I first came to AOC to take advantage of the live music. I didn't think much of their food. I was, after all, only really there for the jazz. But after trying their cuisine, this restaurant became more than just a place to watch a mini concert, glass of wine in hand. My favorite dish here is their carbonara, and I dare say, it may be the best carbonara I've ever had. The pasta is wonderfully creamy with generous bits of guanciale. I mean, just look at this beauty - it's glistening! As though this dish weren't creamy enough, it's topped with a half cracked egg, the yolk a vibrant orange. The idea here is that you incorporate the yolk into the pasta while it's still warm. This is a French restaurant after all, so I will warn you that the service here is quite European. From my experience sitting at the bar, the server won't fuss over you as you dine, and if you needed anything, you would have to flag him down. It's not an issue to me. I don't like feeling rushed at dinner. Just looking at the marvel that is this carbonara is a reminder that I should book another reservation here soon. read more

Decided to try an UES neighborhood bistro. Had the onion soup, salmon and kale salad, and the hanger steak. Paired each course with the recommended glass of wine (bonus $2 reduction for pairing). Food very tasty with salmon and steak cooked as requested. Only ding is that sections of the cheese on the onion soup were burnt and tasted as such. Enjoyed the chocolate mouse for desert. We were looking for a Happy Hour place when discovered this quaint little French Bistro. First time here and we didn't know what to expect. The atmosphere was very cool. The Happy Hour was from 4 to 6:30 and we made it just in time to get our order in The over all menu was very simple with a selection of French dishes the service was excellent and the prices were fair. This is NYC of course. Nothing is cheap. Haha!! We had to try almost everything on the Happy Hour menu offering at 50 % off the appetizers and they had their own drink specials. Most. Of the time when you order a red wine from the Happy Hour menu it is usually a two buck chuck wine and my wife said it was very nice. I had the French beer, which was a lager and also nice with a little bit of a sweet flair. We ordered the Tuna Tartare. It came with avocado topping and their own lightly salted waffle like potato chips. We also ordered the oysters and they were very tender with a great taste. Then came the French Onion soup that was amazing. Then we had to try the beef sliders which were packed with flavor. Both my wither and I have never had Ratatouille and we said let's try it and it was an another amazing dish. The service was excellent and informative of everything on the menu. The server started with announcing the special of the night which was a Mahi Mahi steak which sounded like another amazing dish, but there was no way we would have been able to finish. I recently went to AOC East for a casual diner and was charmed immediately by the interior and the ambiance of the restaurant! The menu has a good mix of options for all. I started with the French onion soup and it was tasty but nothing special but hey it's just French onion soup. Then I got the coq o vin and was not impressed. Something was off with the sauce but I cannot put my finger on it. The burger and fries were very good! I would recommend to anyone. Ended my time there with some crème brûlée which I don't think I would order again. It was lacking a depth of flavor. Service was friendly and helpful. One of the best carbonaras I have had in the city, which is interesting because this isn't really an Italian place. Really enjoyed my meal here. We came on a Friday with a reservation at 6:30pm for 5 of us and were seated immediately. The space is relatively small, but has a great ambiance and would be a perfect date night. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. I had the burger and fries, which was cooked very well (honestly the photo doesn't do it justice). The inside of the place is very small and narrow but it is so cute and such a good cozy vibe! The food on the other hand was honestly just okay and enough to make me not want to come back, I'd come back for a glass of wine at the bar. The burger was the best part of our meal, it was cooked really well and seasoned great. The fries were also salted enough and crispy like you would like. The French onion soup was decent, it was brothier than a normal French onion soup and simple in a good way. They do it the way with bread in the bottom. The coq au vin was not good at all, my least favorite dish, the sauce tasted from a jar, the noodles felt they were not made in house, and the chicken was extremely dry. The Créme Brûlée was also just meh, it tasted like it was premade and was sitting for a bit, no depth of flavor and Brûlée was defintely pre done beforehand. read more

Came here to meet up with a friend for brunch. We chose to sit outside as it was still nice and warm out. Did not realize someone definitely decided to relieve themselves (probably a homeless) in their outdoor seating area and it smelled. There was also a ton of flies swarming the area because of said piss. We tried our best and sat at a table that was least affected by this mishap. AOC East seems a lot better when you're coming here for wine or dinner. Brunch was essentially not that appealing. We both had too much to drink the night before, so we both did not order any wine, although that was my intent when I made the reservation a few days prior. I ended up ordering their french toast, which came with mixed fruits. The french toast looked like something I could make myself at home. The fruits were good and tasted fresh surprisingly. My friend got a reservation for us at 7:30 on a Wednesday. The place was packed, especially the bar area. Frankly, the place is super loud. A bit too loud for a deep conversation. But any annoyance we had with the noise was assuaged by the goodness of the food. We went all vegetarian and didn't miss any meat. The risotto was divine, and I was pleasantly surprised by the ratatouille and Brussels sprouts. Only one rosé by the glass, but it was solid. This restaurant is a bit pricey considering the plates are small and quality is okay but I just went for a glass of wine and some small bites, so would need to try more things in the menu to make a better judgment. They have tablets with the menu so you can see pictures and descriptions of each item. First I ordered a glass of BEAUJOLAIS which I quite liked, light body and fruity, good for some appetizers. Then, I ordered the FOIE GRAS TERRINE that comes with a little salad, and a little piece of toasted bread. The flavor of the foie gras was actually quite good and the portion is big, they could just give more bread since the amount of foie gras is actually bigger. The RATATOUILLE was a bit dissapointing, it needed more flavor and was a bit small . It comes with some Crostini to pair. This is a cozy enough place with the feel if not exactly the look of a bistro. And the food is as the French say, "correct". But I won't be going back. I had a coq au vin, decent enough, if disconcertingly buried in tagliatelle. With this, as I recall, I had a Beaujolais, $16, and then a creme brulee, $13 (actually more than it appears to be just now). But when I got the bill, the wine was $14 and the creme brulee, $17 (working from memory, but each was $1 more than on the menu). When I pointed this out to my server, was he shocked? Apologetic? Not at all. He simply muttered something about "how systems are" and went to fix it. I didn't find this answer reassuring, since it implied that the price had been set that way in the system and anyone who didn't notice would simply pay the higher price. Would I tell you not to go here? Not necessarily. It's not all that expensive and it's simply enough. But I would suggest you snap each line item before you order and then be sure you are charged what you originally saw. Me, I won't be going back. Have passed here so many times and seen live music playing, but finally came by thanks to the Seated app! The food was great, and our server was super sweet. Will definitely be coming back. Came here on a Tuesday around 9PM. It was very laid back, with plenty of open seats. This was near the end of October, and they definitely decorated for the spooky season. In general the decor is cute. They have world maps on the ceiling, and I noticed they had a small Eiffel Tower pinned upside down over France on this map. Fairy lights hang from the ceiling toward the front, and retro artwork hangs on the walls. I finally tried escargot here and was amazed at how much I liked it. The sauce was flavorful and buttery, and the escargot itself was very soft. For anyone who's scared to try it, don't be! If you didn't tell me what the dish was, I would have never guessed. The texture is nothing like you would expect, and the snails are mostly a vehicle for the delicious sauce. I enjoyed that there was a suggested wine pairing for every dish on the menu. It made ordering a drink that complements your meal really easy. The pork buns were good and tender, but I was definitely unsure of why they would serve this here. I wish there was more sauce though. We got the lamb burger from the menu. My only qualm was that we were not asked how we wanted it done, and it was pretty rare. The meat was super flavorful and juicy though. What better than to have a French place right by you? If you ever want good French food in a classic, rustic style restaurant, try AOC East. They don't have beouf bourguignon but they have other French classics like duck confit, duck magret, coq au vin, ratatouille, foie gras, and escargot. I think we went at like 5:30 or 6 on a weeknight and there was live music and not a lot of people. So it was perfect. I got the vegetable couscous and A got the burger. The couscous was amazing! They give you a mound of couscous and sauce with vegetables in it plus a bowl of it, so it's basically double portions - you can take the rest home. I don't know what they did to it but it was very good, very salty, but very good. All the vegetables were soft and easy to eat. The couscous was the best part I think and I wish there was more of it. A said his burger was good, but it's a burger so he always says its good. We decided to get lava cake for dessert. And it was perfect. The chocolate oozed out as its supposed to. I feel lava cake is hard to nail. I've gone to places where the lava cook was fully cooked so there was no melted chocolate inside. But when places get it right it's really the most amazing thing. Service was great. The waiter was also the host and since it wasn't too busy, he was able to be attentive and answer any questions we had. I can see why this place is so popular. The food is good and the ambience is charming. We also had brunch here too and that did not disappoint. Go for brunch, lunch, dinner, or even just for a drink. The ratatouille had good flavor but I wish the vegetables were more thinly cut. I had the calamari and risotto which were both delicious. I was also pleasantly surprised to see (two) Pet Nats on the wine list. Unfortunately, our dining was made less pleasant by the group of women sitting next to us--they were wholly unaware of how loud they were, were rude to the staff and not thank them for anything...they looked like a group from Real Housewives, and unfortunately, detracted from an otherwise delicious experience. AOC has outstanding French food, my favorite French restaurant Upper East Side, now with a fantastic, safe outside seating area as well as their amazing inside dining space. On my recent visit to get a quick escargot and oysters, I ended up staying longer than expected, ordering more food (and wine) than planned as I felt so relaxed and temporarily brought back to "normalcy" with the welcoming ambiance we have missed for way too long. Much needed! Ambiance. The outside seating area is simple and airy, great in that the clear enclosed area allows you to see outside, a couple trees and buildings above. Tables are distanced, with space heaters above. Inside, while having limited capacity for safety, allows for dining with friends or dates with stringed lights, sofas and a charming ambiance. Safety. They take safety seriously, limiting capacity, distancing tables, temperature checking and sanitizing between customers, with a giant container of sanitizer on the bar area for staff to use). Food and drinks. Everything was incredible. The Bordeaux wine and old fashioned were both great. And the many dishes which have been difficult to find over the past year- Raw oysters, escargot, foix gras, tuna tar tar- were all mouthwatering fantastic. They spaced the items perfectly. Service. The hostess, server Cabrel and manager Ayoub were attentive, friendly and accommodating, moving from outside to inside when space allowed. The outstanding food, service and ambiance all made for a really wonderful dinner and much needed night of "normalcy." Highly recommend for dinner and wine with friends, family or a date. read more

Ate there twice this week. On Wed, had a special of striped bass filet, served over a terrific veggie risotto, it was top shelf. On Fri, had the pork chop special, served with a great lemon/white sauce, mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus--excellent! They also have one of the best burgers on the UES with terrific fries. I love wine, and they have the best wine list at the best prices in this hood. I also love their fried oyster sliders. What a complete and utter disappointment, almost on every level. For Valentine's Day I chose AOC East to take Jayson. Our tradition for the last 15 years, for birthdays, anniversaries and Valentine's Day, is that I choose the restaurant to surprise Jayson. And, until last night, we never had a miss. The main reason I chose AOC is that Jayson loves coq au vin. It's not the easiest dish to find at restaurants, mainly because it takes time to cook. Many places will offer it as a special, once a week. But AOC, much like Amelie in the Village (which we love) serves it nightly. And the reviews for AOC's coq au vin were all raves. After our night, I'm guessing the raves were from relatives. The coq au vin was good. The problem is, just about everything else really fell WAY below the mark. First, when we arrived the restaurant was not overly busy (yet). We got seated right away at a little table crammed in towards the back. It took probably 15 minutes or so before anyone came over to our table. Yet, the table behind us, which arrived 10 minutes after us, were taken care of right away, with bread and beverages. I had to get up to ask someone finally to bring us bread (took another 10 minutes) and to come over to us. That also seemed to set the tone for the rest of the night. It's not like it's a huge restaurant. It's actually quite small, which was another reason I chose it. Maybe because we didn't order liquor (we don't drink) that we were to feel invisible and left to constantly wait or seek out the server. We started with oysters (for me, because I am obsessed with oysters), french onion soup and the flan foie gras (for Jayson). The oysters horrible. Yikes. I didn't mean that. I meant they were horrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible! The oysters were extremely lackluster and not shucked very well. I kept getting bits of shell and crud with each one. And they were the very low end of the oyster chain (i.e., the cheap, blah kind that restaurants like to serve for their $1 happy hour, even though it wasn't happy hour.) The onion soup was rather disappointing and a bit rancid tasting. They prepared it with some kind of parsley seasoning that made it taste like the stove top stuffing you'd eat on Thanksgiving. Uck! I don't eat stuffing then, and I certainly don't want my onion soup tasting like it now. I also wish they hadn't served us the bread, as it turned out to be rather hard and stale. The mains are where they scored better on. Jayson's coq au vin was a hit. He found the choice to serve it with pasta to be an innovative twist. I had the filet mignon special, with potatoes au gratin and stringbeans served with a peppercorn sauce. It was good. Not exceptional. But good. The sauce was delicious, but that's not what I paid $36 for. Plus it was for the string beans. The potatoes au gratin were overcooked and tasted a bit like they were quickly put into a microwave before serving. I couldn't really make my way through them. Overall, this wasn't a great meal or a great Valentine's dinner by any means. It certainly wasn't worth $200 (with no alcohol). Maybe that was our mistake. Perhaps the key to finding this place enjoyable, and the food and service tolerable, is to get liquored up. Between the extremely disappointing appetizers, the terrible service and everything else, it ruined whatever delight we had from the mains. I should also add that when we got home, Jayson started feeling queasy and his stomach was upset. He thinks it had to do with the foie gras. The only saving grace is that after 15 years, we are able to find the silver lining, which is that it didn't ruin the day itself for us, because that's what love is about. And, I can tell you this, our feelings for this place were anything but love. read more
