We (my 14 yr old) and I went on two different dives. One to finish their certification, and the next night we did the manta ray dive. Mary was wonderful with my kid and also took great pics. We wore 5mm wetsuits and were plenty warm for our January dive. We got to make an unplanned stop to watch 3 humpbacks on the 20 minute ride to the dive site. I had an absolutely wonderful experience with Aquatic Life Divers. My wife and I chose them because they were very receptive to our tight schedule needs--we reached out needing for me to complete my Open Water Certification dives and then do the night manta ray dive, while my wife, who already had certification, wanted to join for all the same dives. They immediately responded with a schedule that worked for all of these. As a result, we ended up doing 5 total dives, so got lots of experience. We worked most closely with Emily, John, Mary, and Colin, but had great experiences as well with Dustin, Nicole, Dylan, Carlos, and Caleigh. I want to give a particular shout-out to Emily, who was my instructor for my open water dives and was just wonderful and fun to work with. She has a philosophy that we should complete as many skills as possible on the PADI checklist on the first of 4 dives so that the later dives can just be fun. As a result, I felt that I got a similar experience of aquatic exploration to my wife, who was doing regular dives as an already-certified diver. Emily was thorough, making sure I got my skills down correctly and repeating as necessary, but kept everything SO fun. I got to see beautiful coral structures, amazing fish (most notably getting close up with a shark!) and got to dive down to 60 feet on my last teaching dive. The night manta experience was led by Dylan and was very well organized, with us knowing what to expect and making a night dive seem civilized rather than scary. Seeing the manta rays from the bottom of the ocean is surreal, and something that everyone should experience if they can. What stands out about Aquatic Life Divers to me is that the crew is just so much fun. These seem like people who like each other and like working together, joking around with each other, hanging out, and looking for the best wildlife they can find. We felt welcomed into the crew, included in the jokes and banter, and were treated like friends. They care a lot about what they're doing; we found them "picky" about spots, stopping and testing the current and visibility before letting us in. They're willing to reject a spot and find another if it's not going to be a great experience, which meant we were basically guaranteed a good time. My only constructive criticism would be that I wish they could provide more substantive food for the manta dive. Showing up at 5 and not being done till 8:30 makes finding dinner on the big island hard, as many restaurants close at 9. Some sandwiches before setting out would be great and I've seen other dive groups do this. But other than this, I couldn't wish for anything different and I would happily book with these great people again. Thanks so much Emily! You rock! read more

We were both so pleased with the level of safety and professionalism they provided, especially with one of us being a bit inexperienced. TLDR version: these guys are great! Highly recommend! I've done scuba in all the Hawaiian Islands, and this dive company has been the best I've experienced! I came across Aquatic Life Divers looking for a company that does combined snorkeling and scuba diving with the manta rays, as 2 of my family members don't scuba. These folks are the only ones I found who accommodate both on one boat. I ended up scheduling my advanced diving cert with them as well, while my twin bro and his wife did "fun dives" all week (they already are advanced). Tanya in the office was awesome and super patient with me (appreciate you!) The crew was excellent: My brother and his wife had Suzi and Marc for their dives. Suzi was fun and great at guiding. Marc is a genius about underwater flora and fauna. They loved the dives with them! My sister and her husband did manta snorkeling with Honey: she's was hilarious and did a great job! She's like a manta whisperer, and apparently has a lot of street cred at the dive sites. I had Mary as my instructor- she was truly wonderful. Very knowledgeable, fun, and friendly, and she was very patient with the folks in my dive cert class. I could see that she took safety and learning very seriously, and this made me feel more confident about my dives. She also gave us some excellent experiences underwater with the wildlife: she's a master at interacting with octopus! I felt like my skills improved considerably after working with her! I also thought that she had excellent leadership skills: on our manta night dives, an annoying/arrogant couple came with their complex dive gear from Okinawa, acting like captain of the dive boat. Mary and team were very calm and patient with them, especially when they turned out to be terrible underwater! She was able to manage all the noob divers on the trip, these dorks, and the rest of us, and show us all a fun and safe dive experience. Captains Frank (the Matthew McConaughey of Kona) and Carlos were also excellent. The dive boats were in excellent condition, with a really nice foam floor which was very comfortable to walk (or fall) on The gear was also excellent and well maintained. The team was organized and knew the dive sites quite well. We dove with Aquatic Life for their classic two-tank morning dive during a short trip to Hawaii. We were greeted by a very friendly staff on the dock and promptly fitted into all the gear we needed for the dive on a bright, sunny morning. Certifications were checked, fins and masks fitted and we were sized for wetsuits. We met our dive partners, who were joining us from a Hawaiian cruise that had docked that morning, and began learning about the plan for the day. Once on the boat, we were briefed on seating assignments, gear, emergency procedures and the trip to the first dive site. Our boat Captain, Kyle, ensured that we were all familiar with the amenities on the boat and reassured us that sea sickness was no big deal. Once underway, we enjoyed complimentary snacks and beverages while learning about the aquatic life we could expect to see. Our dive guide, Mary, ensured that we were all comfortable with our gear and that we were weighted appropriately. She briefed us on the depth, profile and duration of the dive, ascent procedures and reaffirmed our hand signals. We then descended and enjoyed a solid 45-minute dive ranging from 70 to 20 feet in which we encountered multiple species of fish, coral and other underwater interests. Once on deck, we were debriefed on what we saw and any challenges we encountered. We then cruised for about 20 minutes back toward the harbor to our second dive spot. Again, we were briefed on dive depth, profile, duration and ascent procedures, with some special precautions related to the active harbor entrance. Again we descended and enjoyed a 45-minute dive with even more marine life and movement around our dive area. The second dive site being just outside the harbor, our transit back to dock was no more than ten minutes. Back on land, we exchanged contact information with our guides and fellow divers so we could begin sharing photos and video. Overall, the crew was very friendly, accommodating and informative. Mary managed our group well, ensuring that everyone was comfortable despite varying levels of dive experience. The price point for this dive was very comparable with other dive providers, the schedule ran on time, the equipment was new, clean and in good condition. I highly recommend Aquatic Life Divers for both recreational divers and those new to diving and interested in getting open water certified. They also do snorkel trips for those interested in snorkeling or discover scuba. In terms of logistics, the team was very accommodating in coordinating for both my husband and I to be able to be on the same boat for his recreational dives (he's a rescue diver) and for my open water dives for my open water certification. Captain Frank was my captain on Day 2 of my open water dives and my 1 tank Manta Ray night dive; he was professional and knowledgeable finding good spots for us to dive. We even spotted whales from the boat before my fourth dive spot. They also had plenty of water and snacks on board to keep us hydrated and fueled. As someone who does not have much experience in the water nor is very comfortable in the water, I have wanted to be able to experience the underwater life through scuba but was very nervous about the process. I am thankful I chose to do my open water scuba certification including the pool session with Aquatic Life Divers. I had Mary W. as my instructor and am thankful for her patience, guidance, expertise, and support. Having her be my instructor for BOTH the pool session and open water sessions ensured she was aware of my experience (or lack thereof) and the areas that needed additional time and attention. After the first open water experience, she found a way to explain the tasks needed of me in a way I could understand. I practiced and remained calm in the water to complete the necessary skills in the subsequent open water dives. She made sure I was suited appropriately; she put me in the correct suit (I tend to run cold), got me in the correct amount of weight, and proper fins/masks. When she noticed that my hair kept getting in my face--she loaned me a headband and hair ties to keep my hair out of my face and even loaned me socks at one point. I definitely felt well looked after. By my second day of open water dive, I was transformed into a calmer diver able to complete my tasks and enjoy the time underwater exploring the aquatic life that she pointed out. After getting certified, I got a call that there was an opening for a 1 tank Manta Ray night dive, I was excited and felt calm knowing that although it was my first night dive, I was in good hands with Mary W. as the divemaster. The night dive with the Manta Rays was magical and the best way to end Christmas Day after getting my open water certification. When she spotted my husband during the Manta Ray night dive (he was on the 2 tank Manta Ray boat), she got us together and shared footage of the both of us with the manta rays that she filmed. If you are visiting the Big Island, I STRONGLY recommend booking with Aquatic Life Divers. My husband who did 4 recreational dives plus the 2 tank night dives with Manta Rays reports seeing so much aquatic life over those 2 days with the expertise of the divemasters.
