Just from its construction billboards announcing this structure, we were excited to see what agencies the JTMC would house or collaborate with. Well, when this center opened in January 2020, and we went to check it out as we noticed its new tenants moving in. This center's six tenants are City and State Agencies as follows. City & County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services (DTS) Honolulu Police Department (HPD) Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) Emergency Services Department (ESD) Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) State of Hawaii Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) The JTMC brings together both state and city agencies to focus on improving traffic management and public safety coordination on O'ahu. Led by the City's Department of Transportation Services (DTS) and Hawai'i State Department of Transportation (HDOT), this center's combination of people and automated systems can proactively manage traffic and change the traffic flow in response to or in anticipation of traffic incidents, coordinate traffic information among responders and to the public. Although we didn't roam about the interior of the building for security reasons, we admired the architectural design of this building. We could see themes of Hawaiian tradition and Pacific voyaging and navigation themes. The overall building honors the revival and perpetuation of Hawaiian and Polynesian voyaging. The JTMC's logo is Hōkū Pa'a which translates to "North Star" can be seen on the statue fronting its South Street entrance. The Hōkū Pa'a is in the shape of a shield with 3 distinct design elements: the 7-pointed star, the Pueo (Hawaiian short-eared owl) and, trails or roadways. I'm glad to see these six City and State Agencies put under one roof as it means that O'ahu's public daily commutes will be supported with safety and efficiency.

They have walk-in appointments every weekday morning from 7-8 and usually it's empty. (You can always call 808-842-2062 to confirm.) The office is located on the second floor and you can park in the little Exchange lot right by the gate. Just follow the signs and write your information on the log list at the podium. (Make sure you have all your documents with you before you visit!) Everyone there is very friendly and professional. All the equipment is in the ID room and you won't even need to stand for a picture. Even on a slow computer day, you'll have a new ID in just a few minutes. (Just don't share the secret too much, since it's nice not having to wait!)

Appointments start at 0800 but the place opens at 0700. So if you're smart and you didn't make an appointment on RAPIDS; be there when the door opens or else as a walk in you'll be seen between appointments. And if you do have an appointment make sure to come about an hour early. Why? Keep reading. They only have one processing machine that makes the cards so if that breaks down well you can enjoy the nice lounge they have before driveway home mad. It's expected they only have one machine since the base is relatively small, compared to JBPPH's dozen machines. Getting there from Nimitz, on sand island road is a long drive. Tip: stay on the right side lane early in the morning. The Matson big rigs make left turn into their warehouses. I like this place but only four stars because parking sucks. If you paid attention, I wrote the base is small. The only open parking lot is shared with the mini mart and their stalls are marks with a 20 min time limit. Too bad you can't make an appointment for a parking stall. Hint hint. M

But the other coupons are good because they are for places that I actually like to go. Often these kinds of books are loaded with coupons for places that frankly have to beg for business and although that is the case to a degree with the VIP Books it is not to the degree that the Entertainment Book does. Don't just complain. Come up with PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS that are good for ALL CONCERNED. Get involved with 2-hour monthly meetings to let the Mayor, the City Council, the legislature and even the Governor know wassup in your neighborhood that NEEDS IMPROVEMENT by first becoming AWARE of a problem that needs a resolution sooner or later. Get involved to MAKE IT SOONER. This is what I got. I WILL plan, God willing, to attend the McCully/Moiliili Neighborhood Board meeting on this Thursday, 12/6/18, from 6:30-8:30pm at St. Mary's Episcopal Church on S. King St. I will encourage my brother to also attend. I gained a lot listening to Chris, Janelle, Dylan and Jackson and they are to be COMMENDED with their colleagues and their Executive Director, Shawn (sp?) Hamamoto, for a job WELL DONE. They educated and inspired and MOTIVATED me to take the FIRST STEP to "return to the community" by serving the community.
