Werkmeister Christmas Tree Farm - Trees!

So, I was a little disappointed with my visit to Werkmeister Christmas Tree Farm, but I still think…read morethey are a four star business as long as expectations are set correctly. My boyfriend and I don't often get a real tree because we usually travel for the holiday. This year we decided to get one anyway, mostly at my insistence. I was a little worried about a pre-cut tree because Thanksgiving was so early this year that I figured they'd be getting pretty dry. So yesterday, December 1st, we decided to find a place where you can cut your own. We'd done so in the past, but it has been several years. My boyfriend found Werkmeister through an older Courier Journal article. The article featured multiple places but Werkmeister seemed to be the closest on this side of the river. We prepped the car and put on terrible clothes and shoes since it was a very wet day. I then forced Matt to listen to Christmas music for the 30 minute drive to Shepherdsville. Once there, we learned that they had closed the fields for the year and only had pre-cut Fraser Firs brought in from North Carolina two weeks prior. I was definitely disappointed because we had driven all that way to avoid it. They explained that they only had the fields open Thanksgiving weekend and that a blight has hurt a lot of local tree farmers. It sounds like the fields had to be closed to keep the farm sustainable. The Fraser Firs, which do not grow in Kentucky, were beautiful and still in really fresh shape, despite having been cut and shipped two weeks prior. They had a variety of heights, but every tree was a flat rate of $60. All of them had been trimmed to have a great shape. We decided to get one anyway. Everyone there was really nice and helpful. They trimmed the bottom branches for us, gave it a fresh cut, shook it free of some of the water and loose needles, baled it, and helped us get it in the car. The service was really good. To be honest, it's unlikely we'll be back because we usually travel Thanksgiving weekend, and it's not really worth the drive for a pre-cut tree. But if you are around for Thanksgiving or live in the Shepherdsville area Werkmeister is good choice.

Simply put and without reservation or dispute these trees are the best trees you can find anywhere on planet Earth. We both highly recommend a live tree from this farm in your living room. If you put it in a tree stand that holds water. Ours holds two gallons and give it water until it stops drinking water anywhere from 10 to 14 days. It will last into January most likely, ours always do . My wife and I have been buying trees for 36 years. We have bought trees from many places. We even for a short period went trough artificial trees. We were never happy until we found the Fraser Fir tree. They are simply one of the best Christmas Trees you can buy. Tom sells out every year, so go early. Tom is retired as a professor from Lexington University teaching landscape architecture if my memory serves me correctly. When youu realize these trees are around six years old and have been carefully manicured by Tom its really quite a bargain. They are humble people with a great tree. Ive always really enjoyed going there, being greated by his big friendly dogs and getting a tree. Steve

I grew up with fake trees, but real trees have such a nice smell I figured we would give it a shot. Now I'm hooked. This little farm provides a great experience. They have a variety of different types of tree to choose from, along with a variety of sizes. All you have to do is walk out there, find it, hold up your provided measuring stick, and look around for an employee. They'll drive over, price it for you (our six-footer was right at $100), cut it, drive it to your car, and even tie it on for you. Additionally, this location is very dog-friendly. They even have a few friendly dogs of their own running around (even more reason for us to want to come back).

It is a great family owned business that they are passionate about. *Disclaimer* this IS a cut your own tree place. That means going out into the fields, finding your tree, cutting it, and bringing it back to the lot. For me, that is part of the experience, and they DO help you by shaking it, netting it, and will assist getting it on/in your car if needed. If you're down with this keep reading! From the moment you arrive you are greeted by the helpful owner and a trusty sweet old black lab. There is a small building with free popcorn and hot chocolate. They provide saws or you can bring your own. There are a huge selection of trees from small to super tall. They have several different types of trees as well. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. I found out last year that dogs are welcome leashed, as long as they are well behaved so this year I brought my husky. As mentioned above you cut your tree and carry it back to the stand where they get it ready for you. They do provide twine for tying it to your car as well. Each year a free dated ornament is given to you upon checkout, which I find charming. Sometimes they even have homemade wreaths for sale. Their prices are SUPER reasonable, far more than that tree lot with trees that have been cut for months and wont last long.

Lots of love for local tree farms ... especially this family-run favorite in Alexandria, KY!…read more My husband and I had been planning to head further north toward Dayton, OH to cut down our tree this year ... except most of the farms in that area now take time reservations, and they were all booked up by the time we were looking for a tree. We did a bit of research, and decided to check out the adorable Gubser Tree Farm. We were not disappointed! We drove up to the farm, and we were immediately greeted by one of the owners, who encouraged us to grab a saw and check out the trees. There were green tags attached to the trees that were eligible to cut down ... with prices ranging from $60-$70. Anyone who's cut down their own Christmas tree knows that these are usually upwards of $100 - so this is quite a deal. The trees themselves all seemed well taken care of - and we had a hard time selecting which one we liked, since there were a few we had our eyes on. We went with a thicker tree that's around 7' tall, and it cost us $70. After we cut down the tree, the owners wrapped it up for us, and tied it to the top of our car. They were quick, friendly, and efficient. We paid for the tree inside of a little craft shop, and if we hadn't been in a bit of a hurry, we would have certainly been tempted by the homemade zucchini bread. All in all, it's safe to say a visit to Gubser Tree Farm is going to become our new holiday tradition!
