I was there about 6 months ago and forgot to leave a review! I also wanted to give the product some time to make sure I didn't jump the gun. I'll start by saying that he has my dream job. The store is the absolute best it can be for the space. Asheville makes you want to play outside. A stark difference from living in Florida. He didn't push anything on me. I came in for a travel guitar, as I was regularly running into the problem of having space to bring one. So I'd end up buying a piece of junk from a pawn shop every time I'd travel, then donating it. It wasn't cheap, but he gave me an amazing deal on a journey travel guitar that blew my mind with the ergonomics and design. I looked it up and I walked out the door for less than I could have ordered one directly. He didn't nickel and dime me for some strings, capo and picks either. I think I paid about 20% of what they would have been priced at, had I not bought a $1300 guitar. Most importantly, he was incredibly kind to my family. I am a ball of stress when my kids are in a store with "don't touch" items of high dollar amounts. He even let my son briefly noodle on a fancy Ukulele. He's learning guitar and that one fit him. You can't find that kind of kindness at a big name store. I will always pay a visit to this shop whenever I visit for vacation. Eddie can even give me a call if he'd like to franchise one in West Palm Beach! I'd give 6 stars if I could. read more

Interesting store with some nice high end acoustics and amps. I find the owner a bit trying. His lower end stuff is common at other stores and you can probably negotiate a better deal than through Area 22. If you are looking for a certain high end acoustic brand that the store carries, this is a good stop. read more

They have an amazing selection of local handmade guitars and amps. It's a small one man shop where you can get great informative service. It's not ideal for going in to just play on a bunch of guitars on your own, as the owner takes such care of each guitar as he gets it off the rack and prepares it for you to play. Because of this though, every guitar is in mint condition. He also sells some amazing microphones. I recently purchased an Ear Trumpet Labs Josephine Microphone there to use with my Eastman acoustic guitar that I also got from there. Both are amazing and I get compliments on them at every gig. read more

Eddie said it was a great sounding dobro and I was not disappointed! He also upgraded the free shipping to 2 day air. Well packed and arrived safely. My 19 year old son got a guitar from a family friend when he was 14 and beginning to learn guitar. It's very sentimental to him and us. We took it in to Area 22 Guitars to get new strings and have it tuned up. The guitar isn't fancy; it was low end for beginners but has been great for him as he's learned to play throughout the years. The owner restrung it and tuned it up and while doing so, he broke the bridge. It cracked. He called my son and told him, then my son told me. I called the owner to see if he was going to make this right. Give money or at least not charge us. He said "of course I'm charging you! I did the work!" I said, "but you broke the guitar!" He said "that guitar is a toy. It's cheap and it's a toy!" (It's not a toy. Our friend works at a nice music store in SC and he got it for my son there. It's lower end, like i said, but NOT a toy)! I said "this guitar isn't expensive but it's good and sentimental and all we wanted was new strings. You broke it and need to make this right." He wouldn't hear of it. I called the sheriff's office asking if there's anything I could do. He was very sympathetic with me and wished he could help but legally there was nothing he could do. He said this man is a bad business man and that I should give a review in several places and report to the BBB. The guitar does play, but the crack is significant and could crack open at any time. The owner said he didn't know how long it would stay in tact. He charged me $41 for new strings and tuning. Now my son has a sentimental guitar that could split at any time. This is disgusting on every level. The owner was condescending and arrogant. I told him that he at least should have told me he doesn't work on "toys" when we walked in and at least we'd still have a good working guitar! Pathetic. Bad business. And he doesn't care. read more

Every time I enter the store, I leave with a bad taste in my mouth... And it starts with the owner. The man is condescending, and it seems he isn't interested unless you play a boutique instrument. All my guitars are from main stream manufacturers and a few are quite expensive, yet somehow he looks down his nose at me, and them. 60 years in the music business has taught me a lot, and Area 22 is not for me. I won't waste my time in there ever again. read more

This shop may not appeal to everybody, in that they only carry certain lines of guitars - Breedlove, St. Blues, Rowan Custom - and relatively high-end equipment by Buddha, and Bad Cat. The shop is stocked with some nice stuff, and they carry all the necessities like picks, tuners, capos, etc...Not to mention they also offer lessons. The owner is a great guy and an excellent player so whatever your level of playing he'd make a great teacher. Most music here in the mountains focuses on bluegrass and acoustic, and if that isn't your style then until now you have been out of luck. With the addition of Area 22 though, all that has changed. Guitar shops tend to be great places to just drop-in and hang out, so I highly recommend doing just that. Check it out, look at the equipment, drool, and try to absorb as much as you can! read more

Being a college town with a prominent music program I thought there would be many... My wife and I decided to stop by Area 22 for a look... The store has its stock nicely displayed and the owner (I assumed he was the owner) was friendly. I asked to try a neat little Vox AC4 and he was very helpful and accommodating... the price was fair being identical to online merchants so I bought the amp.
