I rescheduled for 730am Nov 1st and it was freezing outside, but I had a very good experience overall. A couple tips I wanted to share that I haven't yet seen on the reviews. If you have an appointment, go inside right away and check in with the desk so you can get a number. I arrived at 7:15 and was told by one employee to simply have a seat and I'd be called at my appt time. My appt time came and went and over a dozen walkins were brought in during that time. At 7:35, I checked in at the desk and was told that I should've done that already as soon as I arrived. My paperwork was verified and I was given a ticket. I received a text with my ticket number as well. I was prepared to wait forever since I hadn't checked in immediately. Thankfully, my number was called almost immediately at 7:40. The clerk was very pleasant and friendly. I was out by 8 with my new drivers license, less than an hour after arrival. I can't stress this enough, but it really pays to be friendly and polite. I smiled at everyone and they were all courteous in return. If you don't speak English, please make sure you know what you need because the employees only speak English and had a tough time understanding those who did not. A translator will not be provided. My last warning: the employees were extremely communicative and gave updates every few minutes. They told us all that the kids were out of school today so many of them wanted to take their road test and the wait would be 3-5 hours. You must make an appointment if you don't want to wait forever. They also told us that if we got tired or cranky that we should just leave. Parents were also asked to wait in their cars and not inside with their teen in order to allow more chairs for other patrons. I moved from out of state and already had a RealID so I brought my SS card, drivers license, water bill, electric bill, and car insurance verification. These were all required and worked out for me. I took the vision test and there were 20 road signs on the test that I had to read out. The first 16 are normal signs but the last 4 are completely blank and you just have to recognize the shape, which is really confusing. Some are obvious like a stop sign, but I didn't recognize the shape of a "no passing zone" sign. It was the only one I missed so not a big deal but just a heads up. Study the signs while you're waiting. They have printouts at the front desk. I'll add more tips if I think of them. I was prepared to wait for hours even with an appointment and I was pleasantly surprised.

They tell you not to get there any earlier than 15 before your appointment- don't believe it because they will take everyone else as a walk in that got there before you. Once they take your documents they send you back OUTSIDE to wait while they take all the walk ins, which is actually inhumane in this heat. Plan to go on a day with nice weather, for sitting outside for god knows how long. Glad I don't have to do this very often. NC- get your act together

Thel Office is not visible from the street and I spent more time cirling the blocks than I di in renewing the llicense. Paint the NCDMV Logo on the building black or contrasting color. As they got people in and out the gentleman counted and let more people in. They were very patient, fast, and courteous. NOTE: Make sure you bring your DL/ID, birth certificate, 2 proofs of residency, and marriage license for the Real ID. They all have to match as far as the spelling of your name on all documents. The gentleman comes out periodically to check documents and will let you know if something else is needed for the service you're requesting. Any kind of driving test they start cut offs after 3pm. You have to ask for the specific time. Hope this helps.

My experience this morning at the NCDMV Driver License office in Durham at 3825 S Roxboro St was…read moreexcellent. I had a 7:45 AM appointment for a simple license renewal. I checked in with a friendly woman just inside the entrance at 7:40, sat down, and was called at 8:01. Another friendly woman greeted me and began with the basic questions and also answered a couple of my questions. She had to help a colleague twice but was quickly back to me. She offered to take my picture a second time when i was disappointed with the first one. (Smiling made me look less old!) I had to provide several signatures, received a temporary license (good for a month until the new one arrived.), paid with my credit card, and walked out at 8:19. Although i saw in two places online that this and other DMV offices did not have public restrooms this one certainly does now. I cannot report on its size etc. as i visited before my appointment the MacDonalds across the street. Finally -- i was frustrated by the online appointment system which had no appointments available when i began looking for one. It took me a day and a half of clicking frequently between my chores etc. to find one -- i assume people cancel and a place opens up. I calculated how far i could drive and what times i could take based on distance. I live in Chapel Hill and have family in Greensboro, but none east of me so figured i could not go east much further than Durham while i could go further west. I waited until two weeks before my birthday to start my random clicking routine which i regret and am marking my calendar to start my next renewal search as soon as the postcard reminder comes from the DMV! though i am sure we all hope this problem will be behind us before then!

Everything went so smoothly. I came back to get a couple of trailers put into my name. The person who is in charge of doing the title work refused to help me telling me that I had the wrong paperwork. I came back with another form to see if that would work and she informed me that it wouldn't. I explained to her that it worked for the boat at fish and wildlife and it worked for both of my vehicles. She informed me that there were different rules in place and that she couldn't help me. I finally decided to go to another dmv and...guess what...I had the right paperwork. I would normally not leave a negative review about anyone but she could've cost me money because of her lack of knowledge. The job she has is way too important for her to not know how to do it.

I brought literally any important document I have regarding my life, money and car. I was prepared. Two people in line before me, lots of staff this day (9:30a Tuesday) and a bright atmosphere. Not quite the dreadful DMV energy experienced hours before elsewhere. Nice lady took my stuff, YOU NEED cash for the fee, it's like 5 bucks, everything else you can pay on a card. Left with plate within 15 minutes. Taxes suck, but I don't own a Ferrari so...could be worse.
