My next idea was Mulot's Patisserie, but their doors weren't any more inviting, as white paper covered all their windows. I was out of ideas until I spied the Hyde Park Bakery in the distance. I figured they were new kids on the block, as I'd never come across them when I was living round the corner. A quick squiz at their Facebook shows in fact they are pretty new, and opened up in March of this year. But back to the goods. I was immediately drawn to their lattice shortbread pies, but I had a cravings for something savoury. It was a real dilema because everything in the cabinets looked delicious. I settled on a pumpkin & feta parcel and grabbed a shortbread pie to take home for later. I've spent years searching for a pumpkin & feta parcel to rival one that Michel's Patisserie in DJs Food Court (they don't do them anymore), sadly these weren't the ones, but they were still delicious. I can't wait to get back to try some more of their goodies. Everyone was helpful and friendly, and one of the bakers even came out to chat to a lady about their boiled chocolate cake, when they were made, and how long they'll last. It was then that we noticed the cake stand offering sizeable tastings of this particular cake. If you're in the area check this bakery out, I'm almost glad everywhere else was closed.

Over the…read moreweek I was in town for business, I found myself back at Hyde Park as much as possible, trying as much as possible. The chunky beef bacon and cheese is a favorite for sure. The sandwiches and sweets are absolutely incredible, prices are great especially considering quality and great service! Cappuccinos, even on a 37* day, were delicious! Each and every time I have consumed breakfast food because I could! This place makes muesli delicious- even though some would argue that this is impossible however I consumed the most amazing muesli ever here. Poached eggs with beetroot and ricotta- they have that too and it sure is yummy! A few more flavours of tea wouldn't go astray however considering their already broad and varied menu, I think I'll let them off this once. As we have established, the food is brilliant but so is the location- ridiculously hip and a trendy place to be seen, some would argue that this place errs a little on the pretentious side of things and yes it does walk a fine line but it does so very well! The staff leave a little to be desired- as others have mentioned that could all probably do with a happy pill or two but hey, if they bring me my food and it's that tasty, I'm going to put up with their up-side-down smile for now! I'll be back again though- that's for sure!

Review for upstairs fringe venue:…read more A low rumble....As if the earth was stirring for something memorable. A slight tension cuts the air. The familiar echoes of a jovial Friday night. We are in Adelaide at the Store on Melbourne Street to see a funny man! His name is Ben Darsow (known in the East as 'he who sells out awesome fringe shows'!). Who would've known we'd be in for an hour of hilarious quips and great stories?! Such a great show. The audio in the venue was well balanced, the decor is funky and it's well within walking distance of heaps of great eateries and watering holes. I feel a little sad that i only saw one show here, I've been told that during the fringe season they've been running between 2 and 4 shows most nights, quite successfully with various comedians in tow. The Store will be running shows (presumably comedy) again in 2016 and I for one will definitely be back! Now that I've seen the upstairs, I'm also looking forward to round 2, trying the downstairs food and service!

I think this is the best place I've eaten in ages! Modinetti does breakfast and lunch - good for the quick stop or a lazier magazine reading morning. The atmosphere inside is pleasant and laid-back and I was pleasantly surprised to find out there was a nice shady outdoor seating area out the back. The inside area is really lovely without being too over-considered. The staff are friendly but not forced. There is a nice buzz in the place - I overheard lots of friendly gossip and chitter chatter. Now for my favourite part - the menu. It's all Casalinga Italian - 'casalinga' meaning domestic or homemade. The dishes are all fairly basic but delicious - simple combinations of flavours that you wouldn't get at many Italian restaurants. There is a range of vegan and gluten free options. Everything is incredibly cheap - $6 for a medium sized soup or a breakfast dish or a little pizza or a salad. $7 for a focaccia. This morning I had the Brodo - a clear broth with chicken parmesan meatballs. It was light and refreshing, with a light sprinkle of herbs and a crusty piece of sourdough toasted with olive oil. Cracked pepper and parmesan on top. The perfect summer lunch. I can't wait to come back here, will have to try and wake early enough for breakfast. My only criticism is that I wish it were open on Sunday mornings!

They have chosen the right place to set up shop too. They are offering a modern styled cuisine in an area that is traditionally serving German and pub styled food. So for the locals, I am sure that it is a breath of fresh air. The restaurant is earthy styled with the use of a wooden cladding, furniture and decorated tree branches. The walls are painted in blackboard paint and cool chalk art is on display. They have a really creative menu; I was fortunate enough to try the prosciutto wrapped nectarine served with a salad full of yummy fetta, radish, mint and lettuce. It was a real treat, sweet and salty, and just the way I like it! If you are after a coffee and cake, this is also a really lovely destination. They served Kitchen 2C branded coffee and a beautiful selection of cakes and cookies. Yummy gluten free options too. The first time I went to dine was just before Christmas. Just wanted to also note that they were selling the most amazing home cooked Christmas puddings. What a great festive addition. They make donuts and sweet buns also. I'm quite impartial to their Milky custard red bean bun and the milk de crunch. If you're in need of a quick lunch, they have that covered to! The earlier you buy it the nicer it is!! Oh that's right I asked a question didn't I? So they own a bakery, we've established that, are they fabulous though? Fabulous is a pretty strong word... If I've got time to sit down, the pie comes with fresh cream. The staff aren't always the friendliest bunch, but it doesn't bother me much. They're quick and professional at what they do. The cafe is always clean, although it is a little dark but it's a warm darkness, like the inside of a hug. The car park is another massive positive for this place (car parking in Mt Barker is an ongoing battle) it's big and there's plenty of turning room. I'm always able to get a park. A bakery that's like a professional dark hug, with a big car park. What's not to like?
