This company tells all the local art studios that they give 20% discount to their students -getting free advertising and encouraging us to support the local business. Yet I've spoken to several people who've requested said discount only to be told it's not good on sale items and then be told that all the items you were buying were on sale. This exact thing happened to me today yet my receipt did not show one discounted item. They are one of the very, very few places in Tucson where you can actually feel the paper and try the pens, which is a big part of shopping for new art supplies. Service has always been as it should be, friendly and knowledgeable. They aren't the cheapest place to shop, but this is where we need to ask whether "cheap" is the only thing that matters? I've bought a lot of things online that ended up sitting, unused, and ultimately given away. I really like this store! First time here, and I'm trying to visit as many art stores out here in Tucson for my mini vacation. I found a brand of Strathmore sketchbooks that is rare to find; they have a leather cover and binding or some with ring binding, and the cover comes in a dark brown. I found one for watercolor; ringed binding, and each page of watercolor paper is separated by a thinner sheet of paper. I love that! Back to the store... they have a large variety of supplies and unique things. Sort of reminds me of Blick's in California. Student discounts are also available. read more

I had only walked by this place a couple times and never been in until a couple weeks ago. My nephew is an artist and really into architecture, so I came here looking for some Christmas gifts for him. Not knowing much, I asked a lady at the counter, and she was really helpful. She helped me get some good erasers and sketch pads, and my husband found some nice pens too. Curious, I compared the store's prices to Amazon and I was surprised to see that AZ Art Supply had better prices, and I much prefer to support local when I can. The cashier gave me a student discount, because my nephew is going to college, but she did say she usually requires a student ID. I thought that was really nice, and the discount was 20%. I've had hit or miss experiences with Arizona Art Supply, and subpar experience with their online customer service. I will mainly focus on in-store experiences until the online support is relevant, though. On one visit, the staff was super helpful, nice, and eager to be of help. I found what I was looking for easily, and even a new brand of paint to try that I ended up really liking because the employee went that extra mile to listen to me and help. At that point, I was willing to pay their pretty steep mark up to shop here, because I'm all for supporting smaller shops. On my next visit, one employee was very cold, even slightly rude. She made a snide remark about a brush I was buying. I guess it was too beginner for her? I'm not really sure, but she acted like it. I didn't think much of it because, meh, I like what I like and she means nothing to me. So I didn't let it tarnish my opinion of the store until I put it together with my next visit. On my third and final visit to AZ Art Supply, I pulled up in the spot right in front of the door with admittedly only like 4 minutes to spare until closing. There were still 5-6 customers in the store, and I only wanted to pick up a single brush. So I got out of my car as fast as I could to run in. But I wasn't fast enough! An employee ran to the door (seriously she at least power walked) and locked me out as I was lifting my hand to the door handle! I thought this was incredibly rude. I stood there with my mouth agape that an employee would be that blatant about not wanting my business. I know that they couldn't know that I was only buying a single item and that I wasn't going to hold them up from closing, but for a small store, I would have hoped they would give the benefit of the doubt and allow me to shop even still. This is where online customer support comes in. I messaged them about this, and one person seemed apologetic, but directed me to someone else. I emailed that person, who simply replied, "Sorry, but we hope to see you in the store soon!" Seriously, it was one sentence. I'm not even sure why I was directed to this person to get such a blah kind of response. So no, you won't see me again. Arizona Art Supply has the best selection of art goods as far as the small art stores in Tucson go (which isn't saying much, Posners is usually full of dusty shelves as is Sarnoff). Their prices are hugely marked up, like not even acceptable for some stuff. I was willing to pay a bit of premium to shop here, but if they're going to be rude, then I'm perfectly ok with spending less at Michaels or online retailers. Hopefully one day Tucson gets a real art store. read more

'May' helped me select watercolor paper and quickly located a white gel pen and a scrubber so I didn't have to look for those items. She even gave me a restaurant recommendation. This is my favorite art store of all time. First of all, they have everything in stock that I came to purchase--and more! You'll find things at this store that no other art store would have in stock. I've been looking for an alternative to shopping at Michael's and/or buying everything on Amazon. I don't need to do that anymore. Thanks to Arizona Art Supply. After I discovered this store (on Yelp) I was instantly greeted by very genuinely kind people with art backgrounds (the employees ) and at my request, they let me wander the store and discover what it had to offer. When I was finished basking in my awe-struck wonder, as I shopped, I was able to finally find the words I needed to finally ask some questions. I was so happy to find so many premium brands of paints, brushes, paper and even watercolor crayons, AND I found every color I could have wished to buy! I could go on. I love this store. I appreciate and really feel comfortable talking with the employees. My husband bought me gift cards for Arizona Art Supply for Christmas. I couldn't be happier. I am new to the area and was thrilled to find a decently supplied art store. I am a working artist and though I purchase most of my supplies online, I am always glad to find a local store for those instantly gratified needs that arise. I recently bought some pastels and misc and what looked like a decent travel case to carry my soft pastels. Without purchasing the case, one is unable to adequately assess it, as it is completely shrink wrapped. I was going on a trip and was hoping this case would work to protect my expensive soft pastels. So I bought it. It was certainly reasonable, however it was very poorly constructed. It swelled in the heat, which we have plenty of in the SW and the pull out drawer would not pull out. I ended up having to force it only to discover it had also crushed some of my Sennelier pastels. Upon my return home only a few days after purchase, I brought it back showing the poor construction and tight drawer. I was very politely told that since I didn't have the original packaging and I obviously had used it, she could not "re-sell" it and therefore would not allow its return. What?? Re-sell a faulty bad product?? The loss of what I paid is acceptable, however the policy is not. They should stand behind what they sell and return to the manufacturer that which does not meet professional standards. I am disappointed and will likely not return and continue my support of online sales. This is a sad statement for independent business. read more

Let me start by saying that Michaels sucks. I'd thought I'd found a good deal on 32x40 mat board there and I was excited when I got a coupon via email. When I got to the store, an employee very brusquely told me the coupon wasn't valid on that particular mat board, even though the coupon didn't have restrictions on ANY framing items. Enter Arizona Art Supply. Their regular price on that mat board was cheaper, there's a 20% discount on regular price items with student ID, and Holly with the awesome curls was super helpful and pleasant. (Apparently they'll also trim mat board for $0.25 per cut). Suck it, Michaels. Buy local. I will definitely be visiting this place again. read more

I love art supplies. I love artists. It's no wonder I love this store. They have a great selection and seem to be hosting in-house art events all the time. I've been to this store a few times, always looking for paper and various drawing supplies (graphite and charcoal being my favorites) and never being disappointed. On my most recent visit I was looking to try out a variety of charcoal pencils. I had visited two other art supply stores - Posner's Art Supply and Sarnoff Art and had found a few at each location. But Arizona Art Supply, once again, blew me away. Huge selection of pencils for me to choose from. I even found some graphite new (to me) pencils that I'd not seen before. Score! I have been shopping at Arizona Art Supply for the past few years (sorry it's taken me so long to write a review!), and it's my favorite place to indulge myself with impulse purchases, as well as my favorite place to go to pick up some new tools and equipment. I feel their prices on brushes, paints, and paper are very fair, and they have frequent sales as well. If you are a student or teacher they offer a 20% discount on non-sale items if you show them a student/teacher ID. Shopping at Arizona Art Supply I have discovered some tools I would not have discovered or been able to try out if I was shopping online. I have found new papers I love, as well as some great brushes, to name a few. I do think they could add more varieties of pens for calligraphers (nibs, nicer dip pens, more varieties of Tombow pens) as well as adding some more variety to their watercolor/gouache paints (Prima watercolors would be fun). Overall, this is a great store if you are looking to try something new but don't want to commit to a new form of art. It's also a great place for all your basic (and advanced!) tools. They also have classes in different mediums, and the staff is always eager to help and incredibly friendly, as well as knowledgable regarding the supplies for sale. read more

They have a really good selection, there are always sales, and the staff there is super friendly and very knowledgable. They also have a lot of cool classes/workshops. They are clearly an Arizona chain with several stores and they use their buying power to get some stonking good deals. As an amateur artist, I was excited to see what this store had to offer. Initially after entry, I was delighted to see that this store actually supports local artists, going as far as to hang up their art on the walls. Not only that, I am on a budget and while I have preference for specific brands of media, they were open to taking the time to suggest different brands and even had tried some of the products themselves. It's nice to know that the associates all have a love for the arts and actively try their products. They even went as far as to suggest a better paper(which was cheaper) because of the "toothyness" which is better for charcoal. Arizona art supply has always taken very good care of me. But I have had several instances of service above and beyond the call of duty. One time the owner drove down from Phoenix with some out-of-stock supplies that I needed so that I could meet a deadline. Today I drove across town to pick up something that a new employee thought they had. When I got there and they didn't have it, I was obviously a little frustrated. But because I love this store so much I let it go. The manager came out to my car and brought me a canvas, free of charge, for my troubles. Now that is customer service!
