What a wonderful place to spend an afternoon! This library has it all, especially when you have littles. So much to see, do, read, explore. The kids section is welcoming. On a recent visit there was a tent with fake wood and rocks to pretend camp. I also appreciate all the seating and interactive displays. The kids area also has two family bathrooms. I noticed security checking them, it sure why but I appreciated it. Kids mess around a lot and so it's good someone's checking. I saw security walking around outside keeping an eye too. The outdoor area is nice and big with places to explore, a cement stage and Adirondack chairs for everyone but and small. Didn't buy anything from the cafe but they had a decent selection. I saw hot and cold drinks made to order. There's also a refrigerator with bottled drinks.

We go on Saturday's for kids story time and it's always a good time. The library has fun events and the staff are all helpful. Especially liked the reindeer event this year.

This is going to be a rant, but I am not happy. I used to go to the Gonzales Branch Library all the…read moretime, mainly for the idea lab. It was hands down one of the best things the city had to offer. The staff in the lab were always chill, helpful, and actually seemed to care about people getting creative and making stuff. It wasn't just a room with some machines, it had life. People were learning, sharing ideas, making dope a projects. It actually felt like a community. Now? It's been CLOSED for almost FOUR MONTHS. A quarter of a damn year. For "staffing issues." How long does it take to hire and train a few people for a space that isn't even open all day? Who the hell is running this place? When I have brought it up to staff, they basically agreed that whoever in charge has no clue what they're doing. They didn't say it outright, but you know how to tell when someones like, your not wrong but the walls have eyes and ears. If even the employees are frustrated, what does that tell you? How do you think people in the community like me who cant use the space feel? Meanwhile, the space just sits there, locked up, collecting dust, while our tax dollars are still paying for it. And on top of that, parking at this location is already trash, and when I asked about it, the guy at the front desk smirked and told me to "get used to it" because once the construction next door is done, there won't even be a parking lot anymore. So now we have a closed idea lab and a library that's about to be even harder to get to. Seriously, who thought this was a good idea? And let's talk about this excuse of "improving our experience," as I was told one of the times I dropped in to see if its open again. How does shutting it down completely improve anything? That's straight up nonsense. I asked around, trying to get a real answer, and staff either didn't know or wouldnt say. It was like they were keeping some big secret. Makes you wonder if something shady went down in there. But honestly, even if something shady did happen it doesnt even matter what that was because at this point the real shady thing is whoever is in charge of getting this place running just not getting it done. That is the real crime here. I even went to another idea lab across town, hoping for something similar, and it was dead. No energy, no community feel, just cold and boring. Gonzales had something special, and now it's just gone, and at this point I have to blame mismanagement at the top. Four months is more than enough time to train someone for a whole new job. You could build a small house in that time. But they cant figure out how to staff a room that was only open a few hours a day? Either someone in charge is straight up bad at their job, or they just don't care. So what's really going on? If staffing is the issue, tell people why you have all this staff sitting around at desks all around the place and cant get a person in there to open the place. And let me be real here, staff are only sitting there at those desks because thats what their boss or bosses want them to do. That is the priority of the higher ups or the bosses boss. If there's a plan to reopen, share it. At this point leadership has screwed up, own it and dont keep us in the dark like were idiots. Open the idea lab back up, or at least give the community some real answers. We deserve better than this.

I had a very disappointing experience at the library today…read more I was printing a large set of documents when the printer jammed. I'm a teacher, so I'm very familiar with these exact printers and know how to clear a paper jam. However, I also understand that many businesses prefer employees to handle jams themselves to avoid damage, so I went to the front desk and politely said, "Hey, I just jammed the printer. Could someone help me?" The employee's response was simply, "So?" I honestly just stared at her because I couldn't believe it. I said, "I can unjam it, I guess," and she replied, "No, no." I then asked what would happen to my print job since it stopped in the middle of printing. I had already loaded $20 onto my printing card because I was printing a large number of documents. I wasn't worried about a few cents--I just wanted to know if the print job would resume or if I would have to send everything through again and be charged twice. Instead of answering my question, she laughed and said, "We'll refund your pennies." The issue was never about the money. It was about getting a simple question answered and being treated with basic respect. Her comment was rude, dismissive, and completely unprofessional. To make matters even more frustrating, it took nearly 40 minutes before I was able to finish printing my documents. As someone who has worked with these same printers for years in a school setting, I know a typical paper jam can usually be cleared and the printer back up and running in just a few minutes. Waiting that long wouldn't have bothered me nearly as much if someone had communicated what was going on or treated me with courtesy. I understand that machines malfunction. What I don't understand is treating patrons with sarcasm and dismissiveness when they're simply asking for help. Customer service costs nothing, and unfortunately this experience was one of the rudest I've had at a library.
