Armstrong's staff never seems to know anything about what they sell or the area in which they sell it (climate, zone, soil). I bought an "improved meyer lemon" tree and asked the old, not-helpful fellow what "improved" meant. He gabbled on and on about how it's you know, "improved" "better than before". It's ok to say, "I don't know." Totally A-okay. Given that citrus is the hallowed, single most historical species of this area, I feel like the guy should know SOMETHING given that they had fewer than 20 varieties of citrus available (owing to huanglongbing, presumably). Google it, dude. Figure it out. He might as well have been the clerk at the Dollar Store, MacDonalds or the auto parts store--he seemed to have as much subject area expertise as any of those. Irritating to have to drop $50 on a tree that the guy knows nothing about. Get some better employees Armstrong. This has happened 5 times now. read more

One of the nicest garden centers and nurseries in the area. The staff is knowledgeable and polite. We buy everything for my mom's small vegetable garden here every spring and fall. We also get her annuals here. The plants are healthy, the selection is good (some tomato varieties tend to sell out quickly), and the organic planting mixes and organic fertilizers are adequate. The succulent section is limited but perhaps as the demand for drought-resistant landscaping increases it will expand. read more

Armstrong Garden Center is Very ready for going the extra safety distance during Covid-19. A smiling concierge meets everyone at the gate, keeps things wiped well, and asks if you have any questions. The sales professionals at the counter are Very knowledgeable about plants, growing needs, planting locations, and supplements. They offer to order whatever we need, and call when it arrives at the center. They accompany us to the locations where certain plants can be found. Check-out is a breeze. Their smiles are at the ready. The quality of the plants is superior. I especially enjoy their free classes/demonstrations with question-and-answer sessions afterwards. They offer to bring the purchase to the vehicle - smiling all the while. It's a beautiful experience all around. read more

I'm what you would call a weekend gardening enthusiast. As such, I have limited knowledge about plant care and how to treat problems with insects. This is one of the few retailers where they have actual staff who know how to treat problems, so they have become my go to place for information. The facility itself is a gardener's Field of Dreams. Sadly, the prices of plants and decorations make it much easier to go to other retailers. read more

I have received all of my current strength from this garden. I was nothing before I discovered this oasis of magnitution. Come between the hours and you will gain automatic +XP when you drink from every fountain twice. Do not listen to the employees if they stop you. Yes, they are guardians, but you are a mage. Who will try to leech strength from you? Just keep leveling up. I once found a damaged street child in the storage. What a disappointment! I checked the hours, which happen to be holiday hours. They are having a sale which I why I was going. Their holiday hours changed unannounced so when I arrived at 5:09 they were already closed and I missed the sale. They website and holiday hours are supposed to go until 7pm. I went in the next day and not one employee would honor the sale price for me. Bad customer service, on the part of the company to change house but not post online and bad for the employees to not honor the sale price. They have usually been great on customer service and I'm a regular. I just feel like it's the least they could do. I'm sure people weren't coming in droves a day later and demanding the sale price so what harm would it have done to do a nice thing for a customer. Oh and please change the hours online. Living in the area for about 5 years and I've been to this Armstrong location twice now. First time I was ignored by staff, and felt like the cashier had an attitude when I asked a simple question of checking the price for an item. Today I came in and again was ignored by all the staff. Several walked right past me and didn't acknowledge nor ask if I needed help. Thought perhaps it could be due to my skin tone, but after reading other reviews, that might not be the only reason for their lackluster customer service skills. Knew better than to come to this store after the first experience, but thought maybe their compassion and empathy might have increased since last time. By golly, I was wrong. Wont ever waste my time to come to this location. Would rather support small business, and another location with the same name but has OUTSTANDING customer service skills. Armstrong has a great variety of exotics, drought tolerants, tropicals, edibles (fruit/veggie/herbs), indoor and outdoor plants, decorations, growing supplies, all in a beautifully presented nursery. There are always employees willing to help and if they don't have the answers, they will look it up. The plants are grouped according to growing habits and needs. They have services that will come out to your garden and help you redesign your landscape. If I could, I would have given them 4.5 stars because it is really a great place but prices run quite a bit higher than large hardware store prices. The quality it there, though. Order a fountain form my home and had them deliver it. Payed far more than any other place but it was the one I wanted. It arrived damaged. The chipped piece was a part of the decorative portion of the design so it was very noticeable. I called to let them know and they offered me paint to cover up the chipped off piece of the fountain. I recently ordered a tree they didn't have on the lot yet. I was told they should be coming soon but if I special ordered the tree it would be there in a week. I decided to special order it so that I can get as much of the growing season in before the hear comes. It's been four weeks and no tree, no phone call, nothing. I have been calling every week and no one there seems to know what is going on. I finally asked for the ordering manager. He said he will order it this week. This week? Where has my Oder been these past 4 weeks? No apology. no explanation, and had an attitude as though he was doing me a favor. I'll drive to a further Armstrong. I'm done with this one. read more

If you're ever thinking of entering a contest run by Armstrong Garden Center, it doesn't help to be honest or follow the rules. The two "winners" of their rose garden contest both turned in essays that were well over the word limit. However, they let the one with 193 words win and after protest they took down the rules. They had to keep that word limit rule (since I had it in an email) and gave another prize to the second place person who had also turned in an essay over the word limit, but the contest administrators gave her a second chance. They also let through about five others with essays over the word limit. The original "winner' broke three rules, but who is counting when there are only like five rules? Armstrong refuses to send me the rules. Honesty and integrity aren't exactly the motto of this company. read more

As I was driving to the doughnut shop down the street, I spotted this place and decided to stop by and check it out. I wouldn't say I'm a garden or plant expert by any means, but if I wanted to take gardening up as a hobby, this is the place I would go. They have tons of plants and the staff was very helpful with the questions I had. The outdoor/indoor layout of the garden was also very peaceful and felt like home in a way. Greta staff, well prepared to answer questions, great selection and although it could be 15-20% more than Home Depot, you are able to join their rewards program, and it is basically the same, on most items. This is a follow-up to a one- star review regarding unsatisfactory customer service I experienced a week ago. This new post reflects the quick actions taken by Armstrong Gardrn to address my concern and rectify it. In addition to a written response to my Yelp review, today I got a call from Mayra, assistant manager, and she was very sweet and apologetic. I am impressed at the quick acknowledgement of their misstep and the fact that they're taking actions to correct it. I do want to point out that Mayra had helped me when i initially purchased my fountain and she was extremely helpful and pleasant. It was the subsequent interactions with phone customer service that were disappointing. But we're all human and make mistakes, so I'm just glad that management is taking action to ensure a shortcoming in their phone customer service is rectified. It's a sign of good management. I'm a big fan of Armstrongs as for if they don't currently have in stock the plant, cactus, tree, bush or flowers I want, they seem always to be able to quickly source it for me. I've purchased many large trees from Armstrongs over the years and they are all still happily flourishing...meaning that Armstrongs has never, as of yet, sold me a sickly specimen. Keith at the Armstrongs in Glendora has been patient with me and alway ready and courteous to locate unusual plant requests for me. They are way overpriced and the help is unfriendly and cold. Feels like the DMV. The problem with them is that they've become too corporate. I went in to this location recently after a less than stellar experience at another nursery and needed some fertilizer for my house plants as well as add to my house plant collection and was not sure about where to place my new plant friends. There was a very helpful woman named Linda who helped me from start to finish guiding me on plant placement and products that would be helpful for my indoor garden to grow. Love these stores BUT they can never get special orders correctly fulfilled. This is my third time they have failed me in delivering my order. This time they gave my order for a flat of flowers to another customer, in error. They allegedly reordered it but while it was to be delivered Tuesday, it's now Saturday evening and not a word about the order. I have just about given up with Armstrong on special orders, And certainly would not encourage anyone else to use them for this purpose. I love shopping here for flowers especially. They also have a good selection of vegetables, herbs, succulents and roses, and everything is healthy. Also they've got a wide selection of pots, garden decor and soil, supplements, etc. If you're looking for something specific for larger landscaping, you might not find what you want, but you'll have fun looking! The staff are friendly and helpful. Once I left behind a garden ornament I had paid for, but when I realized it I couldn't find the receipt and wasn't sure I had actually purchased it so I let it go. A month later, an employee called me - they still had it in the drawer with my receipt wrapped around it, ready for me to pick up. They could have added it back to stock and kept my money. I have a weed growing in my yard Nut Weed and want to dig up those areas and clean those out of the soil I called three places before Armstrong and they all sounded like they were having a terrible Tuesday morning... until I called Armstrong, Patty answered the phone and was pleasant as can be! Gardening department. First part is about home depot. 2 young men, 1 cashier 1 on floor hanging onto a cart just standing there. Asked cashier if they carry thyme ground cover, told me to ask the other guy. I walk up and ask other kid, he never moves from the cart he is hanging on and says if we do it will be by ground cover. Wow!, ok. I thought im going to Armstrong. I get to Armstrong look around, ask cashier, Myra, same question. She says, let me show you what we have. She tells me the pros and cons to the Thyme ground cover, asks me what plants are currently in the area and makes her recommendations. The age category between Myra and the kid at home depot were about the same. 100% better customer service at Armstrong gardening. They just won my business, even if they can be a bit more pricy. And then Myra also helped us to our car and then i watched her help another couple who were already loading their car. Home depot should hire people like her read more

I had bought a $13 Latana that had died in the pot. I tried to return it for store credit. The female manager told me unless I had proof that I had pruchased it she couldn't return it. That was when they were across the street there in Glendora and I shopped there maybe 2 decades ago. I moved away;visited recently and the friendly vibe was gone, barely anyone was there on Sat a.m., and the prices exorbitant. Too bad. Was at Armstrong looking for some plants to help brighten up my backyard. While looking around a gentleman named Brendan asked if I needed any help or if I was looking for anything specific, I told him no just wanted some colorful plants to brighten things up. He showed me some pansy's a gardenia and a Maple coral bark tree. Even water fountains and decor he was very knowledgeable and happy to help me! Brendan really helped make my experience at Armstrong a great one! I have planted flowers he showed me and I'm so pleased with them! We have been here a few times now and the staff is very friemdly and knowledg heable especially a young man named Keith. He has helped us choose the right trees for our needs and has been very patient with all of oyr questions and concerns. I'd semi-frequently shop at this Armstrong location out of convenience because it's so close to my house. The customer service was always so-so. Bought a large Hope Philodendron at this location yesterday. Once I got home, realized it was way too large for my pot and space in my dining room. I read the return policy on my receipt, which clearly stated I could make a return with the receipt. (I've never returned a plant before.) Brought it back today with the intention of returning it and picking out a different plant and some soil. When I walked up to the register the woman working there frowned and asked if I left it outside. (Umm... no. I didn't... besides the car ride to the store which is .5 miles away from my house.) She called a manager to assist and asked me to move to a different register. Manager comes up and also inspects it and says it looks like I left it in a hot car. At this point I was pretty annoyed. It would be one thing if I actually DID leave the plant in a hot car, but I did not... plus the plant really didn't look bad to me? I had just purchased it the previous day and the thing looked the same to me as when I purchased it. I was tempted to whip out my phone to show them photos I took of the damn plant inside my AIR CONDITIONED house. Anyway, manager starts the return but instead charged me a second time. I see a refund for $65ish so she didn't even bother telling me she charged me twice. Between the unfriendliness and accusations, I will not return. (Something to mention- I work retail and deal with annoying/lying/chronic returners frequently.... it's a pet peeve when people do this, which is why these accusations strongly bothered me.) read more

Man this place is expensive! Maybe I'm used to independent nurseries in Berkeley, but this place's prices didn't seem very good. Anyway, they have a fairly general selection of plants, amendments and tools for their relatively small size, but nothing too rare, plus almost every plant there comes from Monrovia nursery (not a negative, just don't expect anything different if you haven't found what you wanted from Monrovia's stock). I was sort of interested in a tree there, but was turned off from the price: they were asking $60 for a common 3-year old Japanese maple cultivar. I could have bought that same tree in Berkeley for $30. read more
