This review is mostly about Stephen Hyon, but, naturally his actions reflect on his employer too. I had a such a nightmarish experience with him that I nearly developed fear of dentists. For people who do not want to read the rest of the review, the synopsis is that, Hyon is by far the worst dentist I have seen or heard of. Stay away from him. The rest of the staff is not bad, especially Dr. Jasminka Kopanja, she is actually pretty nice (hence the second star)
Here is the longer version, I made a huge mistake and allowed Hyon to operate on several teeth at the same time. I had no pain at all, but he claimed that he sees signs of decay so I trusted him. While he was operating I felt a lot of pain, I informed him, but did not ask him to stop since I have a pretty high pain tolerance. That was perhaps a warning sign that my poor nerves were able give despite having been anesthetized. After that, the nightmare begun, I had the worst tooth pain I experienced in my entire life in every teeth he worked on. As I said, I have normally a very high pain tolerance, but this pain was murdering me. Also, without asking for permission or telling me what he is doing, he had drilled away so much of one tooth that I nearly did not have any tooth left (I had no other option but a crown). After enduring weeks of excruciating pain, as he claimed that it is normal to have pain for 1-2 weeks, I wanted him to fix what he did. I was told that I need a root canal to stop the pain but I told him that I dont want to pay the extra charges as the need arose only after what he did to my teeth. He tried being smart and asked why had the tooth operated if I did not have pain before, and I reminded him that I had come to the clinic just for a cleaning and general checkup, and I allowed him to do the fillings not to stop any pain, but just based on his "professional advice". His disrespectful tone got much worse after my answer; he started throwing tantrums and, just before hanging up on me, told me that he will repay all my expenses I had in his clinic, and I can find another dentist to help me. Not surprisingly, that did not happen, as apparently he has no idea about and no say in the refund policies of the clinic is working in (or perhaps he just did not want to give back the money he took from me) I am not even sure that I was refunded the $60-70, "dental hygiene consultation" fee he charged after this extremely helpful conversation:
Hyon: Do you floss?
I: Not always
Hyon: Do you know that flossing is important?
I: Yes
Apparently he thought the insurance would pay it and I would not even notice it. Very ethical, very professional.
Anyway, this event happened almost 2 years ago so I might have not remembered all the details, but the general idea is crystal clear. Thanks to Dr. Kopanja's efforts (she had to remove the fillings he did, and put new ones in, and she was very friendly and professional) and excellent work from a great dentist (Dr Yavuz Takaz, he is in Turkey unfortunately) I am OK now, but I started clenching my teeth after the trauma I suffered and I still do that. So, I strongly urge you to reconsider if you plan to see him, he may first look nice, but he may also cause you excruciating pain, treat in a very rude, unprofessional, immature manner, and try to charge you/your insurance company for a few words (Also, don't let him ask you "how are you?", he may charge you for a "physical/psychological evaluation" fee).
