She's been raving about this place since she started working out here so I decided to join her for a Saturday morning workout. On our way there, I was a bit anxious because I can't do CrossFit due to injuries. Previous gyms I have been to had always been pretty judgmental - "why would you come to a CrossFit gym if you don't do CrossFit?" "Oh.. so do you even workout?" - but this place is different. From the second I walked in, I knew I was going to like it. All of the coaches I met (Katie, Ryan, Bill, and Michael) were super friendly and greeted me right away. I told them I wasn't going to do the scheduled workout and they walked me around and showed me the equipment and which area was best to do my own thing. They had all of the equipment I needed (bikes, ergs/rowers, free weights, barbells, bands, etc.) and I had an awesome workout! If you're looking for treadmills and ellipticals, this isn't the place for you. But, if you want an awesome community and a fun place to workout, definitely check them out!

Which is why I love Orangetheory! Orangetheory is a boutique fitness gym for small group, heart-monitored workouts-- strength only and/or high intensity interval training that target both types of workouts in 60 minutes or less. It has an upbeat vibe and welcoming atmosphere. The coaches are terrific! They provide encouragement and instruction while timing each step in the workout. Best of all, for the nerds among us (myself included), you get a report at the end of your workout that shows how long you were in each heart zone. You can track your own progress! I highly recommend this methodology and the boutique style of fitness. I joined the one in Brownsboro and they got to know me and greet me by name now after 3 classes.

I have a lot of good things to say about this very unusual and busy YMCA in downtown Louisville and I can see why everybody loves it because the people working here are off-the-charts friendly. The guy at the front desk was a southern gentleman of the younger variety and he helped me get into the building and told me where everything is and he could sense that I was in a hurry so he hurried along his instructions. He got me in within just a few seconds of showing up. So he gets 10 stars out of five. However the locker system just doesn't work. I used a very similar system in Memphis the other day and having never used a punch-button combination locker before I followed the sign and it worked perfectly and there were no issues. Not so much in Louisville. The signs are complex and contradictory. There are not many of the signs so I didn't even see one before I started using it. An old man told me how to work it and I did what he said and it immediately locked my stuff in without me entering a combination. I could not get to my stuff so I had to go all the way down at which point the guy at the desk told me that I could have just called him and the old man on the way out told me that this happens all the time and not to feel bad. Well I don't mean to be a jerk but if this happens all the time then there's a problem! Change the system LOL. The reason why it happens all the time is because these things just don't work very well. It's that simple. He told me that I could park for just a dollar in the garage across the street which I couldn't find in traffic, which was awful on all the streets near this Y, and didn't feel like carrying all my stuff from a different block anyway so I just use street parking which is freaking $0.25 for eight minutes which is absolutely freaking ridiculous. This is not New York City and in fact a lot of New York City has much more affordable parking than that. Ew. The actual equipment is pretty good and they have some nice mats and various different things that I could use and then there are other things that could be improved. Such as the bikes. And there was the whole locker room drama because apparently there's a lot of theft around here or at least people think there is so I was told not to leave my stuff in the locker room even for a couple of minutes unattended. The janitor guy actually came into the shower to tell me to come back and get my stuff. Pulled the curtain back on me naked in there, soaping up, and almost made me slip over while simultaneously having a heart attack. I appreciated the consideration and even gave me a 3 minute lecture about how things can go missing even with just a few seconds and he's absolutely right, in theory. But considering that I only spent 90 minutes here and then half of that time was dealing with drama, it wasn't really as appreciated as he meant it to be. The drama of the parking situation. The drama of the lockers that don't work properly. The drama of the shower warning. If you consider all of that then I think you'll consider four stars for this gym to be pretty generous. Should really be less, but the southern young gentleman checking me in and sorting out my locker was so nice, he carries the 4 star rating. But basically no workout for me because of dramaaaa. Next time I'll use one in a different part of the city.

But the best part by FAR is that they have Les Mills classes! Body Pump classes changed my life, and I was so worried I wouldn't be able to find them when I moved to Louisville. Thank you downtown Y for offering the one class that turned me from the self-conscious, lifelong physical therapy patient I was to the confident fitness junkie I never thought I could be.

I REALLY enjoyed Orange Theory…read more I went in with some judgements, as I don't believe in cardio being a healthy low impact way to tire the body through working out. And I was blown away by the amount of strength training each class offers. The class was taught by Maddie. I appreciated that her coaching and cheering others on what intentional - instead of basic responses. They were individual to the person and I appreciate that. I enjoy being in a space where I'm valued as an individual and seen, instead of another number. The teacher and front desk gal where kind and not pushy about a membership. The membership costs where high, but it's hard to find any fitness workout nowadays that's under $120. More than likely, I plan to purchase classes instead of a membership.

With a combo of elements such as cardio, yoga, conditioning, and weights, I always leave feeling sore but in a good way. I started this year in January 2023 and try to go at least once a week. With my busy schedule, there are plenty of times to choose from. And while every class is essentially "different" depending on the instructor, I feel and look great once I enter the class and leave. Now, I'm not someone who sticks with a particular workout regimen, gyms are not my style. However, Barre3 is different. It is a combination of yoga, Pilates and barre founded by Sadie Lincoln. (Also a great listen on "How I Built This" on the origins of the company.) I've been coming here for 7 years. I've done community classes, I've bought class packages, I've done live steam and been in the studio. What I'm most thankful for is that this is a welcome, opening community. You are welcomed every time you come to the studio. Anyone is welcome to join. I've had friends join me who felt the body positivity during the class and felt welcomed. They frequently do community classes in locations like Paristown or at Work the Metal. I've enjoyed these classes too as an opportunity to share Barre3 with friends. In the spring/fall, they typically do class pack sales where I purchases classes so I can come and go as I can. I haven't done the monthly membership only because it is hard for me to go on workdays. The instructors (Abby, Mel, Kelly, Emily, Becca) have all been amazing. They have different styles and I workout something new every time. This community makes me happy and makes me feel like I belong. It has taken me so long to find a fitness community that does that for me. I'm so glad Barre3 has been here for 7 years, and cheers and gratitude to more.
