Their rates were more…read moreaffordable than many other insurance companies, communication was good, and the process was smooth. Unfortunately, that changed when it came time for my renewal. My premium increased by about 60%, despite the fact that I had a clean driving record with no accidents, tickets, or points on my license. The increase seemed excessive, and the only alternatives offered were to significantly reduce my coverage to lower the premium. For me, that wasn't a practical solution. If I'm paying for insurance, I want coverage that will actually protect me when I need it. I understand that this was something that occurred with State Farm across the board. However, I still believe the local office bears some responsibility for how it was handled. I received an email notifying me that my premium would increase substantially and was told to call or email if I wanted to make adjustments to my policy. The new premium would have been about one and a half times my monthly car payment. I had been with State Farm for several years in the past and had been back with them for another year or two, so this was especially disappointing given that I had no at-fault accidents, tickets, points, or any other issues on my driving record. The explanation I was given was that the increase was due, in part, to false claims being filed by other people. In my opinion, if State Farm fails to accurately anticipate the cost of doing business or fails to adequately investigate the validity of claims before paying them, those are business failures--not consumer failures. I don't believe customers with clean driving records should be expected to absorb the cost of those shortcomings through dramatic premium increases. Because of the substantial rate increase and the lack of reasonable options to maintain adequate coverage, I ultimately decided to switch to another insurer.
