An excellent experience here at this surgical center! Understandably Stressed about having a needle stuck in my neck, honestly it was so easy! My nurse, Annette was a doll! Made me feel very comfortable! My pain management doctor, Dr. Katuzian from Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Specialists, was very kind and explained the epidural procedure and really put my heart at ease! He actually went in with the needle/tiny catheter in my middle upper back and moved it up to the areas in my neck (somewhere between C- 4 and T-1) where the problems are. The anesthesiologist Lori? Laura? She was wonderful! Friendly! Great personality! Explained everything she was doing and made me feel very comfortable. And my recovery nurse was also a sweetheart! I was shocked and…read moreappalled to be berated by Cabaret who would lecture me about what "real pain was" telling me "people in wheelchairs" knew "real pain" - the funniest part is that my mom's twin is a quadriplegic so telling me that people in wheelchairs are the only ones with real pain was rich coming from Cabaret.... I started bringing a family member with me at all times to appointments just because the way he spoke to me was so unprofessional, and they all agreed witnessed how he would berate, speak down to and invalidate anything I said, because to Cabaret since I didn't have a physical handicap, my pain wasn't valid to him - even though I had several autoimmune conditions with chronic pain as well as severe rheumatoid arthritis and degenerative disc conditions... After ~2 years of this I stopped seeing him altogether: I couldn't deal with graveling for help for months and receiving treatment here or there while enduring being talked to and treated in such a horrible way. I actually gave up on pain management docs for ~8 years because of experiences here... I powered through pain for so long I ended up with an TLIF spinal fusion with disc replacement due to severe central canal stenosis after going to ER for back pain, I was put in an ambulance for an emergency spinal surgery on a Sunday to prevent paralysis (I was riding my motorcycle through the pain of severe central canal stenosis that required ambulatory transfer and emergency spinal fusion surgery on a Sunday). I was fortunate to finally receive compassionate care from both a neurosurgeon and pain management doctor as recovered (located in Ventura). About a year after my spinal fusion: I needed a facet block and MBB RFA due to nerve pain that never resolved after the surgery. My quality of life is so much better - I feel like I am part of the living again. I hate medications and the side effects of them, but sometimes they are necessary, and sometimes injections or surgical procedures are also necessary for relief. Thankfully, now I see physicians who are compassionate and listen to both visible and invisible pain and will work to find the root cause of it - all while treating me with decency, like I'm a human being.

This surgery was the easiest I have ever had. Surgery was at 2:30 and at 4:30 I woke up, got dressed, and went home. The next two days I used crutches just to be sure, but my knee already felt better than it did before the surgery. Virtually no pain after the procedure. Now six days after, my knee feels like I am 20 years old again. Dr. Ballard checked in with me to make sure I am doing OK, which I really appreciated. When I went in for my results, the doctor's assistant didn't even know I had already completed the MRI -- she wasn't sure why I was there. I had to explain my back issues all over again, and then she said I needed an X-ray. I told her I came in for my MRI results, and she seemed surprised and asked who referred me. I explained it was the Oxnard office. She then said, "The doctor likes to have both." This left me confused, because my understanding is that an MRI usually provides more than enough detail. On top of that, I had just paid nearly $600 for the MRI. When I asked if my insurance would cover the X-ray, she replied, "They should." My complaint is this: patients need to be informed up front if additional tests are being recommended and whether those tests might require another copay or out-of-pocket costs. It shouldn't just be assumed that insurance will cover it. If the doctor wants both MRI and X-ray, that's fine -- but patients should be given the choice and a clear explanation, especially when significant costs are involved. On top of that, I have been trying to get in touch with the office manager, leaving several voicemails, and still have not received a call back. I think patients should always have the right to seek a second opinion and not just be expected to go along with what one doctor says. Extra tests mean extra money to the office, and we deserve transparency and options before being billed.

The biggest issue is the staff. Whenever we need paperwork, medical records, a referral, or really any type of request, we are made to feel as though we are bothering them. There seems to be very little urgency or concern, and it routinely takes days just to get a response. The office experience isn't much better. Every time we have had an appointment, we have waited at least an hour in a small, uncomfortable waiting room with the television blasting soap operas or other programming at a volume that makes an already unpleasant wait even worse. Even more surprising for an orthopedic practice, the restroom is not conveniently located inside the office. Patients have to go out the door and down an outdoor hallway to use it. Many of the people coming to an orthopedist are dealing with broken bones, serious injuries, pain, walkers, crutches, or limited mobility. You would expect an orthopedic office to be designed with those patients in mind. Our biggest concern, though, is simply the overall lack of care and compassion we have felt from the office staff. When people are dealing with injuries and pain, a little kindness, responsiveness, and understanding go a long way. Dr. Calderone may be a good doctor, but in our experience, he needs a more caring and responsive staff and an office environment that better accommodates orthopedic patients.
