Small quaint cemetery tucked away in a residential dead end. I'm so jealous of the next door…read moreneighbors who get to have this gem right by them. Home to 15 of Cary's past Mayors including Mayor Bond for whom Bond Park is named after, the most notable persons (in my opinion) buried here are Alfred "Buck" Jones who donated land and a building for the first school for black children in Cary and Rufus jones who donated the land for Hillcrest Cemetery and helped establish the beautiful town of Cary. I feel like this place can be taken care of a bit more post rain and I wish the community in this neighborhood felt compelled to do so even if the city doesn't. Rest peacefully to all who are laid to rest here.

Maynard, Harrison, Bond, Walker, Guess, Matthews, Mayton . . . anyone living in Cary for any length…read moreof time is probably familiar with the names. Aside from seeing those names on the roads and some buildings, I never really had made a connection to the people. Then, I came across Hillcrest Cemetery. Located at the end of Page road, at the top of a small hill, large trees shade the entrance. It's almost like entering an estate. Hillcrest is a classic cemetery, and the friends of Page-Walker have done a nice job maintaining it. There are large cedar trees in the front part, the homes backing up to the grounds blend into the surroundings. The tombstones are a mix of modern and nearly monolithic. Families have large plots, often set off by stones or brick, and the families whose names are associated with Cary sometimes have large markers and surprisingly some have restrained, low-key markers. The obelisk on the Maynard grave is easily the most visible on the entire property. Not all the burials here are from the last century, there are recent burials as well. There was one grave by itself on the other side of the road in back, H. Young's, for whom the Community Center is named. It was one of the few more modern stones. There is a self-guided tour map/brochure as you come in, useful for locating, at least in a general sense, the graves of Cary's notable citizens. There are also interesting facts about the grounds and people buried here who may not have a street or building named after them, but may have had some role in Cary's history. It's not a big cemetery, so it's easily walkable. It's an interesting way for recent newcomers to the area to connect with Cary's history.

I can't begin to thank the staff of Knotts Funeral Service enough for their sensitivity,…read moreprofessionalism, and general overall friendliness during this painful period in my life. I had to fly out from California after my brother died in late March. Heather, over at the Crisis Center of the Chapel Hill Police Department, kindly provided me with a list of funeral homes. While everyone was professional, they were also almost twice as much as Knotts. And while I know it might appear unseemly to some to consider costs when it comes to planning the death of a loved one, it was less about the cost of cremating my brother than the way cremation was presented. Each person I spoke with at Knotts took their time with me. I never felt rushed nor did I feel like I was just a potential sale (as I did at a few of the others). While I will probably not need their services again, I can't recommend them highly enough. They are a small, family-owned business and it showed in every aspect of the process. Thanks, everyone. You made the pain a little more bearable for me and I hope others read this review and take my advice and use your services.
