We promptly decided it was time to have it replaced...better than ever before! We got a couple bids for the job. But Charles really stood out because: 1. After walking the job, he promptly sent a detailed bid and CAD drawing. We refined the scope several times and every time he would promptly refine the quote and redo the CAD drawing. Very good follow through. Not pushy, just responsive. 2. He had a large book of color photographs of his work that helped us choose finishes and make design decisions. He has done a TON of patios and pergolas in different styles. I love this book because there are a lot of decisions to make -- it's easier to point to the picture you like more vs. having to imagine if you want feature A or B. In terms of price, Charles was in the middle -- not the highest bid and not the lowest. But we got the best feeling from him, and that's what is important to me. We redid our kitchen two years ago and our general contractor (not Charles, obviously), fled the country in the middle of the job after a progress payment! Yikes, bad memories. I am very happy with how my patio and pergola turned out; we seriously live outside now. We have a plexiglass cover (to protect from rain) and fans (to help somewhat with the Texas heat). Charles and his crew were great overall. Pluses: - They only do outdoor patios and pergolas. This is what they are good at and they are fast. - Charles was here a lot, especially at first to get the job started. He didn't just oversee progress, he was out there working and sweating with his men. - Charles helped to perfect the design while the job was in progress. He had his wife paint several different colors of grey stain onto sample boards so we could choose the right one. We spent a few hours perfecting the brick pattern on the columns. He wanted us to be happy with the final outcome. - Flexible with changes with very few change orders. I must have added 10 electrical outlets...didn't get a bill for it. So unusual for a GC. - Open to feedback when we felt like something wasn't perfect. Because they were outside my kitchen window, I would do dishes and watch progress unfold. And let him know when I didn't like something. Absolutely never got push back from him. He would call his crew or come by and fix it immediately. - Follow through has been great. Even after we were all paid up, he sent over a crew a couple times because rain was getting through my plexiglass cover. Again, so unusual for a GC. Minuses: - I wish they would broaden their scope from just outdoor patios and pergolas to other things. I have a bathroom I would love for them to remodel. Ah well. Anyway, check out the pictures. One of the prettiest patios and pergolas I have ever seen, and I'm lucky enough to have it in my backyard.

He was never on time, and was a no show several different days. He was supposed to start on July 25th, but did not show up until the 31st of July. He worked for about 3 hours before he hit a water pipe going to my neighbor's house. He called a plumber and said he was going to wait until the issue was fixed. I got a call from the plumber's office that he was not there when he plumber arrived. I had to leave work and meet up with the plumber. The plumber charged $225 and I am stuck with that bill, since Brian says he is not responsible for covering that charge. When I told him that I believe he is responsible, he refused to finish the fence. He also knocked down my other neighbor's 3 foot picket fence and left trash in the yard and driveway. Brian stated he would NOT finish the job. He stated he would refund my money on July 31st. As of today, August 8th, he has not refunded my money or return to finish the fence. He refuses to accept or return my calls. The only thing I get from him is "you are not my only customer". I have tried several times to work out a deal with him to finish the job or bring the materials (with receipt) that he says he purchased. Still I get nothing. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. You will regret it. Also look at the reviews for Systel Fencing Service, which is registered to the same address as Houston Fence Company. Looks like another company owned by Brian has also not done work he has got paid to do, or refund his customers money. Do your homework before you hire. I thought Brian and Houston Fence Pros was a stand up company, but I have been proved wrong on a daily basis since paying him to do a job that he now refuses to do and will not refund my money.

Kephart Handyman is actually two brothers, Barry & Bill Kephart, and they just finished up a job for me. I had a list of the usual handyman-type tasks that needed to be done - replacing an electrical outlet, replacing the puck lights above my kitchen sink, replacing the weatherstripping around a door and painting a room, plus one bigger job - replacing an exterior French door. They did all of that for a reasonable price and they did a very good job, too! All through the process, they communicated with me regularly. They showed up when they said they would and they cleaned up after themselves, too! I highly recommend Kephart Handyman and will definitely be calling them again when I've got more work that needs to be done.

Barry's brother Bill installed a PlexiDor through-the-wall dog door; also, Bill replaced my back door which was beginning to rot with an energy efficient door. Bill and the rest of the crew appear to take pride in their work and clean up after themselves. They are all kind and respectful. I like and trust them all. Barry prepares the estimates and schedules the work. While the work was in progress Barry came by our house almost everyday to insure the timeliness and quality of the work. If I ask Barry a question that he doesn't know the answer to he doesn't blow smoke; instead he says he doesn't know but will find the answer and get back to me. I feel I can trust someone like that. Barry is a pleasure to deal with. I hope they stay in business for a long time. I recommend Kephart Handyman Services with out hesitation.
