If you're looking for a "dip your toes in and call it adventure" kind of trip, this ain't it. This is the real deal and Arizona River Runners delivers it with a throttle. I went the motorized raft route, and I'll tell you straight, it's the perfect balance of thrill and sanity. You've got young guns, older folks, everybody laughing, holding on, and living the same moment. One minute you're punching through rapids, the next you're cruising those calm stretches at a steady clip, maybe 8 mph, just soaking it all in. And that's the beauty of it, you cover serious ground without sacrificing the experience. If you don't have 10 days to disappear into the canyon but still want to feel it in your bones, this is your move. Now listen, getting on the water in Grand Canyon isn't something you just wake up and decide to do. Permits, reservations, planning...this is high demand, bucket list territory. You do your homework, plan ahead, and you can make it happen. You wait till the last minute? Good luck. This isn't your local float trip. And then there's the part nobody really prepares you for. The canyon messes with you in a good way, mostly. I swear this is the second time I've felt like I saw Bigfoot out there. Not joking. Starts making you wonder, is it one Bigfoot, multiple, is he just pacing the canyon like he owns it? Add in a little déjà vu, the silence, the scale of it all, your mind starts wandering places you didn't expect. Daytime, it's raw. Sun beating down, heat cooking you alive, jumping into the river whether it looks crystal clear or straight up brown just to cool off. Nighttime, whole different world. Stars like you've never seen, Milky Way stretched across the sky, dead quiet except for the river and a crackling fire. Cold drink in hand, swapping stories, realizing you're sitting in one of the most unreal places on earth. But don't get it twisted, this place demands respect. The canyon is massive, and it'll remind you quick how small you are. People make it through just fine until they don't. Heat, terrain, isolation, it's not forgiving. There are spots out there where if something goes sideways, you're not just hiking your way out. That's part of what makes it real. End of the day, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. There's something about finishing a trip like this, grateful, a little humbled, maybe a little paranoid about Bigfoot, but knowing you just experienced something most people never will. read more

The food was amazing. We were all impressed with the guides organizational skills and their cooking . We heard all the stories about the formation of the Grand Canyon and the history of its exploration. We got to hike to some spectacular locations. We rafted 6 days from Lees Ferry to Pipeline Beach then hiked out on Bright Angel Trail. We are already making plans to return and raft from Pipeline to the end. Wonderful, professional and friendly crew. Great food amazing experience with the wonderful trilogy side hikes to mystical waterfalls and Indian villages and amazing white water exciting rafting. This trip is not for the faint at heart because it is quite strenuous. However, I managed perfectly well at just one week short of my 80th birthday, even though we had to clamber on and off the raft every day set up our little campsite sleeping courts, and then load up in the morning. Other rafters were extremely helpful and the crew was amazing. I even took my carbon fiber, travel guitar with me and entertained the group with Grand Canyon rafting songs on the beach late at night. read more

This was an amazing trip! I highly recommend putting this trip on your bucket list! The views of the canyon, the history, seeing rocks that were billions of years old, experiencing the rapids, doing the side hikes, swimming in the LCR, hiking Havasu, the river guides, the food they provided and the new friends we met. All of it, made this trip the best of our lifetime. I initially communicated and booked my trip with Advantage Grand Canyon (AGC) who helped connect me with the Arizona River Runner (ARR). I guess you could call AGC the Cupid of the Grand Canyon because our river guides at Arizona River Runners and the group I ended up with was a perfect match for my boyfriend and I. Prior to the trip ARR sent lots of informative emails as far as packing lists and what to expect. They totally prepared us for our trip. They also have a group page that you can post introductions on, to see who you will be traveling with. You basically have to follow the packing list and show up. They did all the rest! My boyfriend and I were amongst a total of 24 travelers on this trip. Our group consisted of age groups between 30 to late 50's, we even had a sweet, adventurous 86 year old couple. We chose the 6 day full canyon motor trip. I think it was the best choice for us. We got to experience rapids rated up to level 10, we saw the best views of the canyon, we hiked to a 180 foot tall waterfall, swam and saw the beauty of the turquoise colored Little Colorado River, and hiked along Havasu Creek. Our river guides provided us with coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner! As a part of the group we helped carry our bags on and off the raft and set up our own cots and camp area. It was a pleasure to be camping out there and not have to work as hard as a our river guides did. The one thing that I really enjoyed was seeing how passionate our river guides were about the canyon, the river, rafting, the environment, and the stories and history of the canyon. The excitement and passion in their voices as they told the canyons history and geology showed us their love for the place and their job. Our river guides were Rachel, Amanda, Katie and Noah. They did an excellent job with making this trip worthwhile. I can't think of anything negative to say about ARR. My entire trip experience was phenomenal! If I was rich I would pay for all my friends and do this trip again. TIP #1: Follow their suggested packing list!! Even if you don't think you'll need them, it's highly recommended that you follow their list. TIP #2: Bring 2-3x more then the alcohol you normally drink.... Trust me. The river makes it flow thru you like water. TIP #3: Sunscreen and lots of lotion (Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream works best). TIP #4: Bring cash to tip your awesome river guides at the end of the trip. Trust me, they've earned it! I'm at home in Hawaii writing this review. My sunburn has healed, my dry skin subsided and my weight is falling back off. Regardless of scenery, hikes, killer bright stars, food that is epic, it is the guides and crew that make this such a special week. We chose a 7 day motor trip, saw the majority of the canyon and all of the key rapids, but we learned so much about the geology, the native people and the history of the canyon that we never knew... And how close it came to being completely turned into a pond. Totally accessible to all teens up through our group having a couple mid seventy year old folks. You get to choose your adventures on side hikes, or hang out on the beach in the shade. And if you are fortunate enough to get Dave and Timmy as your guides, all the more special. Make the time. Go. First wk of June had a FABULOUS one wk river trip with this company. Guides Dave, Donnie, Ethan, Dane and Dean were AMAZING, they COMPLETE what is already an amazing adventure (including hat of the day and some interesting "evening attire." We had perfect weather. No problems whatsoever on the trip. Loved all the stops, side canyon hikes, swimming in the Little CO, hiking in Havasupi Creek. Can't recommend this trip enough. It's one of a kind. They were all so incredibly knowledgeable about the history and geology of the canyon. The kindness and encouragement they gave to those who needed it. My wife and I, along with a group of 8 other friends went on the 6 day motor powered trip in August 2017. This trip was on many of our bucket lists and it surpassed our expectations. Key Highlights - Stunning scenery. Fast exciting rapids, hidden daily waterfalls & swimming holes, desert wildlife, and of course the magnificence of the canyons - The staff. We had 3 incredible staff members (John, Brian, and Rachel) on the team who worked day and night to make the trip as comfortable as possible. They truly cared about our well being at all times and were also super knowledgeable and kept us laughing all day. - Food. Wow, I have been on a ton of outdoor trips and this was the most delicious. Lunch was generally deli type sandwiches which did the trick. Breakfast and dinner were more extravagant with a daily changing menu. On the last night, we even had steak! The boats were also equipped with tons of snacks during the day. I am pretty sure I gained a few pounds over the course of the week. - Overall Comfort. While I have been on many outdoor trips, I like being comfortable. They provided us with above ground cots, a pillow, a sleeping bag, and tent. I thought they were quite comfortable considering I was expecting to be sleeping on the ground on a sleeping pad. The bathroom was also much nicer than what I had expected and was replaced every night. Areas for Improvement - This is definitely an adventure trip and perhaps the company can do more to alert potential participants that while this is a 5star experience when it comes to adventure travel, its not like a vacation at the four seasons. People who do this trip should be comfortable with the challenges that come with an outdoor trip. Otherwise there is a risk of one unprepared person ruining the experience for the rest of the people. We didn't have this on our trip but I can imagine this being the case based on some of the previous negative reviews. Overall We had the time of our life and hope to be back soon! This review is a little late. 31 years late. In June 1987, my wife and I along with our 10 year old son took the 7 day, 6 night raft trip. It was on my bucket list forever an we finally made it come true. Reading all the reviews on the right brought back memories galore! We agree with everything they said! My wife, discussing this trip asked if she could be helicoptered out each night and stay at a Holiday Inn, and be brought back each morning. She finally agreed to the sleeping out part and we made the reservations We flew into Phoenix, rented a car and drove up to the South Rim of the cannon and stayed there 2 nights. Drove over to Marble Canyon Lodge to spend the night before out trip the next morning. We have to agree with the other reviews that it is a trip of a lifetime! The guides we had were fantastic! The sights amazing and the side hikes were inspiring! Our 10 year old was the only juvenile on the trip. The guides took him under their wings and made him feel special. He was the "official" kitchen helper and loved it. He wanted to ride the side tubes through the rapids. The guides said "yea of nay" depending on the rapid strength, someone there ready to grab him if needed, (there weren't) My wife became so relaxed, that when leaving the river at Whitmore Wash while walking to the Helicopter to take us to the Ranch on the rim, a Pink Rattlesnake was crossing out trail, and she was fascinated by it's being there. The guide, captured it in a burlap bag and relocated it. The day after we returned home, our son was just sitting in a chair and started bawling, and said he would never have that much fun again! read more

We have traveled internationally, we have camped & backpacked from Yosemite to Kauai, Hawaii, we have vacationed in Lake Havasu, Az & gone up & down the river countless of times, we have rafted the American River for a day. Of all the vacations, this has to be the BEST adventure vacation ever!! We enjoyed the 7 day river rafting trip on the Grand Canyon immensely. How do I begin to express to you how much fun, adventure& nature you will enjoy? Let me begin with our Guides: Dave, Thea (pronounced T-short e-ahhh), Amanda and Rachel. Rachel was so great! She took care of our needs, we never felt neglected or as if we were on our own. Dave is simply awesome. His laid back, fun and mellow persona instills a sense of cool confidence in him. You feel secure he can handle just about anything. His right hand gal, Thea keeps things running efficiently and is hilarious to watch her interact with Dave, they have a great relationship. Amanda is simply wonderful and knowledgeable. Being a Geologist, she is right at home surrounded by all the rock formations. We learned so much! As all the guides go, they know history and stories of the Grand Canyon and are happy to share as we cruise along the river. I learned so much about the Powell expedition. Very cool. Weather- The first thing I asked Dave as soon as I got off the plane was, "Am I really going to need my rain suit?" He said yes. Was he right. I was used to our vacations in Lake Havasu where the weather during our vacations there reach into the hundreds and even in a monsoon, we'd be comfortable in our swim suits. This was not the case in the Grand Canyon where I learned the temperature can rise and fall quickly. Although we did plan our trip during Monsoon season, we were not disappointed with the rain we encountered. One day, the weather was warm and dry, clouds started cover us and then the rain came. Soon you could see these threads of white appear as if unspooling down the sides of the canyon walls. Then these thin lines became large rushes of water cascading over the walls. They were simply gorgeous! We did not mind standing on the raft in the middle of the Grand Canyon River decked out in our rain suits and admiring the awesomeness of the moment. Up to that point, we could only imagine what these immense canyon walls would look like when water gushed over them. Now we knew and we loved it. The cool weather also allowed us to take a hike which Dave had not done in a couple of years due to the hot weather during other trips. There are some hikes that simply cannot be done if the weather is too hot or too rainy. It seems like everything is "Weather Dependent". Hikes- From Indian Ruins to swimming pools to hidden waterfalls to rapids. This trip is awesome, full of exploration &/or relaxation. There were a couple of hikes I just knew I didn't want to participate in. Instead a group of us hung out at the base of a cool waterfall or enjoyed each others company at camp. We lounged with our feet in the cool water as we all told stories and came to know each other better. Mail box- With every trip I take, I always mail myself a postcard with a bit of memories written on it. I love getting it in the mail and reading what we had done up to that point. I highly encourage that you have a postcard ready with stamp to send out. During the 2nd or 3rd day you might make a stop where you can mail it to yourself. The mail is actually carried by donkey up to civilization to put in the post office. I totally missed out on this because I had no idea. On the last day, I was able to send out a postcard from the ranch. Meals- Yes this is camping but the meals are divine!! These young people know how to cook! We had salmon, rice pilaf and steamed broccoli on day 1 for dinner. Cheesecake for dessert. Everyday they cook breakfast & dinner. From Stir-fry to Lasagna. Lunch is usually a spread where we can make some delicious sandwiches. While floating down the river, they have snacks for us. These include granola bars, fruit, candy. Always, water is available. I felt so spoiled, we lacked nothing. Work- We had a wonderful group & we all clicked from the get-go. We all worked very well together in helping to unload & load up the boat. We helped to set up the camp & to clean up. Although this is a vacation, there is some work involved. But it's rewarding because you all are working together. This was a great experience for our 15 yr old only-child son to see adults who don't know one another come together & for the good of the community be cooperative, respectful and helpful. Truly a lesson he will remember for a long time. We had a wonderful time playing games together. He really enjoyed spending time with the men in the group and playing card tricks. Probably the most professional and respected Colorado River rafting company there is. NPS/ the National Park Service will not recommend one company over another. But I booked their 2 week, HOT HOT 120F in the shade,!!!!!, mid-Summer, 5 passenger raft trip with one pro oarsperson and up to 4 guests per raft for lots of Thrills of a smaller boat yet lots of room. Once just below the dam at the Lee's Ferry put-in ,water at 36F, I learned all the best groups like orchestras and professional orgs go with ARR. Not that there were not minor problems like the oarsmen warming us they would drink all our "unlabeled" 6 packs and cases of beer, which they did. And no warning from NPS or ARR about non-native, prevalent poison oak and the need to carry your own personal bottle of Tecnu soap to wash in the river nightly with. I got very painful itchy rash on hands and legs and all NPS had to do was inform and warn the public. One guy memorized hours of Grand Canyon poetry. The 2 women pro oars were a delight and very safety conscious. One guy knew all the geology. Another oarsman knew all the animals and human history. And the food was very good for camping !! All guests were required to help set up and take down the toilet and kitchen for 13 days. The tall skinny leader was the best, saving us all from dying in a side canyon flash flood by noticing a very distant rain storm. We aborted the super famous hike on the left, moved our flotilla of several rafts a bit down river and to the right bank, and watched car size boulders carried by the brief flash flood down another side canyon. The power and scope of this National Park now "protected" river. Wow. Pink rattlesnakes right in camp and little dark instead of white, cooler, tiny dome tents to sleep in. It was an amazing long long adventure and I am glad I stoically endured and survived it and enjoyed it to a degree. I would not recommend scalding hot Summers , but rather Spring and Autumn voyage Adventures. The other guests were ,mostly ,very simpatico. read more

My wife and I went on a 3-day trip in mid-may 2017. Had a wonderful experience from the time we met Steve at Desert Rose Hotel in Vegas to when we arrived at Bar10 Ranch greeted by Eliza and her team. Wonderful meals and entertainment, slept in Wagon :-) the first night at the ranch. Next day, we too a ride with helicopter to meet Jake, Holy and the team by the river. Wonderful service by Jake, Holy and the team, constant care and attention on the water and when we stopped for lunches and dinner. They really cared and made sure we had a great time. So great to be on the river with such great scanner and crew :-) This was a 3-day test, first-experience ....we'll be back!!! read more

Could not imagine a better run trip down the Grand Canyon than with Arizona River Runners. I was on one of the last runs of the season and even with a hard worked Summer, their equipment was in good shape, our ARR-supplied dry bags, cots, tents, sleeping bags, sheet and pillow were in excellent shape, comfy and clean. Our meals were plentiful and excellent. Be aware, the trip will challenge you but worth every single moment. Our two rafts had 28 people, aged 54 to early 70's on a 6-day/7-night adventure. Thank you for life changing experiences; checking-out of the things that don't really matter and checking-in to LIFE. Thank you for the 200+ miles of rafting on the beautiful CO river and some of the biggest white water around, for the endless miles of trails hiked to explore the side canyons, for convincing me that sleeping in a tent wasn't necessary, that rattlesnakes and scorpions aren't reasons to evacuate camp, for letting me pee outside, for a chance to ride the side tubes through the rapids. This trip white water rafting the Grand Canyon was on my bucket list and some people book it a year in advance as only 20,000 people get to go a year. I booked a three day trip and though I was in for a treat. I note we have two 12 year olds so in deference to their WiFi needs we only booked the 3 day trip. (I am glad I did!) I read lot of five start reviews on Yelp and on the Arizona River Runners web site and I thought I was prepared for what I was in for. I must preface this review to tell you on our drive to Las Vegas to be pick up for the rafting our windshield got broken by a flying rock so things did not start off well. Also my idea of roughing it is staying at a Holiday Inn. We were told to stay at the Desert Rose resort which is where we were going to be picked up. They did not have rooms available and when we eventually went there from the Palazzo where we stayed, I was glad they didn't. It is a "family" resort and is small and off the main drag of anything. Not very impressive by Las Vegas standards and certainly not close to a lot of places to eat or walk to. We were to be at the Desert Rose by 10 a.m. the day of our trip to be picked up and taken to the airport to fly to the Bar 10 ranch for an overnight stay before rafting. We got there a little early because we were coming from the strip. It was 9:40 and we waited with others to be taken to the airport. 10 o'clock came and we waited, about 10:10 an older gentlemen greeted us and started checking off names. It appeared people were missing and we continued to wait. At around 10:25, some people came in and were checking into the hotel and they were on our trip. We finally got underway around 10:30. We got the bus moving and headed to the airport, unfortunately not the airport we were flying out of. They took us to McCarran airport to pick up others for our trip who were flying in. We sat at the airport for about another 40 minutes waiting for people to get off a plane that was coming in. I guess I am just not patient with hanging out on a bus but it started things off wrong. We then drove to Boulder airport another 30 minutes and around noon got to the airport. We were then separated into groups, luggage weighed and people and carry on weighed. Our group cooled our heals for another 30 minutes for a plane although some groups left during that time. We finally got to the Bar 10 Ranch about 1:00. I note the plane swooped in across the cliffs and the landing was a little disconcerting. Bar 10 Ranch had some very nice young people working there and they were very accommodating. We rode horses - short ride about 1/2 mile and you could pay extra to ride ATV's (this was along a dirt trail following the leader and having red dust blown into your face - I would not recommend it as there was not a lot to see - although they said we were going to the rim of the Grand Canyon - not so much!). They also did skeet shooting with a shot gun and everyone got 5 shots. The young people working there do a show after dinner. They provide lunch, dinner and breakfast none of which were good food. The thing about the Bar 10 was there were really no air conditioned accommodations. We were assigned to a Conestoga Wagon to sleep in, my husband and I in a large bed at the front of the wagon and my kids on bunk beds. It might have been nice but it was a hot day and the wagon was extremely hot and even with the flaps open it was too hot to sleep. Some people got cots on the roof or the dormitory and one young man slept on the grass until the sprinklers came on at 5 a.m. and soaked him down. It was also pitch black after about 10:00 and if you went to the bath room you needed a flash light to get there. The next day we were to leave at 7:30 a.m. so we got up at dawn got packed and ate breakfast. Hurry up and wait again. Two helicopters came in to take us to the canyon floor and the rafts. Unfortunately one of the helicopters got a rock into their windshield and could not fly so we were, all 28 people, had to be taken down to the river in one helicopter (30 minute round trip - six or fewer people at a time - so instead of 1 1/2 hours it was going to take 3 hours). We were told they had to have each of our weights (you lie you die so they said) and our bags were weighed so as to account for fuel consumption of the helicopter and for balance of the helicopter. There were two teenage young men performing this task and they did not agree on how this was to be done on an I-Pad which did not instill trust and confidence in the passengers. I was at a point where I thought about saying forget it take me back to Las Vegas. We were told to leave our bags when we boarded the helicopter and they would come down on the next helicopter. We rafted through the Grand Canyon in early June 2016 with Arizona River Runners and highly recommend this trip as an experience of a lifetime. The guides were wonderful - very friendly, professionally knowledgeable and obviously in love with the canyon. They paid close attention to our safety and comfort. The 8 days and 7 nights we traveled were remarkably full, marked by moments of high adrenaline as we passed through exciting white water rapids (expect to get wet!) as well as side excursions to waterfalls, pools and short desert hikes. We spent days spotting big horn sheep and incredible rock layers. My husband and I joined a group that had started on the longer 13-day trip, after we hiked down Bright Angel trail from the South Rim - make sure to drink a lot of water and mind the last part which is incredibly hot. From the beginning, the entire group got along extremely well and it was great to see how everyone cooperated to empty the rafts each night and get the camp prepared. Check your dates carefully in light of weather and temperature, pay close attention to the detailed list that the company provides for clothing and things to bring. Best vacation ever! I have traveled and am willing to take on any adventure. This was a trip of a lifetime! The guides are so great and knowledgeable. I learned so much about the history of the area while enjoying myself immensely! It was my daughter's birthday and this crew treated her like the princess she is! They could not have added anything extra as they covered it all! I can not express the gratitude I have for all who pulled this off for us. I thought it will be really nice, but how wrong I was, I am not a snob but let me say that I wouldn't let my dogs stay at the hotel we stay at, can you believe I found a syringe in my room? I wouldn't have complained, seriously I wouldn't until the driver Michael who took us to the river said to all of us that he would like to not to search and frisk our body when we were coming back, if I was alone and not for sake of my family I wanted to tell him that I really want to see you trying, you ######## piece of ####, and we got to lunch, then again I truly wouldn't feed it to my dogs, just to give you something to compare, subway would be few century ahead of what they try to feed us, and then again my dogs would made a hell a lot of better sandwich, and now here it comes the helicopter ride, what a joke, just don't waste your money, I know people have the tendency since they have already spent the money and time, say wow and what a nice ride, but trust me, you will be a lot better off with other companies, at least spare yourself from all the mood swings that all the employees and management seemed to have. read more

My friend and I just finished the 3 day trip from June 30-July 2. The Canyon is amazing and being down in it on the river was the trip of a lifetime; however....our guides left much to be desired. Frank, Marty and Julie (and two other guys whose names I cannot remember) seemed bored and tired. When we stopped for the night, the weather was great but it began to rain around midnight. My friend tried to wake up Frank to ask about getting a tent but couldn't rouse him and no one responded from the raft where some of the guides were sleeping. We tried using a tarp but ended up getting soaked as did many of the others. When we confronted Frank about it on the bus ride home, he had excuses "I don't hear well", "Marty went around and checked on people" - we didn't see or hear him. I don't know if there really were tents or if they were just too lazy to unload them, but it was really unfortunate to have this happen, especially at $1283.00 per ticket. read more
