My mom's 18th birthday present back in the day was a full set of upper dentures. I have an older sibling who has dentures. Ugh. So I sucked it up and headed here upon the recommendation of my dentist to increase the upkeep on my still kinda pearly Irish chompers. Dr. Joe is a really nice guy. I did some research on him and found out he went to Harvard, which, if you mention it, he waves away as though it's nothing. He and his staff were very careful to explain everything that was going on, and what I needed to have done, while tedious, was not bad at all to deal with. They are great about keeping on you about checking in with how you are doing as you heal up. Other than it seems like most patients I've seen are at least 20 years older than me, and are being picked up after their appointments by their children while I can still drive, I am adjusting to the fact that there is no shame to getting some additional dental help. It's even kind of cute seeing all these who are around the age my parents would be if they were still around.

Right away, he suspected a very rare (1 in 1,000,000) auto-immune disease called Pemphigoid. I believe he has seen only two cases of this in his entire career. My regular dentist had never seen it. Dr. Bernstein did a biopsy on my gums and confirmed his suspicions. From what I know now, some people with this go for years before getting a proper diagnosis. It took me one visit to Dr. Bernstein and a follow-up for the biopsy. Kudos to Dr. Bernstein!

The reason I say this is because when I was initially referred to his office, his staff honestly advised me to complete my dental work (braces) first before even considering the Crown Lengthening procedure. If his staff did not care about the final outcome and satisfaction of his patients, I believe that I would have been persuaded into having the procedure done right away. There are a few ways that make his way of practicing unique that I really appreciate. One way is that his staff greeted me by first name, with a genuine smile, and pronounced my name correctly each and every time. I know this took great effort and it made our relationship feel a bit more personal instead of doctor and patient and making me feel like a number. Another way is that Dr. Morales' staff always addressed my concerns and/or made sure to communicate them to him. I never left his office feeling unsure about something he or his staff explained to me despite the many questions/concerns that I had. Lastly, his personality is unique in that he is personable and easy to talk to. This really helped because like many patients, initially, I was anxious about being in his office and not sure of his communication style despite being confident in his work. The process was very streamlined and any changes were communicated well in advance. In addition, he was very flexible with my schedule, very accommodating, and took great pride in his work.
