Applegate Park has been a central place for family activities for anyone who's lived in Merced. I have so many fond memories here and spent many evenings running in the playground with my siblings. One of Merced's largest parks, it is home to the Applegate Park Zoo, a huge playground with swings, a skate park, an amphitheater, a rose garden and fountain, a small amusement park, and a nice, long bike trail along Bear Creek! There's plenty of room in the park to hang out and during certain times of the year, you'll find many groups playing volleyball in the evenings.

The skate park is more street than vert. While there are rules, I didn't see them for a while, and in reality, they feel more like suggestions. I'm not even sure I saw anyone wearing any safety equipment. Unless you're very new to skate parks or you're advanced and doing something that's unlikely with this skate park, you probably won't need the equipment so much. The skate park is close to some parking. There is a shallow bowl at the far end with ledges to grind and ramps and a pyramid to jump on the way. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, although I heard a few people grumbling, but that is always the case. Behind the skate park, there was a fence, and behind that, some small train tracks and a picnic table.

Absolutely loved this zoo! Plenty of parking. The gift shop is at the entrance.... great prices on some nice things. The entrance fee is $2.00 for adults. It takes about 15 minutes to go around the entire zoo but all the animals were so close up!! We spent about 15 minutes watching the bears eat.... we could see them breaking the strawberries and choosing the ones to put in their mouths! The cougar was beautiful! The paws were Huge. I have never been to any so where you could see the features of the animals so close and clear!! The staff in the gift shop was very notice and knowledgeable About all of Merced....

Decal sticker we bought from gift shop .

Prices are perfect . Being Merced this zoo is great for kids. Definitely recommend taking your children especially if you have little toddlers who love to walk and explore. My 10 and 1 year old had fun. We paid 50 cents extra for a cup of food to feed the goats and llamas. I personally got spit on but you are warned several times that the white one will spit . The animals enclosed do look sad but most zoos I've been to is the same.We spent no more than $15 on our trip, even with buying from gift shop. Thank you Applegate Park Zoo, it's always nice to support local businesses.

I was surprise of how awesome the zoo was, I was expecting a much less exciting experience since its so small. For $3 an entrance to the zoo, this must be the cheapest zoo entrance in the California- its definitely a mini zoo, but its worth a visit if your in Merced and plus your supporting a great initiative to care for the animals. The zoo is very well managed and the animals are cared properly, exhibits are also really nicely finished and sizable for the animals to roam - all the animals have such cute names like mocha and latte; the zoo itself has quite a collection of animals, nothing huge like a giraffe or elephant, but they do house a giant tortoise, monkeys, baby llama, raccoons, deer, goats, exotic birds, black swan and more. Parking is free here and there is plenty of spaces to park. The zoo is open 10am to 5 pm Monday to Sunday, however may close if its too hot, so call ahead to make sure they are open. My favorite exhibit is the baby llama, it was so cute and friendly- and so cuddly, best of all its a super model- pose for photo professionally. I believe this zoo even offers guest experience feeding food to its animals, which would be an awesome experience for both adults and kids. Plan to vist 10-30 minutes, also bring a bottled water if your visiting in summer, and also wear a hat just incase the sun is beaming down. The zoo is relatively shaded so you don't have to worry. My suggestion is to complete a few visit if your in merced, there is the historic old courthouse museum, the new ultra modern UC merced campus to visit and also visit the gouges Yosemite lake, right next to UC merced.

Never felt sad about animals in zoos before, but the bear pacing around in circles in that tiny metal cage with a cement floor and a random shopping bag on the ground made me feel bad. Land is cheap here. Put that poor guy in a proper enclosure with some actual dirt and trees.

Not a bad park at all for a small town. It is backed up to Bear Creek. It has a skate park. There is a play land there with a train. There is a amphitheater. There is Applegate zoo which is fun. My gripe is the trash. Way too much trash. Keep he community clean - grab a trash bag!

The items are in great to excellent shape. My first experience with them as far as donations was when I needed a couch to be picked up. I heard they would pick up items. When I called they gave me the third degree and acted like it had to be brand new for them to pick it up. My couch was perfectly fine to donate and the family who received it was more than happy. Because in the end, I told Hope Chest to just forget it! They obviously didn't want my donation. Well, today I called ahead of time and the person I talked to said, "Make sure you don't have a truck load of donations right before closing!" She didn't say anything about them not accepting toys of any kind. I would not have wasted a trip. I also agree with some of the other posts, their prices are pretty high for a thrift store. Yes, sometimes the manager will work with you. But I don't like to haggle. I would rather just see a good/fair price, pick it up and take it home. I also wish they would have student/teacher discount day like some of the other thrift stores have. It would be nice. :)

I came here to volunteer, and to my surprise, there were even younger kids participating. I learned that the minimum volunteer age is 10 years old. Some students were volunteering for school service hours, while others came through different companies and organizations. We joined the second shift from 1pm-4pm. The session started shortly after 1pm with a briefing and task assignments from the group leader. All tasks were explained clearly. The leaders checked on us throughout the shift to make sure we were doing okay and to see if anyone had concerns. Halfway through the shift, we had a 15-minute break, and one of the leaders brought ice cream to celebrate a volunteer's birthday and shared it with everyone. I thought it was a meaningful way to celebrate a birthday while helping a good cause. We actually finished around 3:30pm, and our shift completed: - 5,451 lbs of food packed - 474 boxes prepared for the "No Student Goes Hungry" program supporting students from elementary school through college in Sacramento County. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating, and the facility was clean and organized. Restroom: clean, bright, and decent. However, I did some reflection and realized that all of the clothing that I donated was being sold for profit. Going forward, my intention was to donate to an organization that receives the donation(s) and distributes them to underprivileged individuals/families free of charge. Some research led me to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Upon calling to verify their hours (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 10am-1pm and Wednesday, 4pm-7pm), I gathered all of the clothing and hit the road on a mission to make a difference. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a Sacramento Food Bank employee who eagerly began to load my clothing donations onto a cart. Since a lot of the clothing consisted of dress pants and dress slacks, he proceeded to inform me about a program called "Job Smart Clothing." Job Smart Clothing is a program within Sacramento Food Bank that provides career appropriate apparel for underprivileged individuals interviewing for employment or currently employed. How cool is that? I'm not a representative for Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. However, I will say that they provide an awesome service to the community, and that a little donation goes a long way (individuals who benefit from their services often leave with 15-20 pieces of clothing per visit). Before you throw away that piece of clothing that you think is out of style or doesn't quite hug your curves the way that they used to, think about donating it to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services!

I submitted an online application asking for a smaller dog and my preference for a poodle mix. They responded within a couple of days, as I recall, and asked a few more questions. After a few days, they contacted me with a possible match, explaining he was a senior poodle mix with a few medical issues. They work closely with Hitchcock Animal Services (county shelter) and had several dogs that had issues and needed a rescue with a strong foster program. They brought "Bernie" over, and I became a foster mom with full support from AFRP. They provided guidance and everything from beds/blankets to toys and even food! They provided the vet services to help Bernie be the best dog he could be. They invited me to various events (and even a TV spot!) to show off Bernie but unfortunately dogs with medical issues can be a little harder to get adopted. So after six months, I fell in love and became a "foster win" and adopted him. To this day, AFRP considers me part of their alumni family and invites me to activities such as local parades or fun events. They have a variety of dogs and cats, young to old, healthy to some having medical challenges, and work hand-in-hand with several shelters to help find fosters and ultimately final homes! I found their offices to be clean and functional, although if they were bigger, they could help more animals. I use Yelp frequently and know I make decisions based on reviews. I wanted to provide a positive and more recent outcome than some older comments which I feel are no longer applicable. The last note I will make is that as of 2024, they have new executive and support staff who are fantastic. So please consider discovering this great local rescue organization. AFRP have been around for a while but today, I find they are an excellent organization always improving on their processes and staff. So please GO FOSTER! It's fun, rewarding, and inexpensive.
