I do not recommend Anytime Fitness Fairfax. Not enough space to do anything other than the machines or stationary movements with the dumbbells. (Burpees, jump lunges, anything plyometric like that is difficult to navigate, especially if people are on the TRX bands or a group class is going on.) Nothing special worth paying for. Better to do a workout at home! Even if it was a state of the art space with state of the art equipment... it couldn't justify the illegal billing that continues after the membership has been cancelled in accordance with the contract terms and state laws. My contract terms were 2/22/2019 through 2/21/2021. Provided written notification of cancellation in December 2020. The gym did not bill in April and May 2020 because the gym was closed due to COVID-19. And it's not legal to bill for services that aren't provided as advertised & mutually agreed upon. Now billing continued in March. They tried to unilaterally extend the contract to make up for when they were closed. It wasn't permissible to charge for services not provided in April & May 2020.... and it still isn't permissible now in March 2021. I did not agree to any changes in the membership agreement terms. If a member wants to freeze their membership due to a medical issue, the member needs to request it and the gym can agree to the freeze or dispute it and require a physical examination. The freeze is mutually agreed-upon by both the gym & the member. I never requested a freeze, and I was never asked to freeze the membership. I never authorized a freeze in the membership or any other changes to the original terms. I don't have access to workouts in the app as advertised and as I once did when the membership was active. The membership is now INACTIVE. But billing is as active as ever! So if you want to build and flex your skeletal muscles the traditional way with bodyweight and/or dumbbells, stay home! Check out the Jillian Michaels app! Or Body by Pauline! But if you want to spend your time and energy protecting your consumer rights after being charged illegally, Anytime Fitness is the gym for you! I have tremendous, sincere sympathy for the individuals and businesses affected by COVID-19. We all were affected in some way. But I never pledged to give to the Anytime Fitness charity. I can't afford to donate to you right now.

Also, they have really cultivated community, so I have become friendly with so many of the people who train alongside with me. This gym is a gift to yourself. I hope you check it out soon!

I had done exercise programs on and off (mostly off) over the years. I knew how important exercise was but I hated it. It was either boring, or it wasn't convenient, or it was hard to stay motivated. Today, I have never felt stronger or more confident. In fact, to my huge surprise, when my job was causing serious stress, all I could think was, "I NEED a workout today." I have never said that in my life! The coaches at UA are top-notch professionals. They take their work seriously, celebrate with you, and are encouraging. I look forward to seeing the coaches -- they are energetic, friendly, supportive, and have taught me a tremendous amount. This contributes greatly to me staying motivated to keep coming back and improving. Getting a new program each month also helps stave off the typical boredom of a "regular" gym. Something else that was unexpected but great nonetheless -- there is a wide variety among UA's members (age, gender, physical shape, natural ability, etc.). I am inspired by and feel comfortable around my fellow UA-ers b/c they each face their own challenges. I highly recommend you give UA a shot. (The also have a location in Sterling, VA.)

I walk in and see a huge part of the place "under construction." Keep in mind I have a fractured elbow and other injuries, and the only way for me to train abs right now is with an ab machine which is locked away in a room labeled "under construction." Why can't you just move the only ab machine out of that room and put it in the main area? Is it too heavy? Does it not have wheels? I genuinely don't get it. And every time you walk in, something is always out of service. The Smith machine has been broken since August and it's now the end of the semester. All this money, and the only thing they can do is tell you "you can't do this, you can't do that." At this point I'm seriously considering getting a membership at a private gym. I can't stand this place anymore. If you go to GMU or plan to, seriously consider the fact that the fitness facilities, not just the Aquatic Center, offer horrible service with pointless "safety" rules and regulations that make everyone's life harder. Hope this helps.

For CrossFit specifically, the energy is great, and you get to learn how to do the movements correctly, but at times (mainly when I first started), I've felt a bit judged and lost. It really depends on the instructor and the time you go. Hyrox, on the other hand, is great since you're usually in groups, which makes it feel more structured and supportive. All of the peak instructors I've had have been really friendly and motivating! The owner is also very welcoming and encourages bringing friends, offering a free trial class so you can see if it's a good fit. *Workouts: Classes usually have about 10-25 people, and you can go at your own pace. I typically go 4-6 times a week, switching up which classes I take. When I first started, the workouts felt tough, but over time, they've become much more manageable (results, yay!). Personally, I'm one of the most unmotivated people when working out alone, and they do a great job of encouraging you to show up at least once a week. The classes are a mix of bodyweight exercises, weights, and cardio, so there's always variety. *Pricing: I pay $159 a month for unlimited classes (~$6.65 a class if you go 6 days a week), which also includes 24/7 access and amenities like massage chairs and saunas. When I first started, I was on the $99 plan for two classes a week, which is a good option if you're not ready to commit fully. *Overall Thoughts: Halo Fitness is a great option for anyone looking for that little extra push. If you're new to CrossFit and have the time, I'd HIGHLY recommend going a bit early and asking questions so you don't injure yourself and don't feel so lost walking around, wondering what you need for the workout and which stations aren't taken.

Empower Fitness has everything I wasn't getting at Oak Marr: small, uncrowded classes (that you reserve a spot for); classes on holidays (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day...); workout routines that change regularly and often; and, most importantly, attentive instructors.
