Great service! It was busy and things came a little slowly. Our server was amazing and made any negatives just easy to overlook. They were out of the Pinot Grigio but offered a Chardonnay instead. Not my fave but it was fine. My Southwestern Chicken bowl had some of the mixed greens that were way past servible but I pick those out. There was zero chimichurri or tortilla strips as the menu description said, but again the service made that ok. My husband had the chicken, bacon and mozzarella sandwich and said it was great. This is an average Applebee's with the typical Applebee's food. I'm giving it an extra star because our server was extremely nice and friendly and our food arrived quickly. Good service was very important to our group with two kids who got up at 3 am to catch flights to South Dakota and then spent the afternoon touring Laura Ingalls Wilder Sites in 90-degree weather. I was here with a group of friends on a busy Friday night and we had this amazing server named Kayla. A friend of mine really likes the water at Applebees, so we had asked if it was possible to get her some water to take with her, we told her we completely understand that this is a weird request and it is totally okay if that not something she can do. She laughed with us and said she could see what she could do. To our surprise she had brought out 4 to go cups full of water (1 for each of us) so that my friend could have some water to take with her. She was so kind and friendly and certainly went above and beyond. Kayla- if you are reading this you really made all of our nights with how amazing you were and my friend was so happy about the waters. Thank you for being so incredibly sweet and putting up with our nonsense. If anyone is to deserve a raise, it would be her!! Asked where's the bacon ? Why doesn't mine look like everyone else's at the table? Server shrugs comes back with 2 pieces of bacon on a plate. Seriously??? No effort to truly fix the problem. Server kept offering coffee refills at the table but had to be asked for ice tea refill. This is a TV place. The lighting is a bit dim, at 2pm. The burger was close to medium-well, but just a touch of pink that I didn't ask for. The burger also wanted to fall apart and the bottom bun was too small(no really). Overall, at $16 a person...it's a touch below average. read more

Last night my fiancé and I went to celebrate my birthday. We were seated right away and had an amazing waitress. It was pretty busy in there so once we ordered it did take sometime for the food to come out (roughly 30 minutes). Now when we were given our food, we both ordered a medium rare 8oz sirloin steak with the sides of garlic mashed potatoes and the new cheesy broccoli. My fiancé's steak seemed to of been overcooked on one side but then only cooked for a few seconds on the other. The cheese on the broccoli was not at all melted; though to mention it again they were very busy and with my own experience in the food business, it's all understandable. As we were finishing up the manager came by and asked us how everything was and of course, my fiancé brought up what we experienced just so that there was a way to fix it. We were far from mad, which in turn the manager was very nice. He explained to us the reasoning for the steaks, which was very reasonable, and did apologize for the broccoli. After leaving our table for a while he came back with our check, and ended up taking $20 off, which was far from generous. So all together service was excellent and I'm looking forward to try the cheesy broccoli again, maybe this time during a time where they are not so busy. read more

First off, our waitress lied to us about not having salt for our shots or jalapeños for a margarita when clearly she just could not be bothered with our request. When Applebee's first came to Brookings it was all the rage and I will admit it was pretty good. We ate their quite a bit until the newness wore off and then just stopped in from time to time. As the years have gone by however the place has settled in to having fair service, fair food, and fair prices. Well, make the just higher than fair prices. I was actually a bit surprised at the bill the last time I stopped in. Still, like pretty much every other Applebee's, you are going to get an average dining experience in a very familiar setting. And yes, on occasion, the service is above mediocre, but it has been declining in the past 6 years. Let's take today for example. We were seated, and a server took our order. Then preceded to sit down with a friend across the way from us. And talked with him for half the time. She didn't bring us our silverware: the person who brought the food got us some. I was in town on business and ordered take out. I ordered the Thai Shrimp salad which was good and probably one of the healthier items on the menu. I also added a cup of tortilla soup which had a nice flavor. My problem was with the service. I approached the bar which is where I was told to pick up take out orders. The bartender quickly approached asked if I was picking up an order. She also asked if I needed utensils which I replied yes. She walks away and immediately starts taking another gentleman's order while my food is sitting on the back counter. Okay no big deal I'm not in much of a hurry. To ordered the 4 oz sirloin with 1/2 rack of dry rub ribs green beans and a salad. The steak was average at best. The ribs were very tender but the dry rub was burnt. The green beans come with bacon so it wasn't exactly the healthier side I was expecting and they were a little waxy. Salad was plain but fresh and good. The food is fine, my favorite is the chicken wonton tacos, it's the service I have an issue with. As a local I frequent this Applebee's regularly. I can't quite figure out their service strategy if they have one. One person seats you, one takes your drink order, another brings your drink, another takes your food order, and yet another brings your food. You ask one a question, but never see that person again or can't remember which of the 5 people it was. I have noticed this at every visit for the last two years. It is a horrible strategy and is inefficient. Doesn't make the waiter accountable for good service. It takes forever to get your food at this restaurant. Don't plan on a quick bite. read more
