I just love this office! The staff here are wonderful!! Dr. Tourje is also wonderful! I had to get a shoulder injection this visit and she did a great job! Yes it hurt but very manageable! She took her time, guided me with my breathing and knew just when to go further. Ugh! Misting a deep pressure kind of pain but I was fine. I haven't even been to the office and Valerie in new patient administration refused to make me an appointment, she has all my files, filled out the paperwork, faxed everything, I'm so upset I dont need pain meds I need an epidural so bad it's taking weeks .... It's Friday now I've called her 5 times today and nothing .... She's rude and unkind and doesn't care that I'm in so much pain, I would never continue the process but my insurance changed .. I was recommended to go there in person to try to make an appointment because I was told they don't respond well to telephone calls. I went in and asked for an appointment and I filled out about 10 pages of paperwork. They said that their appointment person would contact me Tuesday or Wednesday the following week. I called them on Wednesday the following week and left a message saying that I had not been contacted. It's now been almost 3 weeks later and I still have not had anybody call me back. I moved on to another doctor who actually cares about my ailment. I don't recommend this business at all because, per their lack of response, they really don't care about their patients. read more

I am shaking, I am so angry. I have been with this medical team for over 4 years, after waking up paralyzed 30 years ago from Transverse Myelitis. Chronic intractable pain is part of this diagnosis, which they always understood. I have been on the same pain meds for nearly 30 years. I am 66 years old, a constant wheelchair user for 30 years. Today they call me in and I meet the owners daughter, a kid in her early 20s who treats me like a drug addict. They are throwing me out of their practice with no warning, because I am taking meds that apparently contradict each other. They prescribed many of them, so they just noticed this? They treated me as though I was a junky - no compassion at all. So I am cut off, their oh-so-compassionate offer "We can wean you off!". Stay away. In the lobby, I spoke with others in the same situation. They are apparently clearing their roster of anyone on pain meds. This other woman was accused of not taking enough of her pain meds! The office staff is lovely, my heart goes out to them. As for this kid cluelessly trying to run Dad's business, may you experience life in a wheelchair in acute pain. I started with Dr Wolfson many years ago . He's was skilled , compassionate, professional , personable ... had epidural, etc and finally had spinal fusion and hardware .... I than had my Rheumatologist specialist manage my pain and various meds .... Until many years later and he retired ... another MD took over his practice and with the " evolution " of pain management practices, he wanted a " pain specialist " to do my pain rxs .... Fair enough , which brought me back to Spanish hills .... Except instead of Dr Wolfsohn , I was assigned Ryan N ..... not an MD , and to be blunt , he was always talking over me , a lot of ego , and not the standard that was set . I believe he may treat people he likes , perhaps woman ? Better ? .... I then get the " Dr Wolfsohn doesn't own this practice anymore etc etc etc .... " and the new "Sheriff in town " is " procedure " orientated " vs rxs .... And he can't read MRI from a disc " you have to go to this place " ( I can read ANY MRI from my 10 year old Lenova btw , so I call BS on that whole statement ) . My meds had not changed ( except to decrease ) over last 30 plus years , I had never failed a urine test OR asked for an early refill , etc etc .. 30 years ! ....i finally had enough . Started going to an Anesthesiologist/ pain mgt MD ( double board certified NOT " Dr Ryan " ) and never looked back . I get treated professionally, and have tried new meds and am now better than ever . What a refreshing change of pace ! The change is night and day .... If you're not getting the treatment and professionalism that a long term chronic condition requires , do yourself a favor and interview other options! I did and I'm SO GLAD I did . read more

Ryan has balanced all of my medications through three spinal surgeries, diabetes, etc. He is very knowledgeable, able to empathize, and deeply cares about me and all of his patients. I have been a patient at Spanish Hills for about 15 years. This place used to run smoothly, but it hasn't for years. I like Dr. Kiker but he is too important to see patients now that he owns the place. His PA is Ryan, an argumentative, arrogant self-absorbed jerk, who believes he's a dr. Ryan told me that Dr. Kiker only sees a few patients because he's getting ready to retire. I guess I'm not one of those chosen patients. From the day I met Ryan I didn't like him. He has no personal skills and is argumentative. He shouldn't be the one who makes the decision of what procedure you should have. I admit, once I met Ryan, I should have left Spanish Hills. I didn't because I liked Dr. Kiker. Ryan once gave me a shot in the arm for pain I had in my shoulder. He didn't use a scope and of course the shot was 100% ineffective. I went to a shoulder Dr; he used a scope to see where the medicine was going. This time it worked. This obviously is a medical office, but they have no one answering the phones. I guess making money is more important. You have to leave a message for a prescription on vm and usually don't hear from the pharmacy for days. They even get the message wrong and makes notes about the wrong prescription that I need. Each time I make complaints about the way this office runs; Ryan agrees with me and complains that he has talked to Dr Kiker and the office manager but nothing changes. He even said on my last visit that he may be leaving their employment. Hopefully he retires so no one else ever has to deal with him. One time I brought in an MRI report that was taken at St. Charles Imaging. He actually was pissed that I would go there because he said that it's wrong that Dr. Spayde owns an imaging center. "It's a conflict" he said. No one in Dr Spaydes office including Dr. Spayde has ever told me to go to St Charles Imaging. Unless I had to, I wouldn't go anywhere else. He has put down Dr. Dirx for "double dipping" because Dr. Dirx worked for two different pain management offices. This guy is incredibly unprofessional and should not be working with the public. read more

I was a patient here for 7 years. In that time Dr. Buchanan punctured my spinal cord during placement of a dorsal root ganglion stimulator. This procedure involves needles and guide wires as well as leads place by the spinal cord. When I informed this error to him his response was "I wasn't even near your spinal cord". As if anyone else was poking in my back the day of the procedure. He was more concerned about leaving for his trip to Japan than he was doing the right thing to help me. Frankly his ego is much larger than his skills. He told me to go to the ER which cost me 3500.00. Eventually one of the other MD's, Dr. Kia, had enough compassion to help me by doing a blood patch to plug the hole Dr. Buchanan created. I was in excruciating pain for a month after the procedure on top of the Complex regional pain syndrome I already had which was the reason I had the stimulator placed in the 1st place. If you challenged Dr. Buchanan he is grossly defensive and his MO is to say you were rude to his staff. He even had the balls to call me a bitch. The whole place is a shit show. On top of this event I discovered Dr Buchanan put the new smaller battery into the large pouch the old battery was removed from. This left a battery that kept flipping in the pouch in my back which is an oddly disturbing feeling. To fix this he had to open up the pouch and suture the battery in the loose pouch. When doing this he touched something with the cautery tool and it sent a shock wave down my right leg that was so violent I nearly fell off of the operating table. Guess what his response was? "I didn't even touch anything " Deny and fell deflect and at all costs don't accept responsibility for your actions. I've been a RN for 37 years. I would have respect for a provider that said "Oh my, I'm so sorry this happened, it's a delicate area and sometimes it happens, let's get This fixed right away. The physician ( I believe he was a physician for I don't recall his name) I spoke with appeared to know little about my condition and gave me no advice or treatment. My experience was disappointing at best. I had been a client for low back issues and was sent an invitation to attend a webinar for an exciting new non-invasive procedure that could help me live my best life. The initial consultation was full of promise and my client responsibility was to undergo 3 epidurals over the course of 18 months to confirm that the procedure would work. It was confirmed by Dr.Nelson. The shocker was when I went to the follow up appointment to schedule the definitive procedure and was informed that unfortunately my insurance would not cover the procedure so all they could offer me was drugs or more epidurals. They had my approved referral for an entire month! They could not be bothered to call me. When I called them they had made a note to my info that they need a copy of the C&R (Compromise & Release) regarding a worker's comp case I closed out 8 years ago!! I've treated with many doctors since I closed it out, the Dr that referred me to them does not & has never treated me under WC, I've had major back & hip surgery 4 years after I closed things out. None of my current doctors treat me under WC nor did they provide this info. I don't know where they got the info but I'm not going to try to get these documents from EIGHT years ago! It's none of their business! If they have concerns about my medication, they can ask my primary physician. The hard medications are monitored by the government & they can easily verify my lack of heavy medication. All of this hassle for a mere consultation to explore my options!! Nothing more! No procedure being requested or medication. Just a consult. Needless to say I closed out my referral & will be going elsewhere. The WC person could not even be bothered to call back. Absolutely disgusting treatment of my family. Front desk woman should be fired. We took my immobile 70 year old mother in law in a wheelchair which is difficult enough to get her around to any office and took time off work to get her to office arrived 10 minutes early, between the rehab center and the appointment the paperwork was to our surprise not completed. The front desk woman was extremely rude and refused to give us the paperwork to fill out then and there, and told us that we had to come back and reschedule Appointment . We asked why we couldn't just fill out the paperwork there to which she told us "can you read the sign." The sign says if you were late, you have to schedule a new appointment appointment. We were not late we were early. The first star is for the office staff, who were very accommodating and nice. The second star is for the doctors assistant Chris, who spent nearly double the time the actual doctor did talking with me, answering my questions, and treating me like a human being that deserves respect. The rest of the stars were lost because of Dr. Buchanan. I've suffered with chronic pain all my life, and have fought tooth and nail to keep from losing my ability to walk for the last 8 years. This was my first time getting to be seen by a pain specialist. I had no idea what to expect, but I hoped for understanding, empathy, compassion, and perhaps a little hope that my quality of life might improve. Instead I was rushed through an initial consultation that didn't last even five minutes. He didn't take the time to go over my paperwork - of which there was a veritable mountain of it - my medical history, none of it. I presented with body-wide chronic pain from a genetic condition I've had from birth, and instead or trying to treat me as a whole he told me to select the body part that "bugs me the most". I selected my hands as the pain has kept me from enjoying my hobbies, but he cut me off when I tried to say so. Then he asked me "well, what do you want to do about it?" I don't know, I'm not the doctor! He then proceeded to tell me that there was nothing that could be done because the finger joints are too small for injections. I yelped and googled looking for a new pain management doctor. What a mistake I made. Ryan is a PA there that thinks and acts like MD comes after his name. It should read, "Ryan Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde." First visit I thought wow did I get lucky. The second and last visit, he called me a lier as he yelled over me trying to talk. After about 30 seconds of that I walked out and spoke with the office manager Ann. Another joke, I tried to explain to her what happened and her reply was, "I know Ryan and I really don't think he'd do that". He really has them fooled. Pull the sheets over their eyes. Dr. Patrick Buchanan is an excellent Pain Specialist. I have seen four other pain specialist over the past 15 years and he is the only one to get me some pain relief. My low back problem can't be helped with surgery so I have been dependent on getting relief from epidurals. Recently Dr. Buchanan installed the Saluda "Evoke" ClosedLoop Spinal Cord Stimulator and I am experiencing about 90% pain relief from my lower back down my leg, to behind my knee, and down to the bottom of my foot. I have gone from needing 3 ice packs (for my lower back, behind my knee, and on my foot) on a regular basis to help relieve the pain to NO ice packs. The worst. I had called the front office to arrange a first time appt as I am on opiates which I am trying to wean myself off of due to surgeries and stage 4 cancer. I explained I had two other appointments that day all very close in Camarillo like them and they insisted the time slot we selected would be fine. They mailed me the initial paperwork to fill out; it was a massive package that I didn't have time to do. I got it at 5:00 pm in San Jose and the next day my parents drove me six hours to Camarillo as they need to be in their residence while helping to care for me. They are in their 80's. The next day I was in chemotherapy. The next morning I went to Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Specialists and got there at 8:00 or a few minutes after for an 8:30 a.m. appt that the front desk said would last a lot less than half an hour. I immediately started filling out the large amount of paperwork and was shocked when I looked at the clock and it was 8:45 a.m. I was 15 minutes into my appt and the front desk said nothing. They knew I had to leave at 9:00 to drive to my next appt. I asked the woman at the front desk to go to my appt and I would finish the rest of the paperwork later (my doctor had already sent Dr. Buchanan my notes.) This front desk woman denied me my appt and refused it saying I had to finish my paperwork. I asked to speak to the manager which was a legitimate request. Instead I was told I could see the Dr. at some point by this front desk. Dr. Buchanan was in a hurry and accused me of being rude to his staff. In my hurry and shock I didn't accurately convey to him my opiate usage and his plan was based on that. I went home later realizing this was a problem that needed correction. I took time to write it down and have all pill taking recorded. In trying to wean myself off the drug I had cut the 10 mg in half and took the two half's on different shifts, only prolonging the hours but not the drug amount. Because I had cut the original 10 mg in half the previous doctor made successive prescriptions at 5 mg listing the amount of hours only for half a pill for the day. At that point, I had been going through the triage nurse who I don't think understood what I meant either and at some point a 120 pill bottle was changed to 60. When I finally realized what the problem was I wanted to clear it with everyone. I explained over the phone to Dr. Buchanan who didn't understand and asked me to come into another appt. I did that day and it was a nightmare. He wouldn't listen to a word I said, cutting me off, interrupting me, being nasty and rude with a sneer on his young face. Apparently on some power trip as he wasn't there to listen, understand or help but to tell me very accusingly and falsely I was rude to his staff when I had a legitimate concern/complaint. By the way this same front desk worker came to sit out in the lobby when I offered to fill out the last leg of the paperwork which I had time to do before the appt. and talked a lot to a patient about her kid for awhile which is distracting while filling out papers. She wore extremely large stretches of sparkly eyeshadow going to the sides of her face like it was Halloween. In any case Dr. Buchanan was incorrigible, disrespectful, had no interest in my case. I didn't like him and knew I had to find a different Dr. and place but while there he didn't even have the maturity to listen, fix and then provide me with the new plan and corresponding correct amount of pills to implement it. Just terrible. Why ask me over if he won't hear me out past two seconds or read what I wrote for him; I also had with me my recorded times of pills taken. He refused to listen or read. He had a bad temper. He said he didn't want to service me; he apparently invited me back to berate me and trust me...he has absolutely no concern or interest in my case and I suspect yours. He even knew my cancer had come back strong as I has just been told that by the other Dr. and that could also set me back in how long I could wait to take a pill and we needed to consider that. He also needs to know sometimes the pills are needed for withdrawal symptoms more or much more than pain and I do have those symptoms which he won't let me explain. My chest feels tight, I make involuntary moaning noises. I have to withdrawal properly based on my usage history. He has no interest, doesn't care, and is nasty to boot. A quiet assistant was in the room the whole time and the door for this nasty experience was left open so his staff could hear him berate me and change the issue into defending his staff. They were all staring at me (some laughing) as I left to bring in my elderly father in at some point trying to work out this out at least for this last appt. but he let Dr. Buchanan off the hook in the end knowing there wasnt enough pills and that he didn't want to service us and we would have to go elsewhere to fix the situation. In addition, I had other complex medical issues. Dr. Buchanan walked me through steps I had to take with other doctors to prepare for treatment. Finally, the day came. It took a couple of weeks for the treatment to kick in, but I knew the treatment was successful when I slept through the night without waking in debilitating pain. I have had the pleasure of working for Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Specialists for the past three and a half years. I find comfort in working with such amazing doctors such as Dr. Kiker, Dr. Kia, Dr. Buchanan, Dr. Tourje, Dr. Katouzian, and the Great Physician Assistants; Dave Davis, Ryan Nakasone, and Nelson Fuentebella. Together these providers make an excellent TEAM. They each have a unique quality that patients respect and appreciate. They value their patient's and truly take time to listen and help them with their pain management needs. Each patient is treated with respect and as an individual, and their health plan and care is structured to their health needs. Besides working for these amazing providers, Spanish Hills is ran by an exceptional Manager. A manager to whom I look up to as a STRONG professional woman who truly cares about the practice and her employees. Last but not least, I am so fortunate to interact with all the kind hearted patients who are in search of a pain Specialist to help with their pain management relief. I was once left in left behind, simular to limbo with my pain and suffering by another facility through W/C, you all know what that's like. But here at the "Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Management Specialists", there they cared about me and the severe pain I was experiencing that would not permit me to rest nor sleep. I never wanted to be opened up (surgery) the previous facility gave me a "you have no option" but to have a Boston Scientific Nerve Stimulator with battery implanted in my back which at first gave me a 45% of pain free, but I later realized that it was not functioning properly and they left me hanging dry with no where to turn to for help. Well I phone the company and their response was there was nothing they could do for me, I explained to them that it would take 3 days of charging the Device just to be use for 4 hours then rechange again for another 3 days, then take pills for some relief of pain. I fought for 5 yrs. to get it replaced and still nothing. I sought help by an Attorney, crying and in severe pain he had me referred to "The Spanish Hills Interventional Pain Management Specialists" the only place I will ever go to or refer my friends and family to if ever they suffered from pain. The Doctor's and Staff there truly go out for you, I know this personally I've experienced it and lived it. Now I feel better, I walk with almost no pain and I get 70-75% of pain relief. I was referred to Spanish Hills Pain by my former Pain Physician before she retired a few years ago. As difficult as it is to find a great pain doctor who listens, cares, takes his/her time with you and recommending the right medications, treatments, etc is rare!
