I joined because their prices were so incredibly cheap. If I remember, it was $24 a month. All of the treadmills have personal TV screens so you can watch a show to pass the time. It was never busy during the times I chose to work out, so I always had a good pick of machines. The bathrooms and locker areas were always cleaned and well-stocked. I had to drop my membership due to personal reasons, but if I were to ever join a gym again, ROC Fitness would be my first choice!

I've decided from past experiences, I wanted one where I could easily freeze my membership due to work travel. I wanted a gym in my area, that was less than 10 minutes away....well, I found it. I received in the mail, a flyer saying the membership fee of $29 was waived in January for Roc fitness. I chose today to go and check it out. It's a small gym, with a small equipped weight room. The weight room has set of circuit machines for upper and lower body. There's cardio machines upstairs. There's also a 14 lap walking track. They have shower rooms with lockers. Overall, it's a pretty nice place. Great price, too: $22 a month. There's a $5 locker fee if you decided to get a permanent locker, and they charge a one time fee for the usb key to program a workout. I like that idea, and am going to do that. The classes change per season. I am interested in the adagio class, and the zumba classes. The staff were very helpful, and they arrange for an orientation, after you join. There's a cafe with, from what I've heard, the best French fries in Raytown. I suppose the gym is supposed to counter act the calories in the French fries? . Edit: This place grows on you. The more I am there, the more I like it.

At Plunkett Fitness, their operating model is set to have a trainer available during operating hours to help members get the form and function down plus whatever support you need. The trainers customize the progression to meet your goals. I have found the atmosphere professional and encouraging and exactly what I was seeking. This is probably the most crowded, and absolutely the noisiest, exercise facility I've ever been…read morein. Because there was no question the music was playing at decibel levels that would actually harm your hearing, and the leader's shouting over it didn't help, I used an app to measure them at my 2nd class. From start to finish of the 45 min class, even though the music and the leader were less thundering, the decibels consistently measured at the "this WILL damage your hearing" levels. Add to that the jargon and the abbreviated commands they use, how fast you have jump on and off one machine to another, and how complicated the system is when it's a treadmill, rowing machine, and weights class, as a beginner I was completely lost and couldn't even understand what the instructor was saying. And that instructor kept pushing me to use weights that I knew were too heavy, even though I told her I'd been in physical therapy for an arm injury. There are NO "beginner"classes, or any other levels except "full speed ahead." The theory is that everyone will go at their own pace, which is not possible the way it's structured. The second instructor was much better, and it was "only" a treadmill class, but still the pace and the many variations every few minute were too challenging for me, a rank beginner, and someone just getting back into exercising. But ultimately, I would not continue working out in a place that would further damage my hearing.

When the contract was up they continued to bill and my son only received 9 out of the 12 lessons. Chad has yet to refund the money stating that I was suppose to fill out a form to stop the charges. I am confused how this is legal? Never the less I will be cancelling my entire membership at this point. Scamming people like this is HORRIBLE.

Because I didn't have the greatest time at the Cleaver YMCA. Firstly it's really hard to get to this part of town by road, because it's not really near any highways. Still I chose it, and decided to give it a try, even though I really like the gym at Olathe among others. Secondly the girl at the desk really liked me. Yes, in this case, it was a bad thing. She was very friendly and making a lot of chatter with me. I think perhaps she liked me a little bit too much, because she decided to go through the full process of figuring out if I was actually a YMCA member - even though she knew very well that I was. Only about 1 in 3 YMCAs actually go through this process, and when they do it takes between 1 and 5 minutes. However at the Cleaver YMCA, she took between 15 and 20 minutes because she kept messing up, taking as much time as possible, and remembering to have me sign a different part of the form, and thinking of more questions she wanted to ask me. I love friendly people but I have a tendency to be in a hurry. Here, I was, as usual so I didn't really appreciate it. Then there was the unfriendly person. An older man literally kicked me off a machine (the gym was nearly empty), which caused me to leave my workout gloves at the machine (I'd just taken them off ready for cardio). I never did remember that I left them there - until I was hours away from KC, on my way up to Des Moines. That was very disappointing. I called the Cleaver YMCA to ask about my gloves, and they said "we don't have them." Well, you do, but that's okay. Keep them. Another $10 down the drain. The gym itself was okay. Somewhere between a 3 and 4. A lot of the equipment was tailored to younger kids because this is definitely a family YMCA with the emphasis on family. I did get a pretty decent work out, but between the time that I was held up, the gloves, and the fact that is not a very extensive Y in terms of facilities, overall I cannot give more than a 3.
