TLDR: I absolutely LOVED diving with Big Island Divers! I did two different 2-tank dives. The DMs & Boat Captains were amazing, their customer service is incredible, gear was great, excellent communication and attention to safety. And I had a ton of fun. I will definitely be diving with them again. Thank you Natalie, Lauren, Haley, Emily, and Nick for the incredible experience! Full Review: I booked the two-tank Manta dive and the two-tank morning dive. I'm still fairly new to diving--I was certified about a year ago, and these were my first dives since then. Check in at the shoot was a breeze, and they introduced me to the Divemaster for that day's dives, Natalie. I told her I was a bit nervous and still rusty with things like buoyancy control. She immediately reassured me, told me I'd stay close to her, and said, "We've got you." I rented gear through them, and they handled everything, including bringing it to the boat and setting it up. Our boat captain that day was Nick, who was fantastic. He gave a thorough safety briefing but also brought a lot of personality and humor to the trip. It was clear how passionate he is about diving and the marine life. Throughout the trip he was constantly sharing stories and information, and his enthusiasm really added to the experience. Our group had six divers and two Divemasters: Natalie and Lauren (a DM in training). It was great being in such a small group with two guides. Natalie gave an excellent orientation before the first dive, covering safety, the dive plan, and what we might see. I had a little trouble descending at first, but she was incredibly patient and helped me relax and get started. Early in the dive Natalie pointed out a Galápagos shark--so cool! We also a bunch of eels, a nudibranch, blacknose butterflyfish, and more. I stayed close to Natalie while Lauren brought up the rear of the group, and it felt great knowing both of them were keeping an eye on everyone and pointing out marine life. Lauren led the manta dive that night. After another great briefing, we descended and the dive was incredible--we saw around 15-20 mantas (which is way more than the average). They were beautiful, and the whole experience felt magical. Fifty minutes went by in what felt like ten. On the ride back, Nick turned off most of the boat lights so we could enjoy the stars on the way in. The next morning I dove from a different boat with Captain Emily, who was also fantastic. Our Divemaster was Haley, and Lauren was assisting again. Once again, the crew took great care of everyone. Two guests became seasick on the way to the first site, and Emily and the DMs handled it with kindness and professionalism and without making anyone feel judged. That same pair had some difficulty during the dive, and the Divemasters were constantly checking in and helping them underwater, while still balancing leading the rest of the divers. One thing I really appreciated was how they managed air consumption. They regularly checked everyone's PSI and gave clear instructions ahead of time about when someone should head back to the boat. If a diver reached that point, they could surface while the rest of us continued the dive. That meant those of us with more air could stay down longer and keep exploring. On the way back from the final dive, Emily spotted dolphins and took the boat over so we could watch them surf the wake for a while--a great way to end the trip. All the dives were fantastic, and I can't say enough good things about the entire team. I can't wait to come back and dive with y'all again!

Up for a Big Island adventure? You have found the place. I have been on multiple manta ray snorkel night adventures and by far this one is the best! You have an awesome crew and captain that don't make you feel pressured with anything. They have everything you need to have a great time as a single or as a large group. Divers and snorkeling can happen on the same boat. Enjoy and thanks Big island divers!

    Beautiful Evening Diving

Diving with Big Island Divers was such a great experience. The crew was excellent Fernando, Lauren and Austin! My husband went out with them 26 years ago for the Night Manta Rey dive and wanted to share this fantastic dive with us! It was breathtaking and we saw 8 Manta Rey's... I use to snorkel but diving is where it all happens right there in front of you! Thank you for a beautiful evening

We did two tours with Big Island Divers -- the manta ray night snorkel and an intro scuba dive -- and both were absolutely incredible. This company deserves every bit of praise they get. From the shop staff to the crew on the boats, everyone was so patient, kind, and genuinely invested in making sure we had the best experience possible. You never feel rushed, never feel like just another tourist... they truly take care of you. Huge shoutout to Aston, who guided us on our intro scuba dive and made the entire experience unforgettable. He was calm, encouraging, and so knowledgeable. Thanks to him, I felt completely safe and confident diving down 40 ft -- something I NEVER thought I'd be able to do on my first try. Both tours were smooth, well-organized, and so memorable that we're now seriously looking into getting scuba certified because of them. If you're on the Big Island, run to Big Island Divers. 10000000% recommend.

1st time 3 years ago great company saw at least 11 different MaSecond and third time we have snorkel guide (Lauren-amazing), scuba (Fernando was so excited about sharing his love of the creatures-including his love of the Mantas-wow!!!) We didn't see any Mantas on our first dive so Captain Matt and crew let us go again. This was a great trip and worthy of any bucket list! Great company! Highly recommend!

Myself and seven of my closest dive buddies came to the Big Island from Oahu to get an extended weekend of diving. We chartered with BID for a two tank dive. We understood that we would be going to some more advanced dive sites as we are all accomplished divers. We even all spent extra for nitrox as we were expecting dives where nitrox would give us a little more NDL. Both dives were not by any means advanced. In fact, the second dive was right outside the harbor which we had done the day before as a shore dive. Both dives were anticlimactic. Also, they split our group up between two DMs. Six and two. With the two being mixed with novice divers. Our dive master found nothing. In fact the only thing he knew how to do is check our air every five minutes and would chase us down if we strayed too far from the group. If he doesn't know the site, then why is he leading dives there? We are a group of divers that have been diving in Hawaii for years. In fact, I am also a DM and I would never treat divers this way once I was under water with them and got to see how they preformed. One of the DMs, won't say which, seemed to have a condescending attitude towards the divers. Apparently, the other two of our group with the other DM and novice divers had it worse. I felt bad for them. They played a rushed game of 'follow the leader' with nothing being pointed out or found. Bottom line. I can not recommend this outfit to anyone who dives regularly and is comfortable with their skills. We spent almost $200 for two short dives that can easily have been and was accessed by shore. I feel cheated.

What a cool full service 5-star dive shop. Friendly staff that are attentive and ready to answer all your questions. Rented a full set of dive equipment and went out on one of their boats on a couple different days. The crew is very knowledgeable and helpful. Prices are fairly average. There is a big cooler on the boat if you want to bring your own drinks (there's a water cooler on board). There's also a rise hose to wash off with after you come up from your dive. Their shop is NOT located in the downtown tourist area that now charges for parking. So you can peruse this shop at your leisure. Their dive shop is well stock if you're looking for equipment and I believe they do repairs as well if you have your own equipment. I definitely recommend these guys and will use them again next time I'm visiting the island.

Thanks BID for an amazing dive-Jenny and Trevor

Can anyone tell me how long the boat ride is out to snorkel at night with the manta rays? I get super seasick:(

I would say about 20-30 minutes each way. I would definitely take something! I don't get seasick normally but felt a little quesy after bc the night snorkeling is also a bit disorienting.

The team is super knowledgeable and does a great job grouping divers based on experience level so everyone has a good time. I'd also love to give a big shout out to Daniel and Cody who are always a blast and so much fun to dive with. Maxine is an awesome boat captain and Ashley was incredible dive master as well. She led our manta dive a year ago, gave such a great pre dive presentation, and was super thoughtful and fun to dive with on two separate occasions. Honestly, because of this dive shop we keep coming back to the Big Island and continue rebooking with them every trip. Highly recommend and I wouldn't look anywhere else for diving in Kona!

The booking process was extremely easy. I called with several questions, and the staff was helpful, informative, and reassuring. Because it had been so long since our last actual dive, we chose to book a private divemaster for the two of us. We had completed a refresher in June 2025 for a planned dive weekend that unfortunately never happened, so we knew we would probably be a little rusty. Jack's also saved the day before we even got in the water. My personal Atomic prescription mask unexpectedly failed when the strap attachment tore out of the mask itself. I was worried I would either have to cancel or spend the dives as "Mr. Magoo," but the shop had prescription masks available and fitted me with one that worked perfectly. That level of preparedness and customer service made the entire dive day possible for me. Our divemaster, Sabrina, was absolutely fantastic. She was pleasant, friendly, social, knowledgeable, and incredibly patient throughout the entire experience. During our first dive, I had some difficulty clearing my ears. Sabrina stayed calm and helped me work through it, reminding me of techniques I had used years ago when I was diving more regularly and occasionally had "bad ear days." Both Kallie and I were a little rusty on that first dive, but Sabrina never rushed us or made us feel uncomfortable. By the second dive, my ear issues had resolved, we were both much more relaxed, and the old muscle memory started coming back--including some of what I learned during my Peak Performance Buoyancy certification. The difference between the first and second dives was huge, and Sabrina's patience and guidance were a major reason why. Sabrina also went above and beyond outside the dives themselves. While chatting with us about the rest of our trip, she recommended the Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm as a "must visit." We had somehow missed it in our planning, immediately looked it up, and booked the VIP experience, where Kallie and I each get to hold a seahorse twice. That recommendation made our trip even better. I would recommend Jack's Diving Locker--and Sabrina as a private divemaster--**100,000% and without hesitation** to anyone, especially divers returning after a long break. The entire experience was professional, safe, relaxed, accommodating, and genuinely fun. Sabrina also took all of the underwater photos from our dive day, which gave us some fantastic memories of the experience: https://arroyo.smugmug.com/2026-Photos-and-Pics/HI-Vacation-Big-Island/Day-3-Kona-Diving

The directions were accurate,…read moreeverything was well organized, and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful from start to finish. Our crew included Mike, Justin, Eric, and another Mike (I think!). I wish they had introduced themselves a little more clearly because every one of them deserved recognition--they were all fantastic. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, but what stood out most was how genuinely respectful and non-judgmental the entire crew was. At many popular tourist attractions, it's understandable that after giving the same presentation countless times, things can start to feel rushed or impersonal. That was absolutely not the case here. Every crew member seemed genuinely happy to be there. They welcomed every question with patience and respect, and if the answer to something was "no," they took the time to explain why instead of simply dismissing it. As a parent, I especially appreciated this because it's just as valuable for children as it is for adults. Justin did an amazing job teaching us about manta rays before we got in the water. He took the time to show everyone charts and photos, explain their behavior, and answer questions. It made the experience much more meaningful than simply showing up and jumping in the water. Once we were in the water, one of my kids became a little overwhelmed by all the gear and new variables. Mike handled it beautifully. He stayed calm, encouraged them to sit on top of the float board until they felt comfortable, and made sure they were doing okay before moving the board farther from the boat. That patience and reassurance made a huge difference. I have two suggestions that aren't complaints at all--just ideas that I think would make an already excellent experience even better. First, it would be helpful to give guests a quick overview of the evening at the very beginning. Something like: "We'll have about a __-minute boat ride out, anchor at the site, pass out and fit gear, wait for sunset, then enter the water one at a time and hold onto the floating boards for about 45 minutes before returning to the boat and heading back to the harbor." Having that roadmap would have helped both my kids and me know exactly what to expect. Second, I would recommend letting guests know to bring an extra towel to sit on during the boat ride. The ridged metal benches became a little uncomfortable after a while, and a folded towel would have made a big difference (we were allowed to move around the boat which was also awesome- just for those who didn't want to). Overall, this was an incredible experience. We came for the manta rays, but what we'll remember just as much is the crew. They were knowledgeable, professional, patient, and genuinely passionate about what they do. We felt welcomed as people--not just another group of tourists--and that made all the difference. I would absolutely recommend Manta Ray Dives of Hawaii.

We did a Captain Cook snorkeling tour with Sea Quest Hawaii today and were very impressed. Erin,…read morethe phone representative, was friendly, patient, and answered all my questions, which made me choose this company. Captain Natalie and Assistant Anna were fantastic, knowledgeable, funny, and very attentive throughout the trip. Captain Natalie shared interesting stories about Captain Cook and the surrounding lava caves, and she even helped me with my snorkeling gear and inflating the vest. The snorkeling spot near Captain Cook Monument was incredible, and we saw so many fish. They also provided fresh fruit, chips, cookies, and soft drinks. Thanks to Captain Natalie and Anna, all six of us had a great time and would highly recommend this company.

Hands down one of the coolest things I've ever done. We popped over to the Big Island with cousins…read morefor Spring Break and didn't book until a couple days out because of weather. Thankfully, they had space for our entire group for the sunset time (615pm check-in) and we didn't have to wait for the late-late slots. Online booking was easy-peasy (no kama'aina discount, unfortunately). We checked in (parking is street parking and there are several boats leaving from the same area, so it can be a bit of a challenge) pretty easily - there were folks out front directing us where to go for Sea Quest. I decided the $35 for the GoPro rental was a steal compared to trusting my waterproof phone pouch and I have no regrets - you can leave the camera running the whole time and they give you the SD card at the end. It was no trouble to do that once we got there, as I didn't add that when booking. They have a decent gift shop and the keiki in our party bought themselves some stuffed souvenirs. We got fitted for shorty wet suits and prescription masks if needed, and then waited for them to split us into boats and groups. We were accompanied in the water by Wylen (sorry if I butchered the spelling) and Abram, and they had the perfect blend of aloha, humor, and information. Super chill, but you also knew they meant business about Rule Number 1. From there, we boarded the boat, a small zodiac-style craft, for the 5 minute journey to Manta Village. The website made it seem like we could leave things on board, but that really wasn't the case. We left all bags, clothing, towels in a secure room on shore, slippers got collected on the pier, and small things like eyeglasses were stored in a bin on the boat. No trouble, but I wouldn't plan to take anything with you on the boat. Getting into the water was easy, and we had one keiki who was a little apprehensive about everything - they took great care to lower him into the water, and when he wanted to go back to the boat a little early, they accompanied him back to the ladder no problem. There were plenty staff around to help and also identify the mantas by their markings. And there were SO MANY mantas! We had an amazing evening watching them - I lost count and forgot many names, there were so many swimming past. We had 30-40 minutes in the water and we had multiple mantas around us the whole time. I thought the time was plenty - by the time we had about 5 minutes to go, my stomach was ready to be back on land. My only regret is not stretching my triceps beforehand - I was not expecting my arms to be so sore after holding onto the bar around the light board! We paid $135ish plus fees per person (all ages) and it was the highlight of the trip, for sure.
