I was a loyal customer at Apex for five years until today. I asked Bob to check my engine light and when he saw that I had gotten my oil changed somewhere else, he rescinded his offer to let me borrow a loaner for my tire change scheduled for next week. He then proceeded to aggressively ream me out for letting another mechanic change my oil. It was very controlling and creepy. His volatile and controlling behavior was shocking and made me hope that he does not treat his loved ones and his employees in this abusive way. I choose self preservation and am staying far away from this guy. Hope he finds some help. He certainly can't seem to keep his demons at bay. read more

Bob seems to be bipolar. One day he's fine, the next time he refuses to work on your car because you're "not on board" with his opinion of how your car should be maintained. Bob is a good mechanic (he was taught by my now deceased husband)there is no denying that but there is much more to customer service than being good at repairs. he actually states this on his site and says HE is so much more than that. That fact is only true until he doesn't agree with what you are saying, doesn't want to be bothered to talk to you and/or is annoyed with your seeking information. He has a very short and bad temper and thinks nothing of being rude and nasty as I just found out. I have been bringing my car to him for years out of a sense of loyalty but that ends today. I hope he doesn't talk to his mother or other elderly customers like myself the way he spoke with me today because I was seeking information about the work he had recently done on my car that he did not want to be bothered to give. The nonprofit I work at owns four vehicles. They get driven a lot by a bunch of different drivers, many of whom are beginner drivers, so these cars are abused in a way that your typical family sedan isn't. Apex handles all maintenance and repairs for all of our vehicles, and we couldn't be happier with their work. I appreciate that they take the time to explain their repairs and let me know what areas might need maintenance in the future so I'm not caught off guard when I need to replace the brakes, for example. I've been going to Apex for over seven years, and in that time they've maintained our new cars and helped us extend the life of some cars on their last legs, and I've always been impressed by their work. read more

Excellent service!!! I was happily surprised, after my lights were not working when visiting GB from Agawam, to get immediate friendly service from Bob, the owner. It was late afternoon, and I expected a long wait and rushed service, if any. Bob immediately looked at my car and found the problem (dirty windshield kept my auto lights from working...phew!). He then pointed out that they weren't on the brightest level and offered to check my oil and engine after thinking my engine starting was louder than normal. Fortunately he noticed nothing wrong. But it was a refreshing surprise having the owner of an auto repair shop be so generous with his time, especially considering he knew I wasn't from the area, so wouldn't have them do the work. I got a flat because I had a staple in my tire. I called around around for quotes on how much it would cost to repair the flat. Most places were saying between $25 and $40. The guy who answered the phone at Apex said it would cost between $10 and $15. I also asked him if Apex would honor the road Sonsio protection hazard insurance that I purchased when I bought a new set of tires through Goodyear 6 months ago. He said no, but I still went here because they would be the cheapest and no other places said they would honor the insurance. I get to the shop, they repair the tire quickly, and the same guy who I talked to on the phone tells me it will be $29. I asked him again if this repair would be covered under my Sonsio insurance, and I show him my receipt for further clarification on my warrenty. He insists that they don't provide coverage for this insurance, and is getting agitated. He tells me I should just pay now and send them the receipt and ask them for a refund. I know that'll never happen, so I calmly ask him one more time if they would repair this for free, because I looked up authorized coverage providers and Apex was on the list. He says no. I say "okay, well I'll just pay for it, but you told me on the phone that it would cost between 10 and 15 dollars" He gets very agitated and then says, "Tell you what. Name whatever price you want to pay, in cash, and do me a favor and never come here again." I pay him $15, cash, and walk out. tl;dr: To repair a flat tire, he charged me double what he quoted on the phone 45 minutes earlier, and when I told him he quoted me a much lower price on the phone, he yelled at me to "never come back here again." Watch out. I guess they don't want me coming back because they don't want intelligent people coming in who can think for themselves and realize when they're being ripped off. read more

Great service! I needed a simple tire repair done. They were more than happy to do it and it was done on time and with a fair price.

I definitely will never be coming back. Perhaps I'm bias and over the top, but I brought my car here to get inspected and I would've rather spent 35$(or wasted) to get punched in my face. First go around I was failed because he didn't like the way my exhaust sounded, the tires could've been better and he thought my rocker panel looked a little rusty so he took it upon himself to poke a hole in that rust himself. Thanks, asshole! Whatever, ya know? I get the stuff fixed that needs it and I think, let's go back and not waste the 35$ after all because I have properly fixed the things that needed fixing. I watch someone go under my car and start knocking. What the fuck do you know he's now decided the rest of the rust under my car which he didn't bother to mention the first time was too much and failed me again. What the fuck! So I politely leave and go to my regular mechanic whom I explain my situation to, and he says "oh no, you didn't go to apex did you?" I knew then that I had fucked up. He proceeded to tell me that while on every technicality apex is allowed to do what they do, it's bullshit. I don't know what their usual prices and quality are like but from my experience I wouldn't want to stand around long enough to ask. read more

We were in Great Barrington to ski, and the driver's side windshield wiper broke. My husband was concerned about tightening it too much, and thought there might be something else wrong. We were staying in walking distance from Apex, so we drove over, prepared to leave the car and walk back to our motel. Instead, they looked at it right away, tightened it up, and put on a much needed rear wiper. It cost all of $10. I'm pretty sure that was for the rear wiper only. They saved our day, and now we know where to go if we ever have other car trouble in the area. Very nice people, very clean shop and office, and two very cute Papillons to pet. read more

I did my yearly car inspection here about a week ago. One of the license plate lights was out, so I had them replace it. Today I noticed that the light had fallen out and was hanging by a wire. When I took a closer look, I saw that one of the pastic tabs had broken and that it had been held in place for the last week with a little loop of scotch tape. The car is relatively old (2000) and I'm not terribly surprised or upset that the light cover had been broken... I was disturbed, however, that the mechanic had covered up the problem (and covered it up so inexpertly--scotch tape?! Really!?). I went back to show it to the shop's owner (Bob?). He explained to me that the plastic is old and suggested that the fact the car needed a wash points to the problem (that the rear of the car hadn't been kept in better shape). When I said that I don't have a problem with the fact it broke, but rather the fact that his employee covered it up, Bob shrugged it off and said that he wasn't surprised since this is the sort of thing customers are unreasonable & yell about. He did give me a free replacement bulb for the other light (which had gone out in the intervening week)--but his nonchalance about the coverup means that I will never go back there. read more

When I deal with a merchant, any merchant, the most important thing I look for is TRUST. Particularly, when the merchant knows more than I do. Take car service. Recently, I brought my car to Bob at Apex with a noise issue related to braking. He quickly diagnosed my need to replace the rear brakes. Before I had a chance to rue the unexpected expense he asked how many miles I had driven and then informed me the brakes were still under warranty and I should go back to the dealer and have them replaced at no charge. I want to acknowledge first, that Bob has in the past, been very kind to me, I trusted him and gladly recommended Apex. My last visit there was extremely disconcerting, however. I don't really know what most people generally do when it comes to car care, but I am not one to take my car to the same facility always... I've found basic maintenance - oil changes, brake pads, etc. done less expensively, well, and courteously at other places friends and neighbors have recommended. To me it goes without saying that we would do such things - freely make choices what to do and where we go, particularly when it comes to budgeting. When it's extensive work that is needed, I think I am indeed like most, really nervous about choosing where to go. Well, back to Apex - when I went to see them recently for an issue I've been having for a little while now, Bob was so terribly offended that I hadn't been there in what I actually hadn't realized was over 2 years; he was angry and questioned why I was coming in given that he "saw" somewhere (online?) that I had my car looked at elsewhere 2 weeks earlier... I did not understand his anger or how he would even know this (private?) information. I told him that what I had done 2 weeks earlier were the car's brakes and nothing to do with the matter I was seeing him about, but that I would willingly leave if that's what he prefered. He said they would look at the car, went himself to the garage, and then came in after a while saying that my car needed some things addressed right then and there... When I told him that I was sorry, that I really couldn't have anything done that day, he again raised his voice in anger. There was another customer there, it was embarrassing, although I held my ground and didn't allow him to feel he at all had the upperhand... The fact also, that he would somehow know and mention my having gone elsewhere was wrong, controlling (and honestly, a bit creepy). I know Bob can be much, much better than this and I have always felt that complaints on venus like these are often unfair and unkind... He offended me though, treating me as though I was slyly trying to get away with something(?) and as if I had somehow cheated him for the past 2 years. KL read more

I have also mostly had (relatively) minor service, but they have been very good about going the extra mile--vacuuming out the car, giving good advice about what else needs to be serviced (and what doesn't!), and even replacing a valve stem for free once. They are my go-to shop for anything short of a transmission problem, and I would definitely consider trying them for major work as well. read more

I recently bought a used 2009 Nissan Altima from this place. When I got this car, the guys at apex assured me this car was in great condition and that I was really getting a great deal. they had recently replaced the tires, changed the oil, and done a few other small things but I was excited that they were so confident in this car. About a week after purchasing the car, while going about 50 mph, a noise began ringing from my hood. It sounded like a combination of air getting sucked through a hole and two pieces of metal hitting eachother. There were no lights coming on my dashboard and no other red flags, so I decided to wait a few days before being concerned. Around the same time, I noticed my air conditioner was pumping out HOT HOT air. I couldnt even use it. A few days after this, while at a doctors appointment an hour from my home, my battery died. A car fresh out of Apex automotive, and they couldn't even check the battery? Whatever. I called AAA and a man came to jump start my car. When he looked at my battery, his first question was "Who installed this? It looks like whoever put this in your car was trying to prank you". Once my car was running, I brought it to auto zone in Torrington to buy a new battery and have them replace it for me. They tested my new battery, and again, a second mechanic says to me "Whoever put this battery in your car had no idea what they were doing." He informed me that my battery actually wasn't dead, it was just put in so incorrectly that it was losing connection, causing my car to not start. At this point I made an appointment with my regular mechanic to take an overall look at the vehicle. I go to college in South Carolina and needed to make sure this vehicle was prepared for an 800 mile trip. Over $1000 in repairs later, this car is FINALLY in the condition it should have been when first sold to me. A major component of my air conditioner was broken, and that alone was $800. The noise in the front of my car was a rod/pole of some sort that, shocker, was also broken. That was another $250, plus the labor fees of my AMAZING mechanic. (Expert Auto in Torrington- The most reliable mechanic I have ever been to). While I did have a 30 day warranty on my car with Apex, I would much rather spend the money on a TRUSTED, RELIABLE mechanic to fix my car then the potheads at Apex automotive who couldn't even correctly install the battery. They were smoking weed in the garage the entire time I was waiting for them to register it, no wonder why it took them over a week to put on new tires and couldn't even sell a fully functioning car. SAVE YOUR MONEY. GO SOMEWHERE RELIABLE. and BRING SOMEONE WITH YOU WHO KNOWS ABOUT CARS WHEN PURCHASING. Again, if you need a reliable, EDUCATED, and genuine mechanic, go check out Mark and his guys over at Expert Auto on East Main Street in Torrington! I've never had to wait more than a day for them to fix any issues on cars I've owned, and they're not gonna sell you a piece of shit like Mike and the men at Apex did to me!! read more

I will NEVER bring my car back to this establishment. My first experience at Apex was a great one, so when I needed my vehicle serviced again, I brought it to them, in hopes I would be in good hands. I was SOOOOO wrong!! First off, they completely over charged me about 3x over, and I did not find this out until I did a little investigating after I had my work done. That was my fault for trusting that they would be honest with their prices. Second, I brought my vehicle home and it LITERALLY was a clunker! When I brought it in, it was not making any noise. So, I brought it back the next day, and Bob, the owner proceeded to tell me that I needed a whole new other job done to my vehicle that would run me around 5 or 6 hundred dollars. Now, I had JUST spent a little over $700 getting it fixed. So, this time, I went and got a second opinion, and come to find out, a part they installed was loose, which was creating the clunking noise. I brought it back AGAIN the next morning. I pointed out the part that was rattling. And asked them to tighten it. He flat out told me, i was wrong, and it was normal. I got furious. He told me, the only way to make the clunking noise go away was to put in a new part ( that has been, and still is working fine!) And spend another 5 /6 hundred dollars. They wouldn't tighten the loose piece or anything. Bob seems to me like the type of owner who is great and accommodating with men, but when it comes to women, he tries to swindle what he can. They were incredibly helpful not only with my car, but with logistics of holding the car while I bought a new car, looking up NYS information for me, and securing a buyer for the car. Was sad to find out that this little shop is untrustworthy. Had a small brake job that needed to be done and didn't want to drive all the way to our normal mechanic 40 minutes away. Place was recommends too! In the end wanted to replace brakes, rotors, calipers (really), air filter and oh yeah for kicks the battery! Over $1700.00. Just a warning. But I will be driving the extra minutes from now on to be with our mechanic who said I only needed brakes and rotors. read more

Dropped my truck off for front brake line fix, obviously on the spot as the brake line went, Apex had fixed various things in the past, so i thought it was the right place to bring it to. Apparently not. Owner said he could not get to it for over a week so i went to get it to bring elsewhere. The 5 bay garage had only one car on the lift btw. I asked Bob how much it would cost for apex to fix the front brake if i waited until he had time. He said 1200 to 1500 dollars. When i found out the job with labor and parts would be less than 300, i asked why he put the high price on it. Said he did not know . Was the unfair price because he did not want to do the job? He replied, well, yes ,that was part of the reason he put the high price on it. When i asked, why was he not simply honest and say he could not or would not do it? He had no answer. He claimed 'that is the Apex price because thats the way we do things'. Its a hot day, i guess it was to much trouble to manifest the right BS as he has in the past. Takes a while to catch on i guess. Really? Charge 3-5 x more than anyone else and see if you can get away with it? So, if he is willing to steal from me for being inconvenienced to work, what will he do for you?
