That part is impressive and honestly what's kept me coming back over the years. But charging $25 for a sample that's completely free at almost every other luxury fragrance counter is diabolical. I've shopped at boutiques across the country, and I've never been charged for a tester-sized sample. EVER. It feels unnecessary and greedy and lacks customer loyalty/appreciation and integrity in my humble opinion and I'm sure it destroys customer retention. The part that really stings though is how far the customer service has fallen. I've been coming here for years, and it used to feel like family....the old team was warm, knowledgeable, and made every visit personal. Now it's just...basic. You walk in, and it's a "take it or leave it" vibe. No connection, no care. Maybe it's a post-COVID shift or the change in ownership, but whatever it is, the charm is gone. I ended up going to Nordstrom afterward, got exactly what I needed (see picture of Nordstrom experience attached-EVERYTHING in the photo was from one visit to Nordstrom with 1 purchase) and walked out with 20+ free samples of scents I actually wanted to try, along with many more thrown in by my rep. And yes... they were free. The selection is still nice, but the pricing and service don't match the luxury they're trying to sell anymore.

But I saw that they stock Kjaer Weis, which is a lovely low-waste cosmetic line, and figured it was worth a visit to avoid an online order. When I walked in (no makeup, milking day four of my blow-out after my last haircolor) I expected the cool reception I typically receive in places of "beauty." I love beauty products (I'm a bit of a makeup and skincare junkie) but have never really had a warm welcome in "beauty industry" places so I tend to avoid "beauty specialty" in favor of self-service spots. My experience here was the polar opposite. I walked in on a mission and was greeted with so much warmth and joy by Brendan, the owner, that before I even left the store I'd followed him on Instagram and was excited to keep in touch. He coached me through application of very simple cheeks and eyes with the Kjaer Weis product I was looking for, and helped me pick out exactly what I needed (and I've used the palette with love as my daily AND for evening ever since -- it's my favorite make-up in my kit). And beyond that, his joyful and welcoming energy made me feel at home in a "place of beauty." I'm comfortable and confident referring ANY of my friends to Brendan (and have and do, regularly now) and am especially excited to have somewhere and someone to refer friends who aren't always received warmly by the beauty industry to (including my man-friends and trans- and gender non-binary friends who aren't always warmly received in "beauty spaces.") Both times I've visited, I've felt strongly that that Brendan's ability to help create external beauty is supercharged by his ability to see the beauty within in anyone who walks in the door and that is a very, very special gift. If you've heard the hype and are the type to avoid a spot because of it, do yourself a favor and stop in. My treat to myself for the new year will be to start a facial habit here -- it's WAY out of my way, and very much worth the drive, and I'm just so delighted to be able to support such a warm and welcoming local business instead of the big chain stores.

Step in, and the owner will give you a "tasting" similar to a wine tasting, except it will be an "olfactory" experience of delightful, subtle, and imaginative scents. I came across the Olfactory House first in Port Townsend, where the other co-owner lives. When I sampled their "fleur" perfume I was instantly seduced. But I'm not an impulsive buyer. Still, I could not get it off my mind and found their (closer to me) Seattle branch, but I walked by it on 5-6 occasions and found it closed. I finally found it open one afternoon. The Seattle co-owner gave me and another walk-in visitor the whole survey of their perfumes. It was a delightful, intelligent, sensory experience. I highly recommend you visit (and try to ensure they are open when you do visit) and get the "flight" of scents, where the owner explains the various influences, the sources of the scents, and then experience the smell. According to their Web site: "Many commercial perfume houses are shrouded in secret formulas, chemistry degrees, and a heavy reliance on the use of synthetic materials. Olfactory House uses absolutes, essential oils, tinctures, natural isolates, distilled grain alcohols, and safe, biodegradable, and renewable synthetics." I found this experience far superior to going to a department store and dealing with mass-manufactured, name-brand scents, and being confused about the samples you have tried as you get soaked in strong smells. The scents here do seem pure and close to the raw source and made by tinctures and distilling -- not "synthetic chemicals". I bought a couple of scents (one being a Pacific Northwest branded coastal/sea scent called "Merroir" and the other called "Space Pirate" which has some sophisticated notes of tobacco, citrus, and wood). I thought the price points were fair. Since then I have loved wearing the scents every morning. They are not overwhelming yet they are distinctive to me, and make me feel luxurious. Very cool experience.
