I ended up getting smothered a few minutes in and I tapped and said I need to reset because of my elbow. He proceeded to tell me "this is not how that works" (ON MY FIRST CLASS! ) when I asked to get up. I had to use everything I had to get to a position so I could breathe and eventually force the instructor off. I wouldn't recommend this gym to anyone honestly. The owner came in and told me to quote "get the fuck out". Thuggish, little rules, not clean. Sad that an instructor has the ability to strip the fun out of such an amazing combat sport.

They not only have impressive skills in martial arts with numerous international championships, but also are fantastic coaches. They made the training challenging and yet fun, motivating students for continuous improvement to the next level. They also organized various team building events, like pizza parties, ice pop treat, volleyball games, to engage students. The coaches really care about individual students. They are very kind, willing to make extra efforts to help student's personal growth. They reach out to support and encourage students. My son became enthusiastic about martial arts. He takes every opportunity to attend the practices, and feels proud of the completion of each class where he overcomes new challenges. Through training, he made tremendous improvement on strength and flexibility. My son has participated in several demos and competitions. That's a great motivator for him to improve his skills and to strengthen self-confidence. Coach Jenny is very caring, always smiling and patient, checking out the perfect size of outfit and weapon for each student. She also took a lot of photos/videos of every event and thoughtfully organized them into one directory for each student, for a memorable experience. The team members also cheer up for each other like a big family. The coaches work with students of different levels and help them to strive for the best self. We recommended three new students from different families ranging from 7 years old to 13 years old to join the school, and they liked it! He deals with attention issues, as well as social and anxiety issues. My younger son started about a year ago and now he is 6. He can be so sweet but cannot keep his hands to himself if his life depended on it. I have them both at Hands of Life for very different reasons. I truly respect and admire the teaching principles at HOL. Not only are the kids engaged and also having tons of fun while learning martial arts/physical activities, but for my kids specifically, it helps them work on improving their areas of concern. I especially like the chats (example - healthy food ideas) that are given at the end of class. Working on their inner strength is just as important as their physical strength. Their instructors have nothing been short of amazing and Sensei Arthur runs an extremely well organized martial arts school. HOL offers some really fun events such as Jedi academy (with light sabers) which my kids LOVE! My only wish is that I could bring my kids to HOL more than once a week, but as a working parent, I just cannot. We are exceptionally proud and fortunate to be a part of this family!

They teach kids about confidence and discipline and history. There are always enough sensei per class to give each student personal attention. It's always amazing to see these students compete at Koei Kan's annual Tai Kai tournament where all of North America's Koei Kan schools compete at all ages. Many of the Sensei started with Koei Kan when they themselves were kids, and many others discovered this karate system as adults. They all volunteer their time teaching because of their love for karate and dedication to this dojo.

Having several years experience in martial arts I know how schools are supposed to be run and this is one of the most well equipped in terms of clean and sanitary training areas and knowledgeable coaches. McDojos are abound in this day and age - but the lineages of Shaolin and Professor Andre are easily traceable and the quality is apparent in the instruction for both children and adults.
