Elaine is what keeps Strauss running in tip-top shape- she knows all the residents by name (and their pets!), she looks out for the cleanliness and safety of residents at every opportunity, and she is someone you can trust to answer pretty much any question you have. Why should you pick Strauss over every other apartment building in the Bankers Hill/Hillcrest area? Because they don't have Elaine. The building has some nice amenities including a small gym, and honestly it was not not needing to pay for a membership elsewhere. There are also several bus routes nearby, so if you're a bus commuter like me, this location was great! And close proximity to Balboa Park just cannot be beat. Every neighbor we met was delightful, and if you didn't want to hear your neighbors, I swear not one time did we hear anyone through the walls. You would forget you even had neighbors. You'd think that should be the easy part but there's places where I couldn't even contact anyone. Everything has been a breeze from moving in to living here for almost a year now. Elaine does an amazing job keeping us in the loop when it comes to anything going on in the building or in the neighborhood so we always know if there's anything we need to be aware of or prepared for. When it comes to maintenance requests Martin is always very timely and on top of it whether it be something simple like changing a lightbulb or fixing/replacing appliances. Yaneli is constantly making sure the building is clean and smelling amazing in all the common areas. Overall living at Strauss has been great. I love the neighborhood, I really appreciate the staff and all the residents I've met or bumped into are very nice and respectful. Highly recommended!

The trash chute often didn't work, and the trash room regularly smelled bad with overflowing garbage and dirty, sticky floors. The parking gate is frequently left open or broken, which makes the garage feel unsafe. We also saw homeless individuals accessing the property and going through the trash. The most upsetting situation happened when our unit was flooded because of a sewer backup in the building (not caused by us). We lived with open walls and ongoing repairs for almost three weeks. For several days, very loud drying machines were running inside our apartment and using our electricity. Some of our personal care items were damaged. Management did offer a small concession, which we appreciate, but the situation took far too long to fix and caused a lot of stress and inconvenience. The only positive thing we can say is that the maintenance technician himself was professional and helpful when he came. In our opinion, this complex has noticeably declined recently. A few months ago, there was even a sign posted saying the elevator was "unstable," which was already concerning. Recently, that concern became very real when my husband was stuck inside the elevator for over an hour while we waited for emergency services because the elevator company couldn't respond in time. We live on the top floor, so reliable elevator access isn't optional--it's essential. Not knowing whether you'll be able to get in or out of your home safely is incredibly stressful. Unfortunately, the issues don't stop there. The garage gate is frequently broken, which creates both inconvenience and security concerns. On top of that, we've now lived in five different units in this building, and mold has been a recurring issue in more units than not. Overall, there seems to be a pattern of ongoing maintenance problems that aren't being fully resolved. I would strongly encourage anyone considering moving here to take these issues into account. Also, I reached out to management about the sign and they are saying it's a "false" notice, meaning either they put it up and if they didn't, another tenant was so worried they put up their own "beware" sign! From the leasing agents and managers to maintenance and the cleaning crew, the staff has been exceptional throughout my entire time there. Consistently professional, responsive, and kind, they truly set the tone for the building and make it feel like a place where people care. The building itself is spectacular. Walking through the entrance, you immediately feel the elegance and grandeur of this historic property. The balance of industrial elements--exposed brick, ducts, and steel staircases--with marble finishes and soaring ceilings genuinely elevates your quality of life. The gym is well-equipped with everything you need, and the lounge offers multiple spaces that can easily accommodate several events at once. It's also a pet-friendly building with regular community events. While some of these can feel more like quantity over quality, the book club is a clear exception and a true highlight. I met great people there and made friendships I expect to keep for life. There are a few things worth noting for prospective residents. Noise can be significant if you live on the lower floors, particularly on the west side of the building. My biggest criticism, however, is the parking situation with LAZ Parking, which is a separate entity. Trash often overflowed, stairwells were sometimes littered (occasionally with human excrement), and my car was hit while parked--only to be told the cameras didn't capture it. On another occasion, an open spot was changed to reserved overnight, resulting in my car being towed. There are also pockets around the building with unhoused individuals. The trolley area can feel overwhelmed at times, and the urban camping near the Red Cross has grown significantly. That said, the location is fantastic. There's an abundance of great food, walkable activities, and hidden gems nearby--from Seaport Village to Little Italy, plus countless spots to grab a cocktail or explore downtown. Her bike was stolen from behind her vehicle in the garage, vagabonds just come in dumpster diving and break into vehicles, and as soon as you step outside the front door of the building you smell nothing but dog and human piss!! The hallway smells disgusting, and if there's anything dribbled on the floors, it's there for DAYS!!!! Even DOG EXCREMENT!! She had a fridge that was leaking PUDDLES in and outside of it!! Ruining food, and costing her more in laundry/electricity due to having to consistently keep paper towels or cloth towels in front of it to sop up the water!! Oh, but was it repaired???? NO!!! It took her 5 damn months to get anyone to do anything about it, at which time it was finally replaced!!!! The folding doors never stay on the tracks and have fallen on us TWICE!!! When maintenance was here one day during one of my visits, I asked him to fix the door and was told "it wasn't his job"!! I said "you're a man, you can't just fix it"? He did put it back on the track, but it never stayed. They have signs to "clean up after your dog" but you go to grab a dog poop bag and there isn't any!!! I was here to assist my daughter during a high stress time in her life for five weeks, and the "amenities " were closed the entire time!!!!! FIVE WEEKS!!!! The elevators stink no matter which one you use, you can't get hot water (I think I could pee warmer), and the noise level is ridiculous including the fire alarm going off nearly weekly for months!!! How in the world can anyone justify this as livable????? And there's been three management changes in the year and a half my daughter has lived here and they've all been rude, condescending, and unaccommodating!!! The current manager treated me as if I was a child when instructing me how to use the key to unlock the front door of the building so I "don't destroy his door"!!!! Loved the location, noise ? sure, progress and upgrades can cause noise, results are great for community. Lois couldn't have been a more supportive manager and friend. Sometimes going out on a limb for his tenants. Was there for us when we needed his help. Obviously we would not have stayed such a long time if we were so unhappy. Alba has been with us from the start, she's always on top of communication answering all of our questions and concerns. Pete and Ruben are the friendliest grounds keepers and always will help with anything. These apartments are very well maintained, professionally cleaned and sanitized before move in and move out. It's very modern and roomy. Should anything need immediate maintenance they have onsite maintenance there 24/7. That also means if someone trips an alarm or something by accident you won't hear it for hours. Its a very nice gated community with surveillance cameras everywhere and on site patrol at night. The heating and a/c are top notch as well as all the other appliances. We rarely ran into issues but if we did it was fixed super fast. The staff have special events every so often for children as well as free pizza or raffles to win things like full thanksgiving meals, etc. Parking is great theres plenty for cars needing charging stations or cover. The amazon package hub and mail are very secure, easy to use. We had two dogs and it was easy to get them to the designated dog pen. Its all kept very clean! There are so many amazing places nearby to eat and the bay is just up the street! If you're nervous to apply like we were because we had a lot going on at the time that sounded complicated to explain, just try! The staff are very understanding and will try to help you succeed. We are very thankful for the chance we had. There really isn't anything negative to report, we loved this apartment and they were always fair never asking for large increases in rent renewals. They also give plenty of advance notice for fire alarm testing, main hallway carpet cleaning, elevator maintenance, and any in unit quick inspections for yearly fire sprinkler upkeep that is just fast in and out look. Again, I highly recommend living here, it was an easy 3 yrs and we were very comfortable here.

They are all very friendly, professional, and hardworking; they have also gone out of their way to help me a few times which was so nice! The grounds are always kept clean, it's secure and quiet. There is also roaming security at night which is a bonus. The apartments are beautiful and it's really nice to be able to enjoy a pool, jacuzzi, gym, and clubhouse. I'm so happy to have chosen Del Oro. Highly recommend!

I moved in only a month ago and everything has been wrong. I move in and everything is backwards. The lock to my door was outside the bathroom. Towel rack to bathroom door was inside the shower. Plugged an air purifier on one side of the wall with nothing else plugged in and the whole circuit cuts. I place work orders in and they mark it as done and in fact it has not. I have cameras in my apt and shows no one comes in to even work on the place. it's been 2 weeks now I've put in a work order for my shower head to be replaced and they said it has to be ordered. 2 weeks to get it replaced and it's still not fixed. speaking of cameras, I get notification and almost every evening, you have security taking pics of my front door for whatever reason. I email asking about it, no response. I have also paid for application fee and take in consideration I'm already moved in and their portal still says I owe that. I've submitted statement that it's been paid.. and just still a month a later, still waiting for it to be removedI GET PERMISSION TO PARK IN THEIR PARKING GARAGE from one of their property managers and several hours later I get towed which cost me $475 for a day. I then receive confirmation from their mgr that it was their security who called in to get it towed. shouldn't that have been communicated to employees??? I request for call backs from their manager Cara and NOT ONCE has she called me back. POOR COMMUNICATION AND SERVICE. I can't wait for the year to be done and over with and get away from this property and I'd assume all their properties thats managed by them. It's no wonder why they have so many vacancies and you are able to negotiate your rent with them. They're desperate to get tenants in I'm assuming. I've been polite., nice... and I've just had enough. A MONTH LATER! Elevators is broken every 3-6 months and they take several months to get it back up and working - when I lived on the 2nd floor it wasn't a big deal but once l moved up to the 5th floor I absolutely dread it. They would constantly say that they are trying to get it fixed but would just sit on their ass and do nothing. The last 5 months of staying with Elan Luxo the handle to the trash shoot broke off and never got fixed - instead they opted into us going down to the floor below us to use their trash shoot which was also broken. Ventilation in the all of their units absolutely sucks. At most you get your patio and bedroom window if you're looking for any type of ventilation/fresh air. Washer/dryer in both units that l've stayed in were disgusting. Mold build-up upon move-in. (All photos are from my second unit/ 5th floor-apt502) Handles to literally everything were broken or missing. Billed roughly an extra $120-$160/monthly on top of your base rent on just the trash alone. You share the dumpster with Harumama which means you're paying for their trash essentially. Also Harumama employees park their cars/motorcycles all throughout the parking structure (handicap, no parking zones, in front of their back door) which is annoying when residents are trying to get in and out of the parking structure. All of this and you let management know about any of it and they brush it aside or don't even get back to you. The only good thing about this place is location.
