    Chicken arepa
    Audra H.

Stopped at duck foot tonight to get some gluten free beer. After just completing the whole30 , I didn't realize I'd be in for a gluten free treat of Venezuelan food! There wasn't a menu that stated what I could order so I was unsure. However, the woman was very kind and showed me the food and explained how everything was made! I ordered a chicken arepa. It comes with guacamole, cheese, sour cream cilantro sauce, black beans, and plantains. It was deliciousness. The arepa itself is crunchy on the outside, and softer on the inside. It works similarity to a taco...wrapped and the ingredients inside! My only complaint is that it cost $11...seems a bit steep. I've eaten at other food trucks and it's cost $12 for a burger and fries. This didn't have a side. Despite it all, I would come back again and have another if they were at duck foot again and I was hungry!

Walking through the farmer's market in Poway yesterday and I was so excited to see arepas on a grill but we were on our way out so I kept walking. Almost got to the car and decided to go back I had to have one. As a half-Colombian arepas are one of my favorite foods and I can usually only get them at festivals so I had to go back and grab one. When I got to the stand I realized it wasn't Colombian arepas after seeing the menu but still wanted to sample what they had. The owner gave a presentation on the most popular version to order (totally forgot what it was called but it started with a P) and got the attention of several people walking by. Genius marketing for the food being cooked. I was just going to order the arepa con queso but ended up ordering the version he was advertising just vegetarian style. It starts with a steaming hot arepa fresh off the grill so nice and crisp on outside and light and airy center. He splits it open then he adds a bunch of cheese, a spatula of avocado to both sides of the inside, a spoonful of black beans and then a single platano, and then everyrhing topped with a squeeze of fresh cilantro sauce. I watched in awe just amazed at all the delicious ingredients going in and just thought it was so interesting to add the platano inside. How could it be bad when it had all of my favorite ingredients?! It was absolutely spectacular. Packed with flavor, crisp, savory, sweet and so filling. $10 is fair with all the fresh ingredients being packed in and everything cooked right in front of you. I just had brunch shortly before stopping by the stand but it didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying it. A definite interesting twist to the usual way I eat my arepas but still totally satisfied the craving. Gracias Allan! Que riquísimo!!

Located at the Scripps Ranch Farmer's Market, Arepex is treating patrons with some fine Velenzualan eats with down to earth friendly service. I ordered the Chicken or Angel Arepa with avocado, cheese, and a nice sauce for $8. The arepa, made from a white ground maiz or corn flour was very well made. Also, I may add that they make the arepa mixture and form the cakes on sight. The arepa had a good crispiness on the outside and was soft and delicate on the inside. They clean out some of the cooked maiz inside the arepa to fill it with its ingredients. The Velenzualan seasoned shreded chicken was very tasty and well season. It was to bad the arepa came with to much cheese, because it obscured the flavor of the chicken. Also, it would of been nice if they would of used a good traditional Velenzualan cheese, like a Queso de Palmita or a Queso Guayanés which are commonly used in Arepas. Here, they used a yellow and white shredded blend that was similar or was a cheddar and Monterrey Jack cheese mix. The Arepa came with a very good amount of fresh avocado delicious avocado. A little salt on it would of good a long way, but it was great in the Arepa nevertheless. They did not offer a fresh salsa with the arepa, but simply a Srirracha hot sauce. It would of been just grand with they would offer a Mojo de Cilantro y Perejil fresh salsa with the arepa. The two ladies working the booth were very sweet and nice. I learned that they are hoping to open up a restaurant and I do look forward for that day.

I stumbled upon this Farmer's Market arepa stand last Tuesday in Mira Mesa. I saw a woman hand making and forming white corn arepa dough. I looked at their menu and thought $8 bucks wasn't too bad of a price to finally try my first Venezuelan arepa. Allan (the owner) suggested I try the chicken arepa with avocado (+$1 more). He said it was the best item on the menu. Sounds good to me. They gave me samples of both the chicken and beef to try out. Glaivmar, the nice woman making the arepa, finally started to prep one for me when the arepa dough was ready. This was the part I was anticipating most. She took an arepa off the grill and proceeded to cut it in half. She scoops out the soft mushy interior and squeezes the arepa open even more. Then she adds cheese, then the chicken, then a different type of cheese, avocado, cilantro sauce, and then the sriracha sauce. They taught me how to eat this Guy Fieri style - no kidding. While standing, spread your legs apart, hunch over, and then take a bite because this chicken arepa is juicy and will get all over your shoes and shirt if you don't Guy Fieri it ( damn it - did I just use Guy Fieri as a VERB). I liked the arepa and it tasted, to me, kinda like a very stuffed chicken taco in a corn tortilla. I could definitely taste the corn in the arepa dough and I liked the nice crunch it had from being pan fried on the griddle. There was quite a bit of yummy liquid from the chicken as the arepa soon started to drip the (tumeric colored?) liquid from the chicken. I could taste the abundant melted cheese(s) and I liked the creaminess the avocado brought to the arepa. I was really surprised how the sriracha didn't overpower this arepa - I'd ask for more next time as I thought it brought this dish to another level. Please keep in mind that this was my first time having a Venezuela arepa so I'm still figuring out what I like and don't like about it. I only managed to take a bite or two before I asked them to package it to go. They said the aprepa could be easily reheated in an oven or better yet, a panini grill. It was a fun quick snack that I'll have to enjoy later on (probably for breakfast). I'm finally happy to say that I tried an arepa. At a Farmer's Market. In Mira Mesa of all places. These guys were quite knowledgeable and so nice. I asked if I could take a picture of their stand and they wanted to hold their company's banner for the pic. They do accept credit cards and there wasn't an extra fee to do so. I thought my $9.27 (including tax) was a fair price for what was given to me that afternoon (plus I learned a lot about arepas as well). They are at the Mira Mesa Farmer's Market each Tuesday from 2:30p-7p (current market hours). Arepex Grill is a fun spot to try out especially if you've never had an arepa before.

CUSTOMER SERVICE- 5 STARS The vendors are really friendly! FOOD- 3.5 STARS Overall pretty good, but the wrapping is a littler harder than my preference. Can be a little hard to chew and stick to your teeth. They really stuff the arepa for you so you can get a lot of meat and toppings. :) PRICING- 3 STARS A little pricey, but it is pretty large. OVERALL IMPRESSION Definitely worth a try! Different taste than your typical taco or burrito.

I can only speak about my dish as I didn't have a taste of the other meal. I had the El Vainero (sweet corn pancake with Mano cheese, shredded beef, black beans and plantains). The flavors were so amazing together. You will just have to try it. I also ordered yuca fries. The three types of "sauces" were mild, medium, and hot. All three were tasty in their own way and I enjoyed all of them with the yuca fries and towards the end of my meal, it added a little kick to my dish. As for beverages, we had water and I ordered the hot chocolate. I know, hot chocolate, but it was so good. I love an authentic cup of hot chocolate with a bit of real whip cream and some cinnamon. In all, our experience at Encuentro Cafe was great from the service to the food. It is very intimate and we ate in the covered patio. It was as it would be eating outside with tropical decor. Not crowded and noise level as it would be eating in an enclosed patio, not too noisy with the sounds of Old Town patrons walking/driving down the street. I will definitely look forward to visiting this restaurant again when I visit San Diego.

As a Colombian who has been craving authentic Colombian cuisine since my last visit to New York in…read moreDecember, I can confidently say this restaurant truly satisfied those cravings. Being nearly eight months pregnant, my expectations were especially high, and it is rare to find a place that meets them so well. From the seasoning of the food to the warm and attentive service, everything about this restaurant stands out. Although I don't recall my server's name, he was incredibly kind and provided excellent service throughout. The ambiance is also worth noting--the space is large, offers plenty of seating options, and even features a large TV, making it a great spot to relax or watch sports. To start, I ordered a watered mango juice along with a beef empanada. The empanada exceeded my expectations--despite being on the smaller side, it was packed with flavor. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered five more to go, which speaks for itself. They were served with fresh ají, a traditional sauce that complemented them perfectly. For my main course, I had the carne asada plate, which included steak, rice, beans, sweet plantains, avocado, tomato slices, and a small arepa. Every component of the dish was well-executed--the beans were flavorful, the meat was well-seasoned, and the overall plate felt authentic. It is often difficult to find truly authentic Colombian food, especially in San Diego, where options are limited or not genuinely Colombian. This restaurant, however, delivers on authenticity and flavor. The portion size was generous, and I ended up taking leftovers home to enjoy later. In addition to the empanadas (two chicken and three beef), I also ordered a buñuelo and a cheese arepa to go. Unfortunately, these items did not meet the same standard. The arepa lacked flavor and was overly greasy, and the buñuelo was dry and similarly oily, even after absorbing excess grease from the bag. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Colombian food, especially given how rare it is to find quality options in this area. Friends of mine visited recently as well and thoroughly enjoyed their bandeja paisa, further confirming the consistency of the food. I will definitely be returning--especially for those empanadas.
