I'm a local contractor who per the county clerk needed to re-new my fictitious business name for permitting and whatnot. I first looked online at operating hours prior to doing so as to not waste time, I show up and they were closed during the weekday for whatever reason. Conflicting with regular business hours and what online had said. I called and the lady I spoke with this first time was nice and said "I would receive a call Thursday and they would take payment then, sorry for inconvenience." I was happy it was handled, so I thought. No call Thursday. I get a email requesting me to call and make a payment between 9am -3pm. I call alittle after 9am a couple times and get a message again saying, "due to these uncertain times, we may not be open..." Wasn't sure if it was an old Covid message or what. I called the main operator lady explained the situation and wasn't sure what was going on, I needed to get this handled. Again, I'm very busy and needed this delt with per the county clerk before I forgot. She said the person was just coming in the office. I said I would call back in a few minutes giving that person time to check their emails, get coffee whatever. She said SHE could take my card right then and there, I agreed. She sat the darn phone down and proceeded to explain how "I was up in arms and needed to make payment, blah blah." I had been jumping through hoops to try and get this handled and don't appreciate this unprofessionalism. read more

Reliably and customer service are poor. They reduced service from 7 days a week to 5 days a week. Tuesday edition starts the week and is typically the smallest of the week. One would expect it to be the largest covering the news from Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It seems that delivery issue are becoming the norm. This Tuesday I did not receive a paper, I called and left a message, did not get a return call. Wednesday I discovered that the paper was available in electronic version. I called, left a message, no return call. Today, Saturday Dec 4th, no paper. The message provided was, due to mechanical issues the paper would be delivered with the Tuesday edition. Fridays news on Tuesday is likely no longer of interest. The subscription rate was raised, the days published was reduced. The customer service is poor. I have been a subscriber for almost 40 years and I am very disappointed. read more

Missing our old driver in Wheatland. To my parents getting the paper earlier than 1/4/2020 748am was so nice. We always took care of our delivery people. Now, I know you're busy. As well as our "old" delivery people took extra effort to get our paper here by 415am. Yes.... they rocked. I understand you're doing your "job" as outlined in your protocols I'm sure. I appreciate having a local paper since lil 'ol Marysville doesn't get much time even on the "local" news but I can safely say the Appeal Democrat is one of the worst papers I have ever read. They apparently have editors but I'm not sure exactly what it is they do at work since every other page has mis-spelled words, stories that randomly end without an actual ending, and caption mistakes worthy of FailBlog. Oh, and did I mention the letters to the editor ? And by that I mean Republicans venting. Because that's all it is. Every day. Not worth the money for a subscription. Please don't waste tour money on their E-eaition, it's down much of the time. I wish the community had a decent paper.

In the past few months, the new owners of the Appeal-Democrat have managed to remove as much local talent as they can from the paper. Talented individuals, some who have with the paper for nearly 40 years, have been laid off in what is a cost-cutting effort. Some of you may remember back in 2011, the Appeal-Democrat was recognized by Editor & Publisher Magazine as one of the 10 newspapers in the country doing it right. In a couple of short years since that article was published, you'll notice most of the bylines that went into making that newspaper a community could be proud of disappeared. I started out as an intern back in 2007 and eventually became a copy editor for about four years at the paper. There were a lot of people who made that newspaper a fantastic place to be. Eventually, with parent company Freedom's impending bankruptcy, things began to slide and costs needed to be cut. The size of the newspaper shrank, things began to stagnate. I left the Appeal in August of 2011, nearly two years ago today. Less than 18 months after that, none of the reporters remained that worked there in my last days were there. It's hard to keep a newspaper running with the constant threat of bankruptcy hanging over you. But we kept hearing the problems were on a corporate level and that the paper itself was still doing a bang-up job. (Of course, you wouldn't know that Freedom was even involved in some sort of bankruptcy. Flush with cash after shredding properties and laying off workers, the company's flagship paper is being heralded as a fount of newspaper wisdom. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/jul/23/california-newspaper-industry-wisdom ) Now I can't say for certain what has happened in those two years since I drove out of that parking lot for the last time. What I can say is I've seen my Facebook light up with talented former coworkers being shown the door in nothing more than an effort by some bean counter to make the numbers look better. To quote the May 31 story about the Appeal's new ownership: --- "The Appeal-Democrat is a newspaper with a longstanding reputation for quality service to its community," said Roland McBride, Vista's executive vice president. "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to continue that service, and look forward to participating in their continued success in the dynamic news gathering and dissemination industry." ---- I'm having a hard time seeing how Vista can live up to the goals it promised, especially when it lays off a solid chunk of the local brain capital at the paper. When you lay off people with years of experience serving a community, you're not just cutting costs, you're losing people with relevant knowledge who know the community better than yourself. Now as a courtesy to the people who were let go, I'm not going to mention their names in this post. My words stand as my own and I don't want them painted with the same brush. If they want to name themselves, that's fine. But what I will say is the newspaper you'll find on your porch in the morning, or the news site you visit for Yuba-Sutter news isn't that newspaper that was Doing Things Right just two short years ago. read more

The paper is sadly a typically small affair I am not a subscriber and generally only buy the sunday paper to catch up on news and get the coupons/ads. As some have said the writing is not the best but they are also nitpicking because as you can see they are biased in the liberal direction. It is the only paper sure but if you don't like it why not open an opposing paper? Or a fair one that simply reports or allows both views? Another option is to simply not read or subscribe but obvioulsy they are doing something right as they are still in business and widely read in the area because like it or not this is a conservative town. And of course the paper is patriotic ( and not to a fault either) what reason is there not to be? And keep in mind our area does have a base... anyway its an ok paper certainly better than none read more

This newspaper strained its circulation and resources more when I called to renew my subscription ending in early August and ask for the offer of free fair tickets. I have been a subscriber for two years. They told me that this is only available to new subscribers. However, this clause was not on the advertisement. So, basically false advertising. I said well then cancel my subscrption and then the lady replied quickly, "okay its done." I guess they don't care about your business. The articles also seem to leave a lot of important facts and are not written well, but its the only source of local news in Yuba Sutter. read more
