The beginning of the trail does consist of a winding descent so keep that in mind as the incline back can be hard for some. Once you get down you'll find yet another playground with a fun insect/nature theme. Making this a fun spot for kids and families. The amazing part of this park is the bridge that allows you to walk through the marshlands, the bridge does shake a little bit but overall felt pretty sturdy. It offers stunning views and is a lovely deviation from other nature trails. There are a variety of marked natural trails that vary in intensity/length making this place a great spot for all levels. Along the trails are also little lookouts so you can really enjoy the views. The trails are a bit secluded so you may want a trail buddy if you plan to walk past the marsh bridge if visibility is important to you. The trails are mainly wooded which offers a nice amount of shade which is great for the warmer months. There is also tons of parking available and multiple shelters for picnics or events. Overall, this is an amazing park and definitely worth a little drive to check out!

Stacy was an…read moreexcellent guide for many reasons: 1) she was very attuned to the pace of the group (there were 3 of us) and regularly checked in about breaks. 2) she knew the trails around the area very well and was able to point out some interesting things along the way, much of which I wouldn't know if I was just hiking alone. 3) she was just a joy to be around and managed the energy of the group well. The end of the hike involved some technical rock climbing/scrambling skills that I am still getting comfortable with. I was scared, but knew I wanted to challenge myself. I was a little slow, but she and the others in my group were super patient and encouraging, and as a result, I made it up the tooth! I really appreciated that she let me go at my own pace and guided me through that part. I felt pretty accomplished and was able to enjoy even better views at the top. Totally worth it. This was my very first time visiting this part of Virginia and I didn't know what to expect (oftentimes up north hiking in early May might entail dealing with mud season and I really wanted to explore somewhere new). I can easily say I will be coming back to the Blue Ridge Mountains very soon because it's so gosh darn beautiful. My hike with Getaway Adventures was definitely the highlight of my quick little trip to the area.

There is nothing I love more than trails, but when you combine history with nature, I get damn giddy! 400 years ago, Captain John Smith explored the Chesapeake Bay, and covered over 3,000 miles of trails--most of it being water. In 2006, Congress designated Smith's voyages as the first national water trail. Because of that, there is not one main trail for JST. There are several "trails" throughout Hampton Roads (HR). Each site has a sign and logo (see pictures) representing its inclusion with JST. Here is a list of the places you can visit in HR to check out JST: * Fort Boykin--Smithfield * Windsor Castle Park--Smithfield (Technically, Smithfield is not included in HR, but close enough to Suffolk, and many HR residents visit often.) * Mariners' Museum--Newport News * Virginia Living Museum--Newport News * Fort Monroe National Monument--Hampton * Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve--Portsmouth * First Landing State Park--Virginia Beach * Lynnhaven River NOW--Virginia Beach * Great Bridge Lock Park--Chesapeake TIPS: * Download the Chesapeake Explorer App (http://chesapeakeexplorerapp.com/) * Check out A Boater's Guide to the JST (http://goo.gl/dLi34r) * Here is the historical map from John Smith voyages: http://goo.gl/rGvgDA And here is the current map for JST: http://smithtrail.net/visit-the-trail/index * There is a Junior Ranger badge specifically for JST--ages 6 - 12. Go to this website and follow the directions: http://smithtrail.net/about-us/for-kids * Calling educators/parents! They offer lesson plans on the website: http://smithtrail.net/about-us/for-educators * Many of the water trails are accessible to kayaks and canoes! * Take a driving tour. (http://goo.gl/C4b7jk)

The layout of the cabin was spacious and very comfortable! It was rather hot, so walking the dog at midday was out, so he was able to stay crated with no worries if barking and disturbing neighbors. About a decade ago, we stayed in one of the cabins with our children. They loved it as we explored some trails, the beach, the historic buildings, the farm and equipment and rode bikes. Now my husband and I return to use the hiking/walking trails. The trails give you a little bit of everything. You can be in the shade, the blazing sun, on the beach walking in the sand, beside a field of cows or soybeans, or meandering down a rural road. We recently did a 4 mile hike and packed a lunch to enjoy on the beach. My only issue is that some people who come with their dogs have them off leash. We bring our leashed dog and I don't care for other large dogs running up to us with their owners not having control. I highly recommend going and enjoying Chippokes!

I'm originally from the area and whenever I visit home, I find myself running or walking with my family on the trail. In high school, we used to do cross country runs here! High Bridge Trail is a rail trail and the main portion is flat, which is perfect for gentle walking or fast running. I also recently learned that there are plenty of offshoots from the trail that have some elevation gains and make for nice hikes! While you're there, try and check out the Smyth Trail and the Camp Paradise trail. I really enjoyed seeing the old bridges and being near the river. Don't forget your bug spray! When I go, I usually park in two places: 1) public free parking in Farmville, and take the trail portion going back towards the river, or 2) park at the River Road parking lot, which is $2 self-pay/honor system, or free if you have the Virginia Adventure Pass. What I love about this trail is that there is something for everyone. I always see families with people of all ages (including babies in strollers), dog walkers, and people cycling! As the main trail is a bit gravelly, you will need a bigger tire for this trail. Side note: I would love to see is a small investment to make some of the trail wheelchair accessible. It's such a lovely park and would be wonderful if truly everybody could enjoy it. I will definitely be back to High Bridge and I really look forward to my next visit there.
