The store has supplies for almost every pet from chicken coops and rabbit hutches to frog enclosures, bird cages and fish bowls. Food - nobody will go hungry as there's a wide variety, even your pet lizard can have a mouth full of crickets or two with a selection of small, medium or large fresh crickets. All their prices are reasonably good too. I brought Chester here for his annual vaccination ( proudly adopted him from the RSPCA) and John immediately took over Chester, talking to him calmly ( too cute!) and did the basic steps of taking his weight, checking his eyes, body and so forth. Booster shots given and with a clean bill of health, we finalised the necessary payment and commended Dr. John for a great consultation. The reception is usually manned by one staff who is well trained and I was extremely happy when she displayed knowledge on booster shots for adult cats. Clean and spotless premises with a great doctor and friendly staff on board.

They didn't have heaps of little/young puppies and these were the only 2 we really liked. So a lady that worked there opened the cage and let us go in with them. She came up to us stright away and was so inquisitive. So we decided to get her. Well apparently since we had a dog already we were required to go home and get our existing dog and bring it up to the RSPCA to be put inside a larger enclosure with us AND the new puppy we wanted. If all was ok THEN we could buy the dog. Well all went well and we walked out with a new puppy :-) Considering you get a desexed and vaccinated animal, and in fact mine was even microchipped (which also saves money on dog registration each year with my council) it is really cheap as there is a set price for a dog, cat and rabbit. So it doesn't matter which one you choose or what breed it is, which is great. They have an excellent website where you can view pets they have available at the shelter. They also have boarding kennels and a cattery if you have to go away. I even noticed a horse in one of the area's this time I went.

The follow up service with our kitten has been non-existent. We were told on the day of adoption that we would receive a call 1 week later to arrange a time for the first round of vaccinations and desexing. We didn't. After we queried our cat's slightly weepy eye on the day of adoption the "local vet" at the shelter at the time said it was only conjunctivitis. Not so, it was Cat Flu. I can understand it is hard to reduce cases of cat flu in a shelter. I can also understand they must be run off their feet here. But since following up to book our kitten in for desexing the woman on the phone was abrupt and generally inconsiderate. It is highly inconvenient to try and book in to the vet (only on weekdays and out at Elizabeth) and to be honest I do not trust the "local vet" who did not warn us that conjunctivitis is an obvious symptom of cat flu on the day of adoption. Our kitten is fine and now healthy (thanks to a local vet), I just wouldn't get our next from this shelter that is clearly a bit too overwhelmed, burdened and unprofessional in their management of their little ones and who I have since heard have adopted out at least 2 other cats with cat flu to friends of mine.

With a few volunteers around various areas and in the shelter itself, I am completely in awe with what they achieve, looking after kitties, making sure they are desexed, and promoting responsible pet ownership. We have 3 rescue cats (yes, we're officially 'crazy cat ladies'!), and our third one, Rosie, came from here. She had been at HSTFO for 12 months, but she adjusted to her new home (and new sisters) pretty quickly! Of course, what you pay for the cats go directly to the shelter, and is minimal anyway (just covering costs of vet bills and food that you take with you) - Rosie, as an adult cat, was only $130 - much more responsible than buying a pure breed! So if you're thinking of inviting a cat into your home, PLEASE consider visiting Nicky! She has over 100 cats, so there is sure to be one to suit your home and family. With so many cats wanting furrever homes, it would be ridiculous not to!

They have a good range of pet 'accomodation' and some scratching posts for the kitties. I have tried them with my cats from time to time over the years, but I think they are snobs because they seem to prefer micro fibre suede or leather between their claws rather than tightly wound rope......bloody stuck up cats!

They do sell puppies, which I personally don't agree on any pet shop doing as breeder direct is better, but anyway. The owner and staff are friendly enough and certainly know their products and what can help with a minor ailment, otherwise it's a trip to the vet down the road. They also have a massive range of fish for sale, which my niece makes a beeline for every time we visit, as well as puppies and kittens every now and then. They're friendly and welcoming, and you WILL need to keep your eyes peeled for the pastel pink fluffy chicken that pecks around like it owns the place. Which it might.... I'd always duck into Northside Pet Superstore when I was going past, after picking up some quite…read morerare fish for an absolute steal - browsing through all the standard guppies, tetras, platys and goldfish - nothing really unusual there, but it is a pet store, not a specialised aquarium shop - I found a tank full of algae eaters - again nothing unusual (and word of warning, they're only algae eaters when they're young, and hungry - as they get bigger, and find they can eat the food your other fish are getting, they get lazy - and they'll also latch on to slow moving fish, and use them as food too - not nice fish sometimes) except for five fish that definitely weren't your everyday algae eater - tall fins, and a much more elongated shape. I asked a staff member what they were, she told me algae eaters - I took a chance on them, as they looked really interesting, and I knew I could find homes for them even if they weren't compatible with my fish, and took two of the 'algae eaters' home. Turned out they were a variety of Hemoloptera - lovely fish that don't grow too big, and sell for about ten times the price of an algae eater - and when I went back for the other three the next day they even gave me a discount on them... *bonus* :) That aside, I see a good stock of the regular fish. There's often a special on something, tetras, goldies or guppies, which probably reflects a discount they've gotten from the suppliers, but it never hurts to get a good bargain. Overall the store looks good - I don't pay a lot of attention to the rest of the livestock, unless the kids are with me, but they have a good range of animals and products.

Having an Italian greyhound means ALOT of money goes in to weird niche dog things the breed needs, one of which is a special tooth gel. Long story short I saved myself a good thirty dollars because this store is the only one in Adelaide that randomly carries it so five stars for getting in super niche things essential to particular breeds. But what REALLY impressed me was the knowledge the staff had, they let us know about the puppy school they host which was under $100 for five classes (something most other dog stores don't do), gave me loads of tips about introducing my two dogs, tips about the breed and best yet they didn't pressure me to buy any dumb little add-ons at the counter (because like all pet owners we spend our rent money on stacks of dog toys as it is). They have bulk food in huge bags that you nearly need a forklift to carry; a wide range of collars, toys, harnesses, bowls, beds, water dispensers, flea and worm treatment, and a plethora of pet pampering products. They even have a dog washing station that we have used one Saturday. It was a bit traumatic for our little dogs though, so may be better for a medium to large dog.
