Myself, in a party of three, booked the nighttime manta ray snorkel and dive instructor Kona. One party member is a diver, and myself and the other member are snorkelers. Our diver, Bradly, said that Hannah did a great job as his dive instructor, and she was great at helping the newest diver of the group who was heavily struggling during his dive. Myself and Lisa were snorkeling with Laura and she was very helpful! She was great at finding mantas for us even when they wanted to hang out by the campfire. Chad, our captain, was super friendly and talkative. I get extremely motion sickness very easily. The waters were extremely rough during our visit, and I did get sick during the last five minutes of the snorkel, as well as the boat ride back. All members of the staff were very understanding and kind, and made it very clear that if I had to return to the boat during the snorkel or did have to hurl during the ride, they wouldn't be upset or judge, and wanted to help me in any way possible. A super nice and interactive crew, and they shared lots of stories about the rays that frequent the area we explored! We were lucky enough to see two bottlenose dolphins (a mother and child), a Galapagos shark, 4-8 rays for the snorkelers and 11 rays for the divers. I highly recommend booking through Big Island divers! They provided all of the equipment needed, and we were welcome to wear/use our own if it made us more comfortable. The only request I would make is that the snorkel instructor be more adamant about keeping our feet up straight in the water, as the two snorkelers across from me on the board constantly had their feet in the water as if they were doggy paddling, which over rated our view of the marine life and caused the board to shake (increasing my motion sickness). I chose not to wear fins because I had gotten anxious while wearing them earlier in the day, but I kept my feet up the whole time because of my previous snorkel experience . It would have been really helpful to have our snorkel guide get those guests to keep their legs up, but otherwise every staff member did amazing! TLDR: I absolutely LOVED diving with Big Island Divers! I did two different 2-tank dives. The DMs & Boat Captains were amazing, their customer service is incredible, gear was great, excellent communication and attention to safety. And I had a ton of fun. Full Review: I booked the two-tank Manta dive and the two-tank morning dive. I'm still fairly new to diving--I was certified about a year ago, and these were my first dives since then. Check in at the shoot was a breeze, and they introduced me to the Divemaster for that day's dives, Natalie. I told her I was a bit nervous and still rusty with things like buoyancy control. She immediately reassured me, told me I'd stay close to her, and said, "We've got you." I rented gear through them, and they handled everything, including bringing it to the boat and setting it up. Our boat captain that day was Nick, who was fantastic. He gave a thorough safety briefing but also brought a lot of personality and humor to the trip. It was clear how passionate he is about diving and the marine life. Throughout the trip he was constantly sharing stories and information, and his enthusiasm really added to the experience. Our group had six divers and two Divemasters: Natalie and Lauren (a DM in training). It was great being in such a small group with two guides. Natalie gave an excellent orientation before the first dive, covering safety, the dive plan, and what we might see. I had a little trouble descending at first, but she was incredibly patient and helped me relax and get started. Early in the dive Natalie pointed out a Galápagos shark--so cool! We also a bunch of eels, a nudibranch, blacknose butterflyfish, and more. I stayed close to Natalie while Lauren brought up the rear of the group, and it felt great knowing both of them were keeping an eye on everyone and pointing out marine life. Lauren led the manta dive that night. After another great briefing, we descended and the dive was incredible--we saw around 15-20 mantas (which is way more than the average). They were beautiful, and the whole experience felt magical. Fifty minutes went by in what felt like ten. On the ride back, Nick turned off most of the boat lights so we could enjoy the stars on the way in. The next morning I dove from a different boat with Captain Emily, who was also fantastic. Our Divemaster was Haley, and Lauren was assisting again. Once again, the crew took great care of everyone. Two guests became seasick on the way to the first site, and Emily and the DMs handled it with kindness and professionalism and without making anyone feel judged. That same pair had some difficulty during the dive, and the Divemasters were constantly checking in and helping them underwater, while still balancing leading the rest of the divers. One thing I really appreciated was how they managed air consumption. They regularly checked everyone's PSI and gave clear instructions ahead of time about when someone should head back to the boat. If a diver reached that point, they could surface while the rest of us continued the dive. That meant those of us with more air could stay down longer and keep exploring. On the way back from the final dive, Emily spotted dolphins and took the boat over so we could watch them surf the wake for a while--a great way to end the trip. I wouldn't dive with this operator again. Captain didn't want the customers to use the head. Dive master/ guide torqued down my Sherwood regulator adjustment knob so tight i couldn't open the airflow and venturi to get adequate comfortable airflow at depth during the manta ray dive. Even though i checked the regulator for operatability at surface, was very different at depth. I had to use pliers to open the adjustment knob after the dive. There is no reason to torque down the regulator adjustment knob that tight, it is finger adjustment, gosh damn. Maybe it was on purpose . I've been diving since 1974, this has never happened. Many times i choose to attach the regulator myself, sure should have with this crew. read more

Myself and seven of my closest dive buddies came to the Big Island from Oahu to get an extended weekend of diving. We chartered with BID for a two tank dive. We understood that we would be going to some more advanced dive sites as we are all accomplished divers. We even all spent extra for nitrox as we were expecting dives where nitrox would give us a little more NDL. Both dives were not by any means advanced. In fact, the second dive was right outside the harbor which we had done the day before as a shore dive. Both dives were anticlimactic. Also, they split our group up between two DMs. Six and two. With the two being mixed with novice divers. Our dive master found nothing. In fact the only thing he knew how to do is check our air every five minutes and would chase us down if we strayed too far from the group. If he doesn't know the site, then why is he leading dives there? We are a group of divers that have been diving in Hawaii for years. In fact, I am also a DM and I would never treat divers this way once I was under water with them and got to see how they preformed. One of the DMs, won't say which, seemed to have a condescending attitude towards the divers. Apparently, the other two of our group with the other DM and novice divers had it worse. I felt bad for them. They played a rushed game of 'follow the leader' with nothing being pointed out or found. Bottom line. I can not recommend this outfit to anyone who dives regularly and is comfortable with their skills. We spent almost $200 for two short dives that can easily have been and was accessed by shore. First time with this dive shop. Several on the island to choose from, but I went with Big Island Divers. The did both the two tank mints dive and he black water dive. The manga dive was great. We only had 2 mantas show up, but they were huge. Can't blame the dive shop on the number of mantas. There were 5 of us on the dive. The dive master (sorry I don't remember her her name) was great as was the boat captain. Helpful, friendly, and professional. The black water dive is not for the faint of heart. You are in 7,000 ft of water. I must confess I was a bit on the nervous side. They tether you to a line which is tethered to the boat. The dive master, Fernando I believe, was very honest about the dangers, and yet made you feel it was safe as long as you followed the rules. When we were in the water,he kept a vigilant eye on everybody all the time. I never saw him doing anything but watching everyone's actions, their air, and watching out for the safety of everyone. What a cool full service 5-star dive shop. Friendly staff that are attentive and ready to answer all your questions. Rented a full set of dive equipment and went out on one of their boats on a couple different days. The crew is very knowledgeable and helpful. Prices are fairly average. There is a big cooler on the boat if you want to bring your own drinks (there's a water cooler on board). There's also a rise hose to wash off with after you come up from your dive. Their shop is NOT located in the downtown tourist area that now charges for parking. So you can peruse this shop at your leisure. Their dive shop is well stock if you're looking for equipment and I believe they do repairs as well if you have your own equipment. I definitely recommend these guys and will use them again next time I'm visiting the island. read more

Fernando was a great dive guide. Did both manta ray night dive and black water dive with him. If I writing a review on just him, this would be a 5 star review. He is super professional, knowledgeable, and kept us safe. Front office people suck. I probably spoke with three different women that were all unhelpful. The website can be improved wrt to giving information on black water diving. It says you need to have done a night dive with them in the past 12 months. Turns out the manta ray night dive and the black water dive can be done on the same day and the manta ray counts as the night dive with them pre-req. It took about 10mins of conversation with someone at the front office to get that information. I also booked my cousin and her fiancé for the manta ray snorkeling the same night. Due to my cousins fiancé being scared and undecided on snorkeling, it was a day of booking. They have two very large boats. One boat is for diving and snorkeling with multiple guides, the other boat is snorkeling only. The boats leave from separate but close docks. Everyone reports to the dive shop to get their boat assignment and find out which dock they will go to maybe an hour before the dive/snorkeling. The person I booked with assigned my cousin and her fiancé to the other boat because the diving and snorkeling boat was full. I asked if she could switch with another party of two and she said know because the other people (all twenty other people) already knew which boat they were going to go on (it's a lie, everyone finds out when you check in). Anyway, I had a great time (thankful to my guide) despite front office people being extremely unhelpful and not willing to do anything to put a smile on their customers faces. read more

Fernando, Bree, Natalie, Ashton, and Haley are outstanding dive masters and instructors (they oversaw our open water and advanced open water PADI certifications). Chad goes above and beyond as the boat captain on every dive. Everyone is friendly, knowledgeable, fun, and focused on safety. They found us great dive sites without other dive boats nearby, and we dove with hammerheads, eagle rays, a giant school of spinner dolphins, sea turtles, and more. I would not recommend this company. They let us know they wouldn't let us scuba dive due to medical reasons 10 minutes before the boat left, at which point they said they also wouldn't refund us because it was too late. The crew was nice (we had Captain Jon and our guide was Natalie, who were both great) but the company screwed us over and management was unreachable (the manager Paul never returned any of our messages and wasn't in the office to speak with. Is 8-9:30 a.m on a Thursday morning an unreasonable time to hope to talk to management to discuss options?). If you take any prescription medications, dive with a different company from Big Island Divers as they won't provide the necessary info and won't work with you to get a refund. read more

We've been coming to Kona for 15 years and ALWAYS go with Big Island Divers. Why? As dive instructors we deeply appreciate the caliber of care and attention they give to everyone on their boats. We consistently bring non diver family & friends to do the night manta snorkel and everyone has an absolute BLAST! Newbie nerves are calmed with repeated instruction and personal help in selecting gear and suiting up. Once in the water guides like Natalie & Jasmine check that everyone is comfortable. My niece decided in the water that she wanted a smaller mask and they switched it out with Captain Jon lickity split. Gentle reminders to keep your legs up so the mangas can come close and come close they did! Over and over again several mantas came by to check us out and "belly up" to our group. While I've been diving for over 30 years I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this snorkel. If you're a diver do it both ways. Trust me you won't regret it. 7-21-25 Blackwater experience What can I say, been diving 4+ years now, mostly in the Caribbean but now in Hawaii. WOW!, AWESOME!, one of the best and most different experiences as a diver yet. You descend 30+ feet on a tethered line and relax and float. You shine your light upward in front of you and experience all of the ocean larva and early stage critters that come up from the deep. I saw an early stage octopus, many early stage jellyfish, even those with bio-luminescent; squid (less than 1.5 feet) can be seen coming in and out of site. When we arrived the ships wakes and waves created a panorama of luminescent just under the water....awesome. You will see different things at different depths, so go up and down on the tethered line. A note: Captain David and crew of Fernando and Jasmine were, in my opinion some of the best dive guides I have encountered. The briefing by Fernando was thorough and invaluable to me for a dive I had never done before. Highly recommend. read more

This was a truly memorable experience snorkeling and seeing the Mantas! Thanks to the Captain Tyler, hosts Jamie and Fernando. You will be taken out to their usual hangout spot (30min ish) and you'll need some upper body strength as you'll be hanging on to this giant floaty type board with rope loops. You can't do this unless you've at least snorkeled once before. Better if more than once. The team will give you some real confidence. Jamie is ridiculously strong. We went out and it was a bit (ALOT) choppy. Didn't like that poke bowl anyways. There's nice snacks provided. But I recommend eating like legit 4 hours before you go. No. Seriously. The manta ray night snorkeling trip was my favorite activity of my honeymoon! We were lucky and saw many manta rays right away. The staff estimated there were 10 different manta rays spotted in our area that night. It was fascinating seeing them swim so close to us. The only issue was my husband's facial hair prevented the snorkel mask from sealing properly so his nose was leaking salt water for the next several hours. So future snorkelers may want to shave! read more

Long overdue review. If you visit the Big Island, go night diving with the manta rays. One more time for the folks in back: IF YOU VISIT THE BIG ISLAND, GO NIGHT DIVING WITH THE MANTA RAYS. You might be a little scared or intimidated. We were. But don't be. They are completely non-threatening, graceful, gentle giants. You need to either be a SCUBA diver or a snorkeler to participate. I HIGHLY recommend you use a wetsuit. The gal at the dive shop counter suggested we didn't need one but another guide suggested we did. The ocean is generally warm here but when you're in the ocean at night for a good 45 minutes, it gets chilly. Use a wetsuit. They provide all the gear: wetsuit, fins, mask, etc. Just show up in a swimsuit and bring a towel. Many people didn't bring a towel. You absolutely should bring one. The crew was incredibly friendly, helpful, and reassuring. If you're a snorkeler, all you need to do is put on your wetsuit and fins, get in the water, and lay prone (legs on the surface). We probably saw 6 different rays and they do barrel rolls coming closer and closer to you until they are literally inches from you. It's not scary at all. It's thrilling. After the dive, the crew provided hot chocolate, chocolate chip cookies and fresh fruit. On the way to the dive spot, we were offered chips and pretzels. The boat hauls ass both to and from the dive spot. You could get seasick or you might love it. Everyone's different. You can bring an underwater camera, if you'd like. This is something you'll always remember. Do it. read more

The technician there was very helpful and knowledgeable. As we were leaving we asked what dive sites they suggested. Wow what an amazing experience. We did the Twilight Reef Dive and the Night Manta Dive. Dive Master Natalie and Captain Mark were the best. The water conditions were a little rough and Captain Mark was phenomenal at managing speed and direction in negotiating the waves for a smooth ride. Slowing down and speeding up when necessary. He also made us snacks when we were down diving, which was clutch. Mark also did a great job helping everyone manage their gear getting on and off the boat. Natalie was so friendly and you can tell she loves what she does. Her safety briefing was spot on and didn't feel rehearsed. She also gave us some great instruction on what to look out for and things she might point out to us. She had an awesome briefing on the night dive and manta rays. We saw some mantas on our reef dive too and she even let us know what their names were from memory. Natalie is so educated and nice. She watched out for everyone, gave clear communication in the water, and found really sweet things for us to look at. The Manta experience was truly unique and mesmerizing. Totally unlike any other manta dive we've done. A total ballet of moving figures around the lights in the water. It was very comfortable and safe. They got us down first and got us the best spots to view from. Jasmine helped us check in and fit us for our gear. She was very friendly and professional. Amazing evening Manta Diving experience with Big Island Divers! We were at Lower Campfire; loads of other divers and snorkelers were there too. Unlike other dive spots where you don't want more people, here it's the more the merrier because the lights from each diver attract the mantas to the plankton. Our crew-- Laura, Josh, Joe, and Tyler -- was fantastic. Recommend for sure. I only wish we had done the two tank dive and not the single tank dive, but we opted for single because we had just gotten off the plane from California and were tired. But wow, this is a can't-miss experience. A special touch was the sliced pineapple at the start, hot chocolate and cookie after, and friendly conversation with the sweet staff. read more

Holy crap, the manta ray night snorkel was AMAZING. I've wanted to do that trip for 10 years, and finally made it out here with free time and do not regret it! For the tour, they float lights attached to surf boards on top of the water to attract plankton to attract the rays, who know the drill. Float up to the board, scoop the dinner, roll, and repeat! You can get some amazing pictures, but honestly, just enjoy it. They are inches from your face and body if you're floating properly. Our guides, Emma, Danny, and Nick were amazing. They were genuinely friendly, on what is probably their 1000th tour, making sure to get to know their guests and point out fun things. In addition to the rays, Emma made sure we saw a great sunset view, the Milky Way, really just made sure we had a good time. Since we checked in early, she also recommended some things to do between check in and the tour, including a beach where there were about a dozen turtles just chilling in the shallows! The dive shop is well equipped, whether you bring all your gear, some gear, or no gear, and they give good directions to the harbor, etc. Our tour included wetsuits, fins, masks and snorkels - which were all clean, well maintained, and well stocked in various sizes. I really ended up appreciating the wet suit. Since you aren't moving, the water is a little chilly, especially at night. You know what? Just go and they will make sure you have a great time! read more

DO NOT GO. A few of us friends signed up to go on our trip to the Big Island. The boat ride out was beautiful, the sunset was great, but once we got to the location, the waters were hectic and choppy, and it was difficult to stay steady on the boat. We got in and got into our group and hung tight as we fought tough waters for the next hour, never once seeing a manta. As they were going over safety instructions, we were advised to not touch the manta as our bacteria gives their delicate skin infections. But if a manta were to touch us (it's on them), even though we're in their territory. So, not only were the conditions very unsafe on our specific trip, we are interfering with the health of the manta, and there were at least ten boats with groups of people doing this each night, AND we never even saw manta and got back on the boat with "half off discounts or future standby trips" for our very disappointing and expensive trip. Would never advise anyone to do this even on a good night. It's not ethical for the manta, and it's a money grab for tourists. read more

There had to be a least 20 rays at any one time. Captain Chris and Diver Ash were so awesome and friendly and knowledgeable and they kept us safe. Great personality and personable crew. I had no idea what expect and had never worn a wet suit. So easy to get on with Bens directions and I'm a big dude. Sophia was our dive lead. She's simple fantastic. Very informative, calm and attentive. We hit a great evening and saw 15 different mantas. Coming inches from you as they feed. The coolest ! Fernando and Dan run a happy ship. This was my 23rd trip (over 15 years) with Big Island so I have found them consistently great. The reef fish are in recovery mode after water temperature and aquarium collection issues and they are coming back. There is often an opportunity to see dolphins and whales occasionally in and under the water. Big Islands boats are nicely sized so even a full compliment doesn't feel crowded. Their on-line presence makes them easy to deal with and the shop is well stocked and accommodating. read more
