i went to see Dr. Ku i didn't know what to expect or what he would say about the state of my teeth. I am also a smoker and the retainer was causing a lot of bone-loss on my teeth and the gum-line was receding. my teeth had become dependent on the retainer so i was still unable to remove it as this time. But Dr. Ku was so helpful, patient, and knowledgeable. I have had 3 separate appointments so far and my teeth recovery is amazing! He gave me a general first check up, then i had a regular cleaning, and finally a deep cleaning (that i was numb for). He did such a great job, i had no idea how much extra crap was actually in my mouth stuck on my teeth and under my gums.(gross i know) And i brush at least 3x a day as is. But that retainer trapped things i couldn't even see or get to. He gets in there and does what he has to do without being too rough. He talks to you and lets you know whats going on the whole time so there is no surprises. He's a great dentist, and i will continue to see him as well as the rest of my family. If i could give 6 stars or more i would because this guy definitely knows his stuff. He made what could have been a very painful and unpleasant dental visit run very smooth for me. I obviously still had the usual soreness from the amount of work that was done, but i must say that was one of the best dental experiences ever. i feel so much happier and now i don't feel so self conscious about losing my teeth before I'm 30! lol. My first dental visit with Dr. Anthony Ku far exceeded my expectations. As soon as I walked in, I was warmly greeted by Dr. Ku, escorted to a dental chair by Maricel, the super nice dental hygienist, and periodically the friendly receptionist, Sonya, kept checking in on me to see if I needed anything. I have super sensitive teeth and I'm terrified of a simple cleaning; Dr. Ku very gently cleaned my teeth. I honestly felt no discomfort and no pain. Dr. Ku has an awesome bedside manner, he is informative, caring, and thoroughly explained my dental procedures in terms that I could understand.
